I agree about the comment made earlier how most all other sim games seem to emulate realism by making everything more slippery. It was always mind boggling how you can make a turn at 30mph and sequel all 4 tires while sliding which was not even a thing my beater Saturn would do let alone a sport/supercar. Project Cars seems much closer to realism from my limited race experience and road going fun. I just can't wait till more cars make it in because I love my road cars.

And this is my current biggest gripe with DiRT Rally right now. I get that these cars are racing on loose surfaces and they're supposed to drift, but it's a bit ridiculous when 30mph around a gradual turn on a gravel road ends with my AWD, offroad prepped Lancia sliding into the trees. Especially considering I drive down gravel roads daily in a regular 2wd Silverado work truck with no weight over the rear end end and even it doesn't go spinning out the instant you so much as glance at a corner. Here's hoping they actually do something and give the cars proper grip in a later patch, since it's Early Access and all.

That being said, yeah, Project CARS feels great from what little i've got to experience. I'm looking forward to picking it up in a few weeks, so far it seems like it really nails that fine line balance of realistic but still fun.

I know the GTR games were always supposed to be some of the other Realism Sims, but while fun, they always seemed to feel like you were riding on some crap hard street tires even when you're driving a Race Spec GT car with 335 Race Slicks. That and you would almost never have oversteer no matter what you did to rotate that rear end.

The difference between many of the road cars and the race cars in PCars really puts things in perspective with regards to how much better handling-wise your average race car is*; I think the Zonda and McLaren P1 are the only two road cars (not counting track day cars) I've driven thus far that even feel remotely as composed around the track as most of the vehicles designed for racing. You can actually feel the big differences in how the car is driving in most cases (even with a controller, I imagine a wheel with good FFB settings is many times better) and it is neat.

* Excluding the GT Mk.IV, Mercedes 300, and Escort RS1600, but I'll give them a pass between possibly really poor Default setups (I have yet to make a good setup with any of them though) and the fact that they're from the late 60's/early 70's.

That's the one. The one that can take the same (non-hairpin) turns a full 20~30 MPH faster than most cars I've taken around the same tracks prior (:stare:) and can blaze up to 180~190 MPH at the end of fairly short straights before using it's Hulk brakes to grind those MPH away in half the normal braking distance I use on those tracks.

And, yeah, you definitely need to wait for the tires to heat up before you can do anything but baby it around the track since, even with a driveable setup, it will spin like a top while the rear wheels are cool. I've only finished two events of the seven so far with it, but the front tires like to stay cold (and I'm hesitant to drop the Default high front tire pressures too far to get them to warm up for fear of it inducing oversteer... the last thing the car needs more of).

On top of all that, it's pretty fragile. Came round for lap two of one of the event races to find a couple errant wheels off of AI cars strewn in the middle of the racing surface. Luckily I avoided them, but I think an AI or two ended up eating them to not good results. I also lost wheels three times between practice/qualifying sessions that involved AI rear ending me while trying to get my tires up to temperature. :v:

You're pretty much a monster. A monster that I hope has at least a SS, if not a GFY/video of said traffic jam.

On a related note of LMP1's: back when I did the Le Mans invitational, I tried the Audi R18 first. Does anyone else feel like the driver is ridiculously far back and ridiculously low in that car (literally the front wheel bodywork is impairing sight lines to the front left/right)? I understand it's somewhat meant to be that way for aerodynamics, but the RWD P30 felt so much more natural (further towards the front, able to easily see over the front wheel bodywork) and it's also an LMP1.

In other news: found a second car with the rear-facing camera in the RUF CTR3 road car. Unfortunately, it's on a standard lower-center-mount GPS area and the driver's arm is blocking it from sight except when shifting. :eng99: On a related note: the Blue Chrome livery for the RUF CTR3 is something special, especially when it was out on the track under gorgeous mid-day sun at Road America. Apparently it was so bright it blinded the AI because I ran out of fuel on my last lap of qualifying and just drifted to a stop on the track to check out the interior a bit (admittedly, sitting right in the desired line on the outside not too far before a corner); after about 10 seconds of sitting there at a dead stop, some AI (presumably) rear ended me at over 100 MPH sending me flying up into the air (all I saw was sky outside the windshield) before I came crashing back down still on the track where I had been. I was then almost immediately hit be another AI with a glancing blow to my rear. When I finally got outside the car to admire my beautiful blue car, the rear end was mostly bare bodyframe with my bumper and other bits sitting on the ground behind my car. Subsequent AI to come by seemed to avoid me without issue.

So, PC players, whats the one time & day each week we can get the most people on together? Assuming theres interest I want to organize events like I did in Forza (first order of business is an organized Clio Cup night, cuz that poo poo was crazy close the other night).

Personally tuesdays are the only days that are out for me but if we want the euro goons in on this I would think like saturday or sunday afternoons (EST) would be best.

Dude?
I finally got a decent setup going for the McLaren F1 after about an hour in free practice. I reduced the tire pressure to 1.82 and that gave them a little bit of extra cold grip, and sped up the heating process. Also , they never overheated, and they heated evenly, but that might have had something to do with the other tuning stuff I did. I reduced the ride height to the minimum, bumped the stiffness up to the maximum on the front roll bars and softened the rear roll bars one notch. All of this led to a slightly less twitchy but just as touchy McLaren F1 that I could do a few consistent laps in a row in, as long as I eased up on the throttle a little bit when going over hills.

And then I went into the actual invitational event's practice session with other cars. The AI is very aggressive with these cars. they'll intentionally ram you off the track, and these cars are so bad that the slightest bit of contact from any direction puts you into the grass. Qualified 13th because I could only get one clean lap in due to the AI and the car being so difficult to drive. Once the race started I survived the first 2 corners which were a shitshow for the AI and got myself up into 6th. Settled in there for half of a lap until an orange one completely cut a chicane and came barrelling into me at full throttle. knocked me off the track, I spun a few times, reentered in last place and stayed there for a few laps until I decided "gently caress this, I've been trying to make this loving car driveable for 3 hours now. I'm in last place 8 minutes in to a 30 minute race and just dropping further and further back" and retired to the pit box.

Then I went to the same track, drove a bunch of other cars which in my mind should be a lot harder to drive than a McLaren F1 and had a wonderful time staying on the track, being able to recover from the slightest gust of wind from a passing butterfly, and basically confirming that yes, it's the car, not me, not my controller, but the loving McLaren F1.

Seriously, gently caress the McLaren F1.

All my days are hectic.

I tend to be available from like 8 to midnight GMT, unless I'm working on a project, or don't feel like hearing anyone on the lines.

If we get a weekend series setup with points and poo poo, I'd try to make some time for that.

A full race season would be fun I think. I was going to try to originize something, but I don't want to flake out if I get busy.

My vote would be for classic F1 cars of some sort. But I'd race anything but Caterhams. (So glad I've already knocked out the events in that underpowered ice skate 7 Classic)

I was going to wait a few weeks for everyone to get acclimated to the game plus hope that they update the game more before we jump in on actual seasons and leagues and stuff.

What I had envisioned in the interim was something like:

X Car Night:

Track 1:
5 minute practice
10 minute qualifying
~15 minute race

Track 2:
5 minute practice
10 minute qualifying
~15 minute race

Track 3:
5 minute practice
10 minute qualifying
~15 minute race

I'm in Asia (+9 GMT), so as much as I'd like to be in on one of these, the only chance I'd have is if you guys agree on doing mornings in US, afternoons in Euro, and evenings here. (not bloody likely :) )

So I just discovered that entering the pits dosent technically invalidate your lap. I know this because I was doing a time trial on Silverstone and the leaderboard ghost dived into the pit lane at full speed and even though it eventually takes manual control and slows you down its still several seconds faster than going around the last few corners. I'm sure theres other tracks this is a thing on.

Trip report: As much as I would have liked to have had an actual Sazuka, the shorter versions of Sakitto are far more fun and interesting than the Sazuka West and Sazuka East versions that were in Forza. Sakitto Sprint, in particular, is a seriously nice track in slower cars such as the Clio Cup.

Weekends would probably be best, but after 7PM PST on weeknights I might be able to make something happen as well.

Also got my first Invitational for the Focus RS Sprint Race on Sonoma. Holly Crap do I hate FWD cars. The whole mechanic to make the drat thing turn and maintain speed made me have to nearly jump the Green just enough to get almost to the front to win in a 6 lap race (at 100% event length). I was getting better after about an hr of restarts and racing, but while the car has good power, turning and keeping up with speed on a few turns was kicking my rear end. The only guy I had trouble with was the leader as he would just pull away from the rest of the pack that seemed to be driven by realistic enough ramming assholes. I know the game has a bit of a rap about the AI ramming you and such, but I feel like its closer to real life player style driving then any other game. They take some bad lines around you, ram you, and overall are racing dicks. Just as I would expect. However it does feel like the collision physics are a bit off. I can go into a turn and tap the guy that took a different line, and for whatever reason, it feels like all of a sudden we slide together a bit oddly. It's quite strange.
