Cow and Chicken meanwhile was one of those shows like Rocko's Modern Life that hid dirty jokes everywhere. Most notably there was the episode (I believe later banned from CN) about "Buffalo Girls", an all female rough and tumble biker gang that comes in and eats all the carpets in the house.

Wasn't there another cartoon like this where one of the characters made a lesbian joke where he brought out a cardboard box and said something like "yeah, she said all I have to do is chow on this box!"

I can't remember the cartoon but I remember that scene and wondering how the hell that got past the censors, it was pretty drat funny at the time though.

I recall something similar in an episode of South Park.

It was the sea-monkey episode called "The Simpsons Already Did It" in Season 6. Cartman gets semen (he doesn't know it's semen) from a homeless guy, but the line of dialogue is "I just had to close my eyes and suck it out of a hose."

Yeah Duckman was pretty great, it's what I watched as a kid to make myself feel grown-up and I got at least 90% of the jokes even when I was 12. The other show I watched to feel grown-up was Mr. Show.

I didn't watch The State because I was like 8 at the time it was on, but I watched the whole series later and it was really good. Also 90's as gently caress.

I'd post more actual content from the show but it's all been taken down by Viacom who hate when people advertise their shows at no cost to them :)

the cardboard box joke was from the episode where the chick from species played their substitute teacher after Mr Garrison gets a nose job. also at one point all the boys were on the floor literally licking the carpet.

I wonder when Coldplay will become classic rock?

They're alternative rock at the minute, which is confusing because they are neither alternative nor rock. :v:

How about the Red Hot Chili Peppers? They've been recording music since 1983 (for reference, their first album came out in the same year as Pyromania by Def Leppard, and one year before Bon Jovi's first album) and I don't think I've ever seen them called classic rock.

Are Nirvana classic rock yet, or are they insulated from the label forever? Foo Fighters are called dad rock, but Nirvana gets a pass.

The classic rock station around my parents' house plays all that poo poo. My dad was asking me who Pearl Jam was because he liked Better Man. My mom can't tell the difference between Metallica and Bob Seger doing Turn the Page, or loving somehow Nirvana and David Bowie doing Man Who Sold the World.

Wheat Loaf posted:

Fivethirtyeight did an analysis last year of what counts as "classic rock" today based on frequency of play on classic rock stations. The analysis found a very solid core of classic rock stretching from 1973 until 1982, with that period accounting for close to 60% of all classic rock plays. However, there's a substantial area outside the core going back to around 1967 (with a few plays back to '63) and going forward to 1991 (when U2 (Achtung Baby), Metallica (Metallica), and Nirvana (Nevermind) all released albums that receive substantial classic rock play). The top 25 most frequently played bands make up somewhere around 45% of all plays, and are about who you would expect, but there are large regional variances as well. Some are expected, with west coast cities playing a lot of Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Others are odd, such as Seattle playing a lot of Yes.

Interestingly, what triggered the whole analysis was the author hearing American Idiot on a classic rock station. American Idiot is an outlier that's well outside the standard range for classic rock, but Green Day's early albums are right on the edge of modern classic rock.

The article also goes into how classic rock stations decide what counts as classic rock. Basically, stations with resources conduct market studies, identify people who like the music that makes up the core of classic rock, then they find out what else those people like.

Someone help me out here, because Google and Wikipedia have both failed me.

I'm trying to remember the name of a cartoon that featured 3 guys who were either cops or military, but they always did their thing in the trio. Each had their gear a specific color. As best I can remember, there was a blue, a green and a yellow, but I may have the colors messed up. Also, they each specialized in either air, ground or water. One guy's suit could turn into a plane, one guys suit could turn into a sub and one guys was a bike or a car or something.

I could have some of the details wrong, poo poo, it's been over 20 years, but this has bugged me for the longest time. Wikipedia doesn't list the show either, I've looked :( Also, pretty sure it was on Cartoon Network, but again, I could be wrong.

It's good to have a sense of scale.

My preferred classic rock station (No aux jack) got around the whole thing by changing from "60's, 70's, and 80's" to "70's, 80's and 90's". It worked, they still play all the core rock songs talked about in the study, but they get to pick and choose the rock-iest stuff from the 90's without too much complaint. It's kind of nice to hear CCR next to AC/DC next to Foo Fighters.

It IS weird to hear "Classic Rock 101!" then Wonderwall - Oasis though.
