Vicodiva posted:Covering has a massive history in Christian cultures. ...and Judaism, and Islam. Evidence of covering dates in the Abrahamic tradition back at least to like 3000 years ago in Jewish society and the original covering in Islam (And really the whole idea for a new religion) almost certainly were inspired by Muhammad's business trips to the Byzantine Empire, where it was the style at the time for Christian women to be covered. On top of that, the Persians and other nearby societies practiced covering as a sort of sign of nobility since it was believed that only a lesser person has to care about moving their head fully or whatever, and since people like to feel rich or important that naturally spread throughout the Muslim from there. In modern terms, the reason Christians won't force a woman to completely cover is because Muslims are The Enemy by tradition even though a lot of the poo poo you'll find in Saudi Arabia is exactly what a fundie would want, just with a different language attached to it. Obligatory Toast posted:Yes. They don't care, they'll cherry pick anything as long as it'll suit their bullshit. What's really fun is there are websites where you can look up bible passages and it includes all the different English language translations and half of them vary wildly from one another so you can have three sentences that all mean something mildly or completely different depending on which bible you have. Now imagine that game happening over a number of centuries from one language to the next (some of which aren't even spoken anymore). At this point it's all pretty much meaningless and devoid of any of its original context. The only thing you really need to take away from the bible is "Don't be a dick." That's really all Jesus was on about, but it just gets lost in a sea of whacky rituals and petty squabbles among different sects.

Fiend posted:Besides, it's not like they don't have Jesus. For these people, it's all Paul all the time. You hardly ever hear them quote anyone else; it's that bitter old misogynist\misanthrope\general fun-hater they love, even if half of the stuff he wrote conflicts with what Jesus said in the Gospels. There's actually a lot of interesting early Christian religious history about the struggle in the early Church as to who had primacy, St Peter or St Paul. Peter was a lot more mellow in general and more in tune with Jesus' teaching, but he mainly concerned himself with Jews who had converted to follow Christ. He was key in forming the dogma of the early Catholic church. Paul, in contrast, was the official minister to the Gentiles who joined the movement (he was culturally suited for this, he was one himself and a former Roman enforcer) and his letters to churches under his supervision are what most of fundamentalism is based on. Between that and the aforementioned cherry-picking of the Bible (if you want something hateful and/or depressing to read about God, the Old Testament and Paul are your go-to guys) the fundamentalist Baptist movement has come to virtually ignore most of the rest of scripture, especially that "love your brothers and sisters as I have loved you" and "care for the poor and wretched" and "judge not lest ye be judged" stuff that Jesus said, to focus instead entirely on the teachings of a woman-hating, dour authoritarian. bonestructure fucked around with this message at 16:36 on May 31, 2015 |
