It's a good game that's fairly light on content as far as 60 dollar shooters go. There are all sorts of placeholders for future content in the game itself such as additional maps, possibly more maps per rotation, DLC packs, additional modes, ranked play, etc.
The core gameplay is great, it's fast paced and super polished. It's incredibly fun and rewarding, skill based, and has a surprising amount of strategic and tactical depth. There are unlockable tiers of equipment that give you stat boosts and different abilities.

That being said, you only get 2 maps per rotation (rotation switches every few hours) and there's only 1 mode for online play at the moment. I don't want people to poo poo on me for saying this or anything because I don't feel like I'm being unduly negative but it is honestly pretty sparse. I've had 2 play sessions of the game since it launched last night (I pre-loaded digitally) and they've only lasted maybe 1-2 hours a piece. There honestly just isn't that much to do. The single player isn't very long but it is enjoyable enough.

If they truly deliver on their promises of additional content and modes (for free) I think it could be a super long-lasting awesome game for years. If they don't add anything or throw some surprises in by the end of June I can't honestly see myself playing much until the next major content drop.

Given that it's being marketed as a budget game in practically every market besides the West, I think they felt pretty comfortable launching the game in its current state. Once hype for the game started dialing up super hard in the last couple of months they started realizing how insanely popular it was going to be and started throwing a ton of money at the marketing campaign.

Here's to hoping they're speedy with their content drops!

Golden Eye was the game that made the N64 rise to prosperity, Splatoon is the game that will just drag the Wii-U further down into the realms of obscurity.

Having a blast. But the random choosing of the (2) levels is hella busted. Played salt spray rig 7 times in a row before I playedthe mall level. I agree that it looks like it will be a 3 map selection in the future.

I agree except I think rollers are a bit too good just specifically on Saltspray rig, because if you just run around with a roller on the walkways that are perfectly sized for it and run away instead of fighting people all the time it's really really hard for the other team to keep up

Splatoon has become even better.

Gyro is way better but people are afraid of new things so they turn them off immediately, it seems.

Which is good for me, because it means they're easier to kill.

The most immediate content update will be the Splat Zones (king of the hill) mode, which will unlock as soon as a certain percentage of the playerbase hits level 10. Before launch, the Nintendo reps predicted it'd only take a few days.

I lost quite a bunch of matches from two or three sub weapons I had never seen before going off on my face.

Weapon Practice mode should have some sort of counter-practice also, like a very simple AI shoots at you in predictable ways so you can try to see yourself how to counter that weapon.

It locks the team colors for the last game you played when you enabled it, but it doesn't stop you from switching between the two team colors.

Somebody asked what advantage the Squiffer has over the Splatcharger earlier here, so here's ~some stuff on the Squiffer~:

First off, the squiffer uses up something like 1/3rd as much ink per shot when compared to the charger. Misses are not nearly as punishing, both because of the charge time and the ink usage.

Chargers have a point of maximum efficiency for area coverage. You might have noticed that nearly uncharged shots don't cover poo poo because the line is thin and has holes in its coverage. The point where the gun is least charged but widest is the most efficient. That's something like 1/2 or 2/3rd charged.
With this in mind you can cover something like 1/3rd more area than a splatcharger, but the splatcharger will run out of ink doing this and the squiffer will not. The end result is you can cover a ton more ground with the squiffer.

The overall difference between the squiffer and the splatcharger is that the splatcharger is a dedicated area denial tool, which means your team needs to do almost all of the floor painting. The squiffer is more of a fontline too, used to push out and kill people entering your area of paint-- just don't get surrounded by enemy paint without a reason because someone squidding up next to you is the most dangerous situation for the squiffer to be in.

I personally can't hit poo poo if it's in melee distance, which makes the shield not nearly as good as it is on the Splattershot Jr. My method currently is if someone is at point blank circling me and I have my shield up, I hammer the fire button and kill him with the pathetically weak uncharged shots. It takes more time than a single full charge, but you can do it before your shield expires.

The best part is that you're not gambling with your team comp when rolling squiffer. It's got probably the same ability to cover the ground as the .52 Gallon (which it counters really hard, speaking of which), and more than the Jet Squelcher or Blaster.

I dunno, while Saltspray's walkways are pretty roller-friendly, the stage is also pretty sniper-friendly. Those high perches can be used in tandem with a charger or the jet squelcher to shut rollers out of the high ground. It's really hard for a roller to break through that choke point at the top of the elevators if there are any kind of gunners watching over it (ditto for that big "speedbump" leading to the back zone).

I have a new neighbor. Heard he comes from far away
I just had the most amazing game. I'm level 7, and after a weird server hiccup I started getting matched with some high-level Japanese folks, including one guy who was rocking 19. I know that level isn't entirely a measure of skill, but it mattered. We went to Arowana while I wanted to test out the Aerospray in a live match, and I started getting demolished when I usually top score with the Splattershot Jr. Like, really bad times all around, the enemy team didn't let us leave the first lip out of our base. Right when it reached the last minute, I decided to just screw it and run down a side hall and sneak into their base. Since none of them were getting killed, I got free reign to just run around as quickly as I could and splatter all the floor while my teammates jumped on me. As the results screen came up, I thought there was no way we could have pulled that out.

Judd disagreed, and we won it by 2%. I was the highest scored on our team with a 1/5 KD. I usually don't take pleasure in other people's suffering, but I laughed out loud and wondered how unbelievably angry the other team must have been.
