I thought zombeavers sucked. It wasn't gory enough or funny enough to be worth watching but the song at the end was good.

Oh well, lesson learned, no such thing as a free lunch. Hopefully my gig connection wasn't prioritized for bandwidth sharing.

Tonight's flick was Toad Road. Very based on tone and not so much plot. Having spent a significant portion of my life in and around Lancaster County, I felt it really captured the feeling of being a young trashy loser in York, PA. Kind of felt like a David Lynch-lite.

So after HBO Now was unusable last weekend and I decided not to renew, it's been flawless this week  I've mostly been watching boxing since I don't want to get sucked into a series I can't finish before my subscription runs out but (amazingly) I didn't have any hiccups watching Citizenfour tonight. Really good documentary on Snowden, by the way. I had no idea his girlfriend moved to Russia to be with him. It leaves you feeling a little optimistic by the end, but that John Oliver bit about Snowden a few weeks ago where nobody even remembers who he was kinda measured my reaction.

I'm just watching The Den. Ice previously disregarded it because it looks like a crappy Saw derivative but it is actually kinda creepy and quite well done. It's about a lady who is doing a study on webcam sociology but takes a seriously bad turn and ends up being stalked by a serial killer/psycho who targets all her online associations. The entire thing is presented via her webcam and desktop and unfortunately my laptop was sitting right behind me and started making weird beeps during it so maybe I freaked out more than was appropriate but drat they nailed it! A good creepy psychological slasher. Then lasy night I got must if the way through The Strange Colour of Your Body's Tears after a few red wines and really want to watch it sober. Fantastic imagery of an art deco Paris. Trippy visuals, weird storyline. Really enjoyed it!

Yeah sorry Late Phases. It reminded me a lot of House of the Devil (they even share a cast member) but instead of the whole film building up to something happening, Late Phases has strategically placed bursts of "poo poo happening".

I am not a fan of her stand up, though. I'd say the same for Artie Lange and Bob Goldthwait. Especially Bobcat. His Netflix special was pretty okay, but I've heard him tell the same stories elsewhere to much better effect. Plus, lots of bonus Jay Mohr bashing. edit: speaking of streaming content, her segment on Drunk History was pretty good, and I always crack up at how she sobs about Jim Morrison's place in history at the end. The film never delves too deeply into the personal lives of any except one of them, but all of the girls are completely self-conscious about what they are engaging in, including the risks and exploitation; and the interestingly consistent motivation among all of them is that they've basically got 'the graduate syndrome' and are just completely alienated from small town suburban or rural life. It really is a film remarkably like the Old Hollywood 'farm girl goes to the big city' fantasy and not a properly objective documentary. (There's, as is typical, zero attempt to contrast the violent, degrading pornography which is foregrounded with more sentimental and sensual pornography.)

Yeah, that's pretty much what I was going to say, it's a documentary that relies on the thesis "porn is somehow inherently bad" which isn't really true. I've known half a dozen girls that did some form of porn in the 2000s "Suicide Girls boom", mostly amateur, and have nothing bad to say about it at all. One of them did hardcore porn, and from there got into the design/marketing of a porn company, and was making like twice the money I have ever made in my life and you'd never guess she has at some point in her life been filmed with multiple dicks inside her. e: I guess what I'm saying is that, since sexuality is something humans are going to express and sell and consume, instead of demonizing the industry, acknowledge that it's a legitimate thing to do with your life. The spitting irony of its inclusion of Belle Knox is that there's plenty of evidence to substantiate her belief that porn is liberating, but Hot Girls Wanted manages to dispel the significance of her supposed mainstream acceptance by contrasting it with snide teenage women calling her out for whitewashing how much degrading, uncomfortable, unprofessional poo poo they seem to believe is universal to the experiences of up-and-coming porn stars. All they can say is that she has a great publicist, which is contrasted with Riley basically just sitting on his laptop and driving them to locations, acting as a kind of glorified pimp. Crucially, none of these girls think of pornography as just a fling. They are trying to create careers, but like any industry, pornography is wicked sexist. The film doesn't really fully explore the economic side of getting into porn, largely because I suspect that the filmmakers didn't want to make this into an 'instructional video,' but this becomes another element of great sociological important that gets lost in a superficial obsession with content. Presumably, all of these girls would still be living in borderline, penny-pinching squalor if their agent Riley actually did his job and only landed them 'dignified' roles. This is unfortunate, because this economic side, this intersection of sexism and capitalism, is way more critical to the continuing violence, exploitation, apathy, and drug/alcohol abuse among the subjects.

I had been putting it off for a long time but I finally got around to watching the first couple of seasons of The Americans on Prime and although there's an element of campiness to it and a lot of implausible poo poo goes down, hey, it's an FX show and I'm able to suspend my disbelief. Found this espionage/family drama to be increasingly engaging as it went on. It taking place in the early eighties, I think that they did an excellent job across the board with the wardrobe and the soundtrack is awesome. The acting is pretty great across the board and Keri Russell (of Felicity fame lol) is sexy as hell for what it's worth. I found that the first season was a little uneven but it actually improves in season 2. I'd say that from what I've seen it's more consistent than my other favorite espionage-centric show, Homeland.
