Ya but that one kinda makes sense as a local historical nod since Chemnitz was called Karl-Marx-Stadt in commie times, and their bigass monument to him which is now a tourist attraction didn't get torn down because the Boches are kinda careful with remembering their history. Stalin on a cc though...

Ive never read a russian novel that ended happily. I've only read one (Crime and Punishment) though I guess Punishment is kind of a happy ending and also I guess Nocnoy Dozor where everything is bad but they go back in time and undo it so it's all good?

I me a guy who grew up in germany but moved to russia two years ago, very interesting talking about the differences in culture.

The funniest thing was that he told me that smiling and laughing in russia is a sign of weakness or dishonesty when done in public, he was completely blown away at everyone laughing and having a good time while in Berlin.

Laughing is a sign of weakness haha what a hosed up country.

i had a russian teacher once who was a really happy guy and when he was in russia he would go around smiling at everybody and if someone asked him how he was doing he would be like "I'm good", like you would here in Canada

everyone thought he was loving crazy cause no one smiles at strangers there and if someone asks how you are it's just an opportunity for you to tell them about how lovely your life is, or at most say "not bad" or "im normal"

This is a good article:
http://www.nybooks.com/blogs/nyrblog/2014/sep/02/dying-russians/

Basically russia has much higher rates of depression, suicide and also death by accidents compared to western european countries.

Was a combination of any sort of safety net getting yanked out in post-soviet russia and also how russian culture tends to have fatalistic attitude don't/can't change anything.

In some regions it may in part stem from the extremely high latitude. High northern winters gently caress with your brain chemistry because you don't get enough sunlight. Nordic countries have markably higher suicide rates than would be expected given their high standard of living and strong social safety nets.

Russians are somewhat unique since it took tyrants like Peter the Great to make even consider or least force them to change their ways.

Lots of other foreign visitors like Custine or de Tocqueville observed a fatalism in the russian mindset, "it can't be helped"

It was actually ripped off of the story Alamut by Vladimir Bartol, a Slovenian, who in turn was influenced by Dostoevsky's line "If God doesn't exist, everything is permitted."

Bartol's line is "Nothing is an absolute reality, all is permitted."
