There was a fear during WW2 that the Japanese would bomb CA since most of the aircraft manufacturing in the US was done there. This was a project to hide one of the largest plants from possible bombardment.

One thing living in Japan does is cement the fact that ignoring the opinions of others is a perfectly valid life strategy.
I will never understand buildings with holes through the center but this was the most flattering angle I could take the photo in on my walk to Lunch today. Their website has a better picture of said hole.

The thing that bothers me about this cluster of buildings is that all of them are wildly variable for age/design methodology and they've tried to make it all fit. While the photo makes it look pretty good, in execution, the concrete formulation of the building in the back is wildly discolored and the glass building to the left is a 1970's style ball of concrete, steel, and glass.. aka lets paint over the rusty parts nobody will notice.

The giant staircase to the hole through the building is also notable for serving no real purpose. Of note immediately behind the school is a canal, so it's effectively nothing except a workout routine to access side doors in a building you'll still need to use the elevator to get around in.

The old style mansions in the background from before builders in Tokyo realized they needed more than simply functional architecture don't help.

His buildings are actually really tacky and dumb, especially if you see them up close. Also, none of the windows line up, the walls are never straight and sometimes even the floor isn't. The apartments come mostly furnished because you can't fit any other furniture in there except for specially made snowflake furniture. Upkeep is also insane and the insulation is sub-standard as well. It's loving retarded.

It has a weird pedestal thing at the bottom that doesn't actually serve any purpose or create any useful space.

Edit: Oh right I am dumb.

But yeah, the best part about the pedestal is that they didn't do anything good with the surround space.

I went for super stud.
The architect of the World Trade Center stuck a more boring version of it on a pedestal. It's cool and impressive but it's a gimmick that doesn't accomplish much. I bet they had a good concept for using the extra public space below it but people didn't want to hang out in the windy shadow of a building.

Also the first ten stories of it are empty. So they lost like twenty times as much space inside the building compares to what they gained outside.

Tile floors on every surface of the house? OK sure why not, I've got a two story tower built out of cinderblocks, just like they build in Germany, that's all I care about. That and getting black out drunk on bulk wine apparently"
