Hello? Can you hear me? ...Perhaps if I shout? AAAAAAAAAH!

*Annika continues training*

Whew! That was a good morning workout!
Hmm, I wonder if I can get a snack in before breakfast. I'm starving right now.
Guess it's time for some veggies! Those juicy greens will re-vitalize me!

*Takes a big bite out of her food*

Mmmm, that tastes great! Alright, time to get back to work!
I'm ready for anything that comes at me!

Ah, morning! Are you doing early workouts, too?
No, I'm up because somebody was making my eardrums have a workout.
Oops! Sorry 'bout that!
Granny needs her sleep at her age, so be mindful of that in the future.
I see! But you know, starting the day early is good for you!
Especially now! I have a good feeling about the operation we're starting today.

Just a bunch of fools trying to take over the country through the chaos of war.
Those rebels were originally Gallians, right?
Why would they do this?
Some people are just upset with how the country's run, and got carried away.
I heard the mission's a tough assignment to deal with.
That's probably why it was thrown at our laps, then.
I wonder how strong are they? I can't wait to fight them!
You seem like the only one up for this task.
Of course! It's all part of my training!

Such a wild child.
You know, if you keep this up, you'll scare away potential boyfriends.
Who cares about any of that stuff?
I just want to catch up to my hero!
What, is this a schoolgirl crush?
It's nothing like that. I just want him to see how strong I've become!
I can't wait!
The only thing he'll see is what a weirdo you've become.
What do you mean?
Tell me, how did someone like you join the Nameless? You don't seem like a bad person.

I got arrested because I was too "violent" when I was defending myself. Then, next you know, I'm here.
Hmm, can't imagine what kind of bruises you inflicted to end up here.
Especially for a young girl.
I didn't think it was such a big deal. It was just a small tap, but he fainted even at that.
He was just someone who pretended to be tough.

Nah, I know I did the right thing! Besides, I like being here.
I feel like if I stay here, I'll become even stronger!
I take back what I said. Weirdo is an understatement.
Gloria, you're kinda mean.

Hmm? Where'd you get carrots from?
I found them while we were patrolling in the forest!
Try them! They're fresh and tasty!

I'll...pass on that, thanks. Old people and brittle teeth, you know. Didn't expect you to be a...veggie addict.
That's just what my hero taught me. "Every day, eat lots of vegetables to grow stronger!"
Is your hero a farmer or something?
Nope, he's a soldier.

One day, I'll be a hero like him!
What do you plan to do once you become a "hero"?
Why, protect the weak, of course!
If you're not strong, you can't protect anything or uphold justice.
A law-bringer, eh?

I felt frustrated by that, so I told myself to get strong and fend for myself!
But I have a question for you, then.
Hmm?
What about those that aren't as strong? Are they allowed to have "justice" as well?
That...
That just means they need to get stronger as well.
But what if they can't?
Then no worries! Because strong people will take care of it!
"If justice could be defeated by a dart, it's not justice."
Hmph. Your beliefs are certainly strong.

Our mission is to prevent this.
However, they've disguised themselves by wearing army uniforms. They said their goal was to destroy everything, so watch out.
Not exactly a fan of fairplay, are they?
Be aware that they may ambush us anywhere, anytime.
Great! I can't wait to see how good they are in a fight!
This isn't a duel! These guys are bad news and won't hesitate to pull off any dirty tricks.
Well, either way, we have to beat them anyway. That'll make us stronger!
Let's show 'em how we roll!
Are you still babbling on about that?

Huh?
Right now, there are people committing murders in this village.
And you're still going on about "Strength" and "Justice?"
W-Well, I'm just saying I..I get to fight strong opponents!
If I never beat tough enemies, how can I get tougher myself?

I know you're a candid child. But right now, you can't achieve this status of a "Hero" as you are.
Do you understand me?
I...No, I don't. What do you mean by that? Tell me!
This isn't something you learn from others. It's something you'll have to figure out on your own. *Leaves*
Gloria!
There's no time. Get into position, the operation will begin now.
Move out!

Mission takes place in the city map rotation.

Sometimes these maps have the bottom right open for passage, which is just a zigzag shortcut to the bottom base.

These mission gun turrets are hell, because we don't have access to flamethrowers to instant-kill them. They also take about 3 Lancer shots to kill up front, because good luck having a unit survive long enough to distract it and reveal its rear weakpoint.

The worst ones are turrets on top of enemy camps, forcing to kill them first. This specific bastard got me like 3 troops killed trying to shoot it down.

This is Deit barely getting me an S rank. I should mention that Fencers and Armor Techs are severely nerfed in terms of their defensive prowess. The Fencers especially now have an extremely tiny shield, meaning they are super glass cannons instead of lumbering anti-whatever.

Oi. Hate those drat MG turrets.

For former soldiers, they sure can still put up a fight.

Unfortunately, we weren't fast enough to stop them from setting the village ablaze.
This wasn't a rebellion, it was a massacre! Damnit!
Every single civilian is dead, down to the last infant! The Imperials are saints compared to this!
Th...this was not murder.
You...! You're still alive?! You don't deserve to live!
We...wanted a strong...country....not run by...weak....

*The soldier passes on*

Bastard! What possible conviction would lead to this?! What possible reason?!
Stop...he can't hear you anymore.
I know this! ...And yet...And yet!

*At a distance*

....Why.

Annika...do you see what happens to those that believe solely in strength?
I....
These people thought that might made you right, just like you do right now. This is no different than a three year old picking up a gun.
Being stronger and tougher isn't just being more physical. Your heart has to be in the right place as well.
Otherwise...you end up like them.
No way...I'm not like that!
Then prove it to me.
But...how?

But that's what makes you stronger, as a person. Not by beating up thugs or soldiers.
So I need a...strong heart?
Remember this: Strength is not about how much you have, but how to use what you have.
It's not about strength on the outside....ah!

True strength cannot be achieved without both body and soul! I need to mature and grow on the inside!
Oh, but you've already taken the first step.
I'll learn from this, and become a better person!

*Time has passed*

It's my payment! Though I only have carrots right now.
Payment? What is this, now?
...I thought it over a lot. But I just don't know how to strengthen my mind...
That's why I beg of you, please make me your student! I'll even give you more carrots after this!
Ah...you really are a weirdo.
Fine, but only if you can cook up a feast with all these carrots.
Yes, teacher!

True Strength: Increase evasion/defense under interception fire.

A thing about Fencers: not only are their shields super tiny, but they actually do not provide any extra defense, even when hitting them - it just counts as part of the body hitbox. Oh, and they got downgraded to use the same armor as Lancers instead of the blast suits of Armored Techs. Admittedly they were broken in VC2, but now they're just useless.

VC2 didn't have missions where the enemy goes first. I liked them - they usually mean you restart after the first turn when you realize that, but they give a much better feel to actual defense and retreat missions. They're also harder to get an S rank on, thanks to the fact that it ends after the last enemy turn, so you get one less phase than you might think.

They have at least one niche use: if when you capture a camp the connected one has lots of defenders/defenders in cover they can clear it well while leaving sandbags intact. Probably makes sense to use the Shocktrooper/Fencer unit we didn't meet yet which has a negative potential triggered by movement for this...

There is not a single unit outside of anti-interception potentials or Armor techs that can last 4 seconds against MG turrets. The HP goes down fast, and if a gun starts their firing animation, they will get a burst in before you fully enter aim mode. And that burst takes a good quarter out of most units.

At least most units can kill turrets once you hit their rear, but they auto-rotate so you go can go from safe to dead real quick. Then you have real rear end in a top hat placements like that last mission that had a single MG turret placed on top of a camp, isolated in a long corridor with no other approach.

cuntman.net
Mar 1, 2013

You could use a tank or armored tech to turn the turret around then use another unit to attack the rear. That might not actually be any more efficient than using a lancer to hit it from the front repeatedly but still

That's another thing that made interception fire so much deadlier in VC3 compared to 2 - not only do enemies deal actually significant damage now, but the windows for starting and stopping fire are much smaller, making it nearly impossible to cheese past things with the aim trick.

Hello? Can you hear me? ...Perhaps if I shout? AAAAAAAAAH!

Just got orders saying the Nameless don't have to deploy on the next mission.
That's quite unusual. I wonder what happened?
Heard the guy in charge is a glory hog. You know the type.
Then I pity the soldiers under his command.
Yeah. Even if it's the army, I feel bad for them.
Hmm....
Hmm? Something wrong, Serge?
What, you got a stomach ache or something?
Wasn't that just Alfonse and you....
Oh, right.

Huh?
Are you trying to get a pardon as well?
Don't tell you you believe in that transfer stuff as well?
No, that's not it.
It's just I always ask Kurt to put me in the front lines. I don't care if I'm stuck here.
You asked to be at the front? Are you sure you're alright?
Did you transfer from the army? Why would you willingly join this squad?

Whatever floats your boat, I guess.
A sinking boat, one might say.
That might have been true in the past....
But things have changed since Kurt's been here.
Huh? What about that guy?
He has an excellent service record.

A soldier would be lucky to be under his command. There's very few like him.
What soldier? Aren't you an engineer?
That doesn't matter!
A great commander makes use of any of his...*Cough extremely hard and long*
Hey, calm down Serge.
Ah...sorry about that.
*Thinks* Serge really seems to idolize Kurt....

Our allies have decided to abandon their foothold in the battle.
*Coughs hard and loud*
Keep it down.
...My apologies. Please, continue.
Serge, if you're having that much trouble, you can go visit the medical tent.
No, it's nothing, captain! Please don't pull me out of the battle!
Hey, relax man. We're not under direct orders right now, so just take a nap or something.
No! I'm not going to rest!
You know, you've been acting very weird lately....
I've always felt Serge and Kurt were very similar. They take things very seriously, and that includes their sense of "humor."

*The rest of the squad laughs about it*

....
All right, settle down! Let's get back to the briefing.

Once we reach the rendezvous point, the enemy's chance of pursuit is low.
Nice! Finally an easy mission!
Things are easing up for our squad, at least this time.
So we're not fighting again....
Man, what's with you? You have bloodlust or something?
It's certainly not a trait I would expect of Serge.
...Never mind.

*Later that day, at the firing range*

*Fires multiple gunshots*

This is bad. My aim will get worse at this rate.
Ah, there are you. Serge, when did you learn to fire the gun so well?
...Just a whim.
Well, that's quite a "whim" you've got to hit all those targets. Are you really just an engineer?
...Yes.
Hmm, with that much skill, you might've been....

Hmm?
As I am now...
My body is already a battlefield. I'm just grateful to be alive.
I'm...not following.
I'm leaving. You can practice here if you want. *Leaves*

I thought you said the chance of pursuit was low?
It seems their victory was greater than I thought, and gave them confidence to press further.
Great, now what?
With the army in disarray from the sudden attack....
Our orders are to cover their retreat.
...Figures.
Things did look to be too good to be true.
So what's the plan?
We're ordered to bring up the rear, and block the Imperial assault.

They think a small fence will stop an avalanche.
...Like I said, figures.
....
Captain, allow me to do it.
Serge?
If the mission is to just delay the pursuit...
I"ll volunteer for a solo operation.

And how do you plan on doing this?
I was a sniper in the army. Just give me a good location...
And I can keep them in their tracks!
Serge you...you're talking suicide!
A sniper...that explains your "whim."
Captain, please authorize the mission.
Denied.
Tsk!

I agree.
Now then. We should quickly come up with a plan of our own. Here's my plan...
Understood, sir....*Thinks* But I...

*Time passes*

*Back at the Nameless*

Captain! Serge has engaged the enemies on his own!
He what?!
That idiot! Kurt, send me out to rescue him!
Calm down. The plan's changed, our objective is to rescue Serge.
But what about the army's orders?

Serge is going to wish the enemy got to him first, after this.
Move out!

So Kurt's group starts at the top of this spiraling hilltop, with a bunch of construction points.

Meanwhile, Serge is at the southern end of the long, grass map with a Supply Crate to protect. The crate itself is fine since it's drat sturdy, but the real issue is keeping Serge alive.

Having him as a Sniper is a decent choice, but your best best is to make him a Shocktrooper and park him near that sandbag.

Otherwise, it's a very standard kill-all mission.

Am I...still alive? Why? I thought running off by myself would finally do it....
Haha...*coughs extremely hard*
This pain...so I really am still alive....

Captain, I...
My plan worked out, after all--

*Kurt immediately punches Serge*

Don't treat your life like a plaything!
No, it's not that! I...
Your life is precious to this squad's success.
Captain, I...
I know that! But I don't have much time to live!
*Coughs hard*
What?

Because of that, they made me retire from the army. But I still wanted to fight. The Nameless was the only place that would accept me, to give me what I want.
....
Ever since that diagnosis, I've been constantly looking for a fitting place to die.
That's the only way I can go in peace! By dying on the battlefield...captain, that's why I disobeyed you....

I won't die on a hospital bed, getting weaker and weaker as time passes by....I won't allow that to happen!
I'm so afraid....

*A moment passed*

...Are you finished?
Huh?
Normally, disobeying an order would result in death by firing squad. However, that would be too merciful for your case. Instead, you will receive a harsher punishment.
As of today, you are ordered to the Nameless as long as you live. And if you violate those orders, you will be transferred to the army hospital.
You will never leave from there ever again, mark my words!
Captain....

Captain...*sniff* I...captain...!
Did I make myself clear?!
Yes, sir!

*Thinks* Thank you, captain. Thank you for making me feel alive again.

It was probably noticed, but Reila, Imca, and Gusurg have been largely absent from these fragments despite also being main characters. Rewind back to VC2 when Zeri and Cosette were at times major cogs of classmate missions, despite the fact that classmates literally can't die and thus don't have the Fire Emblem clause of possibly not having them available. Deit of all people have more cameos in fragments.

Cosette especially was basically Avan's replacement in some quests, including literally doing the exact same role for Morris and Coleen, right down to appearing from a bush.

Not disagreeing with your basic premise, but apparently Deit's character is supposed to stand in as a generic, non-protagonist Darcsen soldier (ie: his life sucks and he's depressed), so I don't think it's too unusual to have him show up all the time.

Off the top of my head, there are an equal number of career criminals, voluntary transfers, and poor schmucks who pissed off the wrong guy. The bulk of the rest are cases like Leila, Clarissa, Giulio, and Annika. They don't think they did anything wrong, but they were found guilty of crimes of varying severity - though I think Annika would be able to claim self defense under normal circumstances.
