"my husband" is weird too but historically husbands didn't lose autonomy to wives so it's not as problematic. "my child" vs. "my father" is similar in that regard.

I actually will defend own dad's dadrock sometimes as my father has loving awesome taste in music and I only really found this out in my twenties. Also whenever I ask him what it was like to see a famous act like the Who or the Beatles he's like 'I dunno I can't remember I was just focused on the girls I was with tbh'.

Majorian posted:Hey, at least we don't arbitrarily assign genders to inanimate objects, like most other languages. relatively few languages assign gender just by semantic criteria. i think some of the dravidian languages do this? often, gender in languages has to do with the semantics and how the word sounds. the famous example being spanish with words ending in o being generally masculine and ending in a generally being feminine, or arabic words ending with ta marbuta. when this deviates, it's usually for historical reasons, such as keeping the gender from the latin root or the merging of noun classes, like with the whole dyirbal mess. interestingly, most of the feminine words in arabic end with ta marbuta, except a very few like sky or land or words of that nature; aa, is it like this in hebrew too?

playing the velvet underground super loud at 3am is also what led to me meeting a swedish drummer who knocked on our door (we thought to complain) and he told us he just wanted to join in. he took some of our drugs and then demanded a wrestling competition from whoever lived in the apartment over the spot on the stairs they both parked their bike in he showed us his incredibly vile tats including one of david bowie on his chest he woke up the next day with two broken ribs he didn't realise he had
