The thing to do against the kraken is the same as the thing to do against the Ubercharge in TF2 - kill the person before they get it, bait them into using it suboptimally, don't fight them in melee range so you have ample time to escape. Kraken is honestly one of the least scary supers for me, I feel like its best used as an emergency button when you overextend with the roller and need to get out of dodge than it is a way to get sick frags.

Krakens slower then normal squids so shoot a wide path and flee, don't go in a straight line either if you can help it. I kite Krakens pretty often by jumping to their side so by the time they turn around they're low on time.

The abilities you get at the start are actually pretty great. Having extra slots seems to not make too much of a difference. Mostly they just have access to more weapons. Teams are random, so you'll probably be winning about half the time.

I like using it to make a push into the enemies base towards the end, you can usually get a couple of kills on the way and position yourself pretty well since you can just swim through their ink

Yeah like I really like the jet squelcher but it doesn't seem like the best option in turf war because it kind of sucks at covering the ground (It's a long range splattershot but it's got a kinda slow fire rate and runs out of ink really fast) I bet it would be great in the TF2 Payload style mode though.

iirc it's a KotH mode (whoever has the most paint in a given area), a payload mode, and something called raincaller something.

had that happen to an opponent earlier, i got close to their spawn and realized I'd seen no opposition at all, and then there was one dude standing on their spawn pad impotently squirting at us  as we mopped up.

felt pretty bad for him so i hosed off to our end for the rest of the match. ended up with 80% coverage for our team.

The Aerospray is good but it's not that good; I've seen them lose. Heck, I've seen them lose hard, even when the RG player abused the end-of-round Inkstrike. (Including times I saw teams with three or even four Aerospray variants on the same team.) It's fun, and it's good, but it's not some win-button like some people are acting.

I have no idea what you mean by this. I'm not saying the rollers are super sick weapons you will easily dominate matches with, they have a lot of downsides against smart players. They're just so good at covering turf and can also be used in combat effectively with a little thinking so its pretty easy to consistently do well with them. This all assuming a competent enemy team. If the enemy team is stupid then yeah the roller is broken but any weapon can be against bad players.

Speaking of which, highlight of my matchmaking day was turning into a kraken and splatting 4 people at once because they all decided to camp the giant pillar on the skatepark for some baffling reason.

Rollers really aren't too good at covering turf 7nless they're totally left alone though. They're best as defensive weapons because it's so easy to flank them and keep them from covering large areas. If they pop kraken run otherwise they'll be on the defensive 9 times out of 10

On a whim I switched from trying .52 gals and Blasters almost exclusively to the Custom Splattershot Jr. and instantly jumped from about third with good KDR to a consistent first with even better KDR. If it's not a matter of the volume-firing weapons being really good then its the other weapons needing to be a bit better to keep up. The difference is night and day.

What makes them bad at covering turf? They cover a huge area and its not like you move slower while using one. They're only bad at covering turf vertically, which doesn't count towards points so its not nearly as much of an issue when it comes to score. Also there's no reason they should be harder to flank than any other player. If anything flanking a good roller play would be harder since if they know the area ahead is clear they can angle the camera backwards without issue since you don't need to aim at all.

But my original point was that even a bad player with the roller can be somewhat useful because they're good at covering turf. And they are, which is why I regularly see lovely roller players with more points than most other guns in equally poor hands.

A fun thing on Blackbelly is that people still mistakenly assume the steep ramp-like shapes are the only way to climb up the center column. They don't bother to paint over the climbing-paths you put on other parts of the column (making it super easy to reclaim if you lose control of it), and while they're trying to paint up the ramps they're basically sitting ducks.

rollers are bad at covering turf because they only cover the ground immediately in front of them. with other things you can easily turn and give yourself an escape route to either side or backwards on top of spraying back and forth in front of you. rollers are good at the start of a map, but their lack of rage kills their ability to do lots of damage towards the end of a map and you're vulnerable to anything that you can't sneak up upon. the kraken is a good ability particularly if a team bunches up, but the ink line it leaves isn't that big and if you don't kill something you're pretty vulnerable.

The roller is amazing at covering turf which seems to be its primary job specifically because it always covers turf beneath you. You never get stuck in enemy ink with a roller, and it's actually fantastic at reclaiming territory in the second half where other guns would have to build paths in more slowly.

How many aero shots does it take to kill? 5-6? There are weapons that kill faster but not by much and the slightly lower killspeed is pretty much objectively worth it for the ink coverage, at least in the only gametype we have available now.

I think I like the dual squelcher an itsy little bit more because it shoots fairly fast, has considerably better range and comes with the echolocator which I basically just think is really really loving good but it's close.
