Just found out that the regional tourney closest to me did pre-registration, without mentioning it on their website or facebook page, except to notify that they were now full, k thnx. Ugh. I even sent them an email about it and other people left messages with them, and got no response. Looks like nothing but local games until nationals, and no shot at a bye for me.

The pawsting business is tough work.
There is no part of that story that isn't heartwarming.

Had an edge case come up last night. Pilot A starts the turn with a stress token and tries to make a green maneuver. They collide with another ship during the maneuver, not moving to the end of their movement template. Apart from the normal collision rules, is Pilot A still stressed? Or is it attempting the maneuver what counts, not finishing it?

they drop the stress, executing the green maneuver drops it. Step 4 of activation

If you start a maneuver and don't finish it, you still clear/get stress. It works the other way too, with a K-turn. If you're blocking where they would end their move, they still get the stress from starting the red maneuver but don't get to turn around since they didn't get to finish that maneuver

And it's always cool to get THREE Scum Boba promos!

Nice! I wasn't able to stay all six rounds of the tournament so no bonus promo cards for me, but I did win two and lose two. Jake Farrell was the MVP, the Y-wing died pretty quick in most of the games and Leebo was pretty solid all round.

Ew is this The Raleigh one? I'm just glad I was notified by nova members. The one in Pittsburgh has been silent and I don't know if I should call yet - it's in July.

If it's a large cap, the rule of thumb is that typically 5% of people won't show up when pre-registration is required. Since there is no loss to pre-reg, people do it anyway and just get a refund later.

Just confirming; K-Turn's and Segnor's Loops are only prevented from completing the facing change by ships impeding them, and at the end point, right? You can complete one if the template overlaps, and/or through an Obstacle? It looks that way reading the rulebook.

Centerville, OH I think. Cap was at 64 and sold out over a week ago (tourney is on the 30th). I'd have gladly pre-registered if I had any reason to believe that they were even doing that, but poor communication and all that.

Debris fields are great for swarms as well and generally not that great for arc dodgers. They prevent barrel rolls/boosts but generally swarms don't give a gently caress even if they are parked in the middle of them and if you have b-wings, the low chance of getting a crit is negligible.

I had my y- wing parked on a debris field in a regional match against a swarm and it was pretty funny just staying ther, not rolling the crit and not giving a gently caress about the obstruction penalty thanks to the autoblaster turret.

Played a demo of this game last night. First time I've done any tabletop gaming since I burned out of the 40K comp scene two years back. The game was awesome fun and I'm defiantly going to start a collection.

The club that I'll be playing at tends to be mildly competitive, and since my budget is going to be constrained for a bit are there any particular models/factions that seem really subpar that I should avoid? Also is any one particular faction heavily overplayed compared to the other two?

Avoid

TIE bomber, HWK-290

E-Wing only has one competitive ship
X-Wing expansion is sort of pointless right now

TIE Defender isn't amazing

There is a good balance in my area but Imperials see slightly more play because of the fedora and goatee types who think The Empire Was Right, Unironically

The HWK is loving brilliant don't listen to this bullshit.

Most of the rest of it is right though. Etahn (the E-wing pilot he's not talking about) is great in Z-swarm lists, but the generics are overpriced.

Hawk isn't bad, it's the cheapest way for Rebel or Scum to bring a turret and a passenger. I'd rather have one with Moldy Crow, Recon Specialist, and Blaster Turret for 30 or less points than many ships that cost that much bare.

Yeah HWK is better as a scum version. A-wing is also currently lackluster and tie advanced won't be good unless you also buy the needed upgrade from the upcoming large ship (MSRP $100).

The HWK took off with scum, but the upcoming twin-laser turret may bring Rebel HWKs into true viability- a 26 point Roark with twin laser turret is actually a pretty sweet platform.

I also went to the FFG regional. Went 4-2 with standard Soontir + 5 obsidian TIEs. I got absolutely destroyed by a RAC + soontir and lost a close match against double aggressors.

I really enjoy flying against dual aggressors with my soontir + mini swarm. I have about a 50% winrate and feel it comes down to the better pilot being able to predict maneuvers and block.

I would say the HWK is worth avoiding if you want to get competitive on a budget. Palob and Jan are great, but you have other options in Rebels and can probably do without in Scum.

Well, it's no regionals story but I did get a game in today. I decided to try out an updated version of an Imperial Kath Scarlet list I cooked up a while back.

Kath Scarlet
-Veteran Instincts
-Mangler Cannon
-Proximity Mines
-Engine Upgrade
-Tactician
-Slave 1
-Flechette Torpedoes

Whisper
-Advanced Cloaking Device
-Sensor Jammer
-Veteran Instincts
-Mara Jade

I went up against a guy with a somewhat haphazard Scum list...for example, he had Kavil and an Autoblaster Turret but was using the R4 Agromech instead of an Unhinged Astromech like you'd expect. Kavil, Palob with another Autoblaster Turret, a Binayre Pirate, and the named Headhunter pilot who steals focus from his own team.

It went down to the wire, three of his ships dead and both mine still standing, but a damaged Whisper clipped an asteroid and died and the Palob, of all people, finished off Kath with an Autoblaster volley. Autoblasters are murder against a Phantom, let me tell you.

I'm honestly pretty pleased with how the list played, but I think the takeaway lesson here is that even when you aren't doing it to ships that benefit from having stress, stacking up stress just isn't really the be-all end-all and not a thing I think you really ought to focus on. I like flying the Firespray and the Phantom was fun as hell, but I think I honestly just prefer the Scum Firespray, Kath and Kavil palling around with indirect fire shenanigans.

I want to try running Kath with Engine Upgrade plus Daredevil (Scum or Imperial though Scum get that K4 Security Droid which is aces). There were a number of times during that match I wished I could have pulled a hard-1 turn even if it meant taking a stress

What is the engine upgrade for? Are you trying to boost away from the guy you overlapped so you can shoot them? That seems like it won't work very often. You know that you can't boost into an overlap, right?

You can boost through a guy though, as long as you don't overlap at the end. It seems like small-base ships could be boosted past most of the time, using the bank options.

It's fine. You use EU when you don't want to bump. Friend used it to get to top 4 of NJ regionals with a phantom sidekick. Oicunn's ability will be used to slow roll and kill interceptors and phantoms for the most part.

Also yes. This is one of the big advantages to weapons like Heavy Laser or Mangler Cannons, you can snipe from range 3 without giving the defender any extra green dice.

Yes, only the normal basic attack gets a bonus or penalty.

Also yeah, Scum own. I only have the ships from the Most Wanted set (Firespray, Hawk, 2 Y-wings, 3 Z-95s) but I'm not sure I really need more than that. Scyk looks fun with the title and a cannon, Starviper looks okay, apparently 2x IG-2000 is good, but I feel like I'd be best-served just buying another Most Wanted set.

I definitely want a YV-666 when it's out though for shenanigans with 3x Tactician.

I haven't gotten to fly the Scyk yet but I have flown the Starviper a few times and it's honestly a pretty solid little ship, fast and maneuverable, the Segnor's loop is a useful move, and it has a solid action bar (both boost and barrel roll). Guri in a kitted-out Virago with Veteran Instincts has done right by me in a couple games and I certainly wouldn't hesitate to use it again.

I got three Phantoms partly because I wanted the Tacticians and partly because I wanted to try running a squad of them.

Is it worth running 4 bare Sigmas or are three plus upgrades (especially the cloaking-specific ones) far better?

I can't imagine running Phantoms without the Advanced Cloaking Device, but concurrent with that is that I can't imagine running Phantoms locked at Pilot Skill 5 at best would end very well. The reason, say, Whisper works so well is that ACD plus Veteran Instincts gives you a chance to decloak, shoot before many other ships can, and then recloak before the return fire starts.
