Finally got around to getting 1946 reinstalled and setup. Got some minor control issues I've gotta work out right now, and I haven't played in ages, but I should be able to join in this weekend.

Getting used to the robotic feel of 1946's flight model. Understandable that things would feel a simplified given the number of aircraft and the sim's age. The AI is shockingly good though. My first campaign mission in a Yak-1 involved an attack on our airbase by a half dozen Stukas and four 109s. Having my own wingman actually do something useful and blow away all the Stukas on their own was a nice change of pace from the usual in flight sims of your AI buddies flying off to bum gently caress Egypt while huffing av-gas. The 109s were doing combat manuevers in formation and only split up when I attacked them. Bounced the trailer from a dive and blew its wing off, the element buggered off immediately towards the Stukas and the flight leader BnZ'd my rear end to death. Utterly refused to get into a scissors where I would have murdered him with no trouble. Every time my nose came his way he'd gently caress off into space and come back down on top of me. It was like fighting a good human opponent. I don't remember the original IL-2 having AI like this, so kudos to whoever is doing the updating. Your wingmen also do these really aggressive rejoins that look pretty cool.

Any landing you can walk aw... etc...

What's the best way to make sure you kill your enemy? Get as close as possible. What's the best to do that? Don't do this:

Also the first time I've seen an AI spin. You see it at the start of this "dogfight" (more like chase and plink).

In '46 I see enemies spin all the goddamned time, or at least stall out one wing. I also see single cannon rounds reliably hurt a lot more than in BoS. Two or three 20mm shells hit your plane, it's gonna be pretty hosed most of the time in '46. Even a good burst from an MG has a good chance of crippling something. Possible exception for Japanese MGs there though. Trying to take out F2As with the two MGs in a Ki-27 is a bitch.

edit: F2As, not F4Fs

Is there a setting or mod or something that can adjust the types of missions you get in IL-2 1946 campaigns? Fw-190s are cool and I want to fly them but I also don't want 2/3rds of my missions to be ground attacks where I drop one bomb on one thing and then fly back home.

The most popular seems to be IL-2 DCG, which lets you setup dynamic campaign templates and have it generate missions based on the sort of stuff you want to do and fly. I'm still figuring out that tool so that I can start hosting IL-2 sessions (also waiting for my Marvel Heroes kick to end).

For simpler quick mission building, there's Mission Mate, which is easy to use but isn't as powerful.

Pixelbaron, EJ and the other longtime IL-2 players probably have more tools/tips.

Yeah, you'll want to mess around with Lowengrin's DCG if you want to get more out of the mission generator in 1946 it's cool and worth it.

If you want to be closer to action change the Action Radius Setting in the General Campaign Settings.

If you want to get a different mix of missions there's a whole section for Custom Missions Selection, though depending on the campaign and the situation some may not be available and you might not always get it to generate exactly what you want. For example I just tried to suggest a shipping attack in my Finland 1939 campaign and it told me that ain't gonna happen.

Beyond the General Campaign Settings and Custom Mission stuff I don't really touch the thing too much. If you have it replace the default mission generators in the Il-2 directory you can set it and forget it once you start a DCG campaign and only have to open the program up if you want to tweak something.

Any idea why this keeps happening when I use DCG?

(click for big)

Look at the bottom-left corner. The start and waypoints are "off the map," and when I spawn into the mission I can't see my cockpit and I'm surrounded by nothingness, with mountains and trees and such way off in the distance (the actual map, I assume).

DCG was working just fine last weekend but now it's doing this stuff and I have no idea why. A fresh DCG install didn't fix it, and it's happening with every nation.

That didn't fix it :(. It appears to have something to do with using DCG as a DGen replacement. When I manually make campaigns within DCG, it works fine. When I replace DGen, it gets wonky. For now I'll just leave DGen alone.

Went back to BoS for a bit today after having fun with 1946 cuz I missed the pretty engine and the flight model (and for some reason I'm godawful at landing in 46) Generated an intercept mission that consisted of a 10 minute flight out to find a single IL-2 which immediately died to AAA, flew back without seeing a single other aircraft. Mission complete :smith:

It's sad because they could have just taken Rise of Flight, added WW2 planes and a new map, and it would have been nearly perfect. Come out with $20 packs of like five planes once in a while. I would have paid for it.

But no, lifeless empty enviroment with a single bland featureless map.

RoF at least manages to be interesting. The career mode is actually interesting. Seeing how long you'll survive the air war, what new planes get assigned to your squadron and eventually running the thing? Well, hey, that's interesting. Not to mention there's always balloons/planes/ground units and such doing things. That you can shoot down/chase/avoid/intercept/strafe/bomb/rocket/whatever else.

Instead you've got 10 planes(2 of which you have to pay extra for), a choice of Intercept/Escort/Ground Attack/Ground Support/Bombing missions(each of which is incredibly predictable, to the point where you do nearly the same thing every single time for each mission type), no career mode to speak of, a really bloody boring map, and a campaign which is actually just choosing which of the 10 planes/6 missions you want to fly.

There is nothing in the world outside of your planned route. There is a max of 16(IIRC) planes on each side in existence on a 358 х 230 km map. So in a 82340 EIGHTY TWO THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED AND FORTY SQUARE KILOMETRE MAP OF WHITE AND GREY BLANDNESS, you can have approximately 0.0004 planes per square kilometre!

What I am getting at is they focus so much on the handful of planes and their performance everything else suffers. All they care about is the flight part of the sim and gently caress everything else.

Oh yeah, this is entirely true. And don't get me wrong, the planes are a loving fantastic. Except there's nothing else there. At all. Just a void an white noise.

I still refuse to buy the extra 'premium' planes, because why the hell would I spend like $20 on a single plane when I could spend $16 and get two plane packs for Rise of Flight?

Edit: note that Rise of Flight stuff is currently on sale and cheap as balls. $8 Canadian for a bunch of planes? Yes please.

I think you can publish mods if someone at 777 manually reviews and signs off on your work. So basically, yeah, no support.

I guess they were really scared of someone making porn mods for a flight sim or something?
