The Warszawa posted:anyone have any tips for learning the international phonetic alphabet? start with learning the ipa symbols english: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_American#Phonology there's even audio samples. go consonants first, then vowels. for the consonants: the columns (bilabial, dental, etc), are the place of articulation. this is where in the mouth the consonant is produced. the rows are labeled by the manner of articulation (think of it as what the articulators are doing to shape the air). in a cell, consonant on the left is voiceless, on the right is voiced. i think the vowel chart is self-explanatory. i think, if you start with english, the way the ipa is written will make sense, and the little exceptions are ones you've probably encountered, at least for the consonants. the vowels are trickier, but my thing was to learn a word to go with each symbol if the value didn't immediately come to mind (it helps here, i think, that you know spanish as well). for some of the consonants i just kinda browsed wikipedia looking for a word with that sound in a language that i knew (the symbols for palatal sounds made so much more sense when i realized that vietnamese had palatal sounds).
