Since we're the vanguard, failure is not an option here.
It's almost time to start the operation.
Not much of a choice left other than to move forward.
We must grasp overwhelming victory, as decreed by your queen!
Leila, will you be fine?
Do not speak to me. I am meditating my spirit right now.
Such a cruel thing to say to your partner--

*Leila slaps him*

Ah!
Before you begin your usual incoherent babbling, let me plan my path to victory.
If you asked me, this is how I concentrated my spirit before battle.
Is that so...are you finally learning from my lessons?
I was just admiring your focus, as it it is a rare sight to witness.
I don't know what you mean. I just understand the importance of today's battle, that is all.
Oh?

Peace? I never thought you would say such a thing.
I am quite serious about it. A world with no conflicts...don't you think that's a beautiful goal befitting a queen?
Leila...
Your eyes are dazzling right now.
Are you suggesting they normally aren't?
No, I just meant I never noticed the radiant shine until now.

Really, men have no foresight. Just like that man....*Walks away*
It seems she truly has the mind of a naive queen. A noble life and pure soul...
My foresight seems spot on, at the very least, my queen.

Back to the city, except now we have to destroy 3 supply crates across 3 maps. A lot harder than you think, since Lancers still take like 5 shots to kill one blasted thing.

Fun fact: Direct Command support attacks do not trigger on boxes!

Stupid boxes are in the middle of nowhere.

The last box, you can go on a porch above it. However, shoot near edge of the top because otherwise invisible fence will eat up your rocket.

Literally the only time I've used the Engineer's ammo-refill ability because the fence tricked me twice.

gently caress fences.

And a cornered animal is the most dangerous to approach.
If only we had some way to disrupt their attacks....
Really now! You people can keep on chattering!
Leila?
It's time to take the initiative! *Walks towards the enemy*
Leila, wait! It's too dangerous to go!

It might be a trick. Keep caution!
Hm....

You want us to what?!
You think you won already, huh?! The real battle's just begun!
What are you babbling about? You're just helping the cowards who turn and ran! Shameful! Just looking at you useless men make me furious!
C-commander, I think she's insulting us!
Come out for me, and I will use this whip to teach you what it truly means to be a soldier!
This woman is being too arrogant!
Calm down. We just need to hold this line until reinforcements arrive.

Very well, it looks like I have no choice!
Who will you choose: Your future Queen Leila, or the tyrant Maximillion? Answer me!
W-what?!
If you keep being involved in that madman's war, you won't have any more good fruit to eat! Now follow me! I will create a world without war for all of you!
What is she talking about? Has she gone insane?!
In fact, it would be better if you handed Maximillion to me right now!

Unforgivable! She dares to disgrace the Imperial royalty in front of our faces?!
Stand down! She's just trying to provoke us out of position!

*Explosions heard*

What?!
Thanks for having the attention span of a fly! Now die like one!
Bwah!
I-Impossible!
All units, charge! Rout the Imperials!

*The Nameless storm in*

My queen, you got your wish. They have surrendered to you.

*After the battle*

I must say, Leila, but you really deserve all the credit.
Credit? I don't care about that. You screwed everything up for me!
After all, I was finally going to have my willing servants!
Don't tell me...you weren't trying to provoke them?
What? Of course not! I was very serious about my offer!
Ah...ha.
I was but a step closer to getting world peace, too!

My lesson to the world's men is to have them all serve me. That is my vision of a peaceful world, after all.
As their queen, they would have unconditionally served me.
And THAT is my dream!
You're serious....aren't you?
Yes. How many times must I confirm this?
That ambition...there's no doubt I'm looking at a real queen....

That place, eh? I heard the Imperials have been exploring the place themselves lately.
...I hate deserts.
I can't imagine what would be the fuss over there, anyway. All there's left are some relics.
What ignorance you spout! Barious Desert is one of the most important sites for ancient history!
Do you know of the Darcsen Calamity?

The flourishing cities in the Barious region were also destroyed by the Darcsens. That is why it's a barren place now.
The Darcsens were the cause of this disaster...thus, the Darcsen Calamity.
You seem so happy to talk about this in my face.
I'm only repeating the common knowledge about it. Interpreting what it means is up for people to decide.
So you're saying as a scholar, you can just say whatever you want at any time?
Head cases like her can't help herself once a subject becomes part of history.
I didn't mean to offend, 56.
Hrm...none taken.

Central Barious still has remnants of ancient Darcsen buildings.
But the Empire hates Darcsens far more than Gallia. So why would they be interested?
That is hard to say. Maybe they are also hoping for a great discovery in where history sleeps?
Regardless, since the Imperial army is there, there must be something hidden!
Now if only I can investigate it myself....

How did a scholar of all people end up in the Nameless, anyway?
You can say I...provoked House Randgriz.
...Now I'm even more curious.
What a petty thing. Sentence to life here for such a simple thing?
Ah, since you say it like that, I will give you a prophecy myself.
Hmm? What are you talking about?
You'll be thanking me someday for this.
...Can you please stop being so cryptic?

No time.
I want to hear your thought on the Darcsen Calamity.
....
...Imca, are you listening?
....
Do you really think the Darcsen Calamity was caused by Darcsens?
Not. *leaves*

Hey. We're not your research subjects.
My apologies, but feelings being offended won't impede my research.
Because my mission is to find the truth in history!
Then just read some books instead.
Actually, that's exactly how I ended up here in the first place.
...What in the world did you read?

A shame, as that place was a gold mine for history. Unfortunately it seems only those of House Randgriz are allowed in there.
Wait, weren't you an associate university professor? Wouldn't that make you less likely to get arrested?
"The winner writes the history books."
To understand true history, you must find the forgotten truth from the losers!
But it seems finding this specific truth is more dangerous than I thought.
...You and Kurt certainly have your own way to express how a "genius" work.
By the way, I apologize again for any slander I may have proposed.
Even if you say that....

I should be able to change the future of your people.
Hmph. Nothing will change.
I'll take that as a challenge! Just wait and see!

Why they wouldn't want someone looking into those books makes sense, at least. We're still before the revalation that Cordellia is a Darcsen. That information's sure to be down in those books somewhere, and having some random professor (particularly one who's purposely checking up on Darcsen history) find it would be a major issue.

Time-line wise, right now the game's at a point before Cordelia is kidnapped by the Federation and then rescued by Squad 7. So this is still super early in the war as far as VC1 is concerned.

Marching in a desert like this...might as well just execute us now.
Everyone, hurry up! We have to seize the moment!
Where does she get the energy....
The allure of the ancient ruins are enough for me.
Captain, we haven't seen an inch of Imperial all day. Can't you just call it a day?
Denied. We can't head back until we figure out why the Imperials' objective here.
At the very least, we have to figure out the size of their squadron.
Well, it was a long shot. At least I tried....

Hmm?
I ask permission to investigate the Darcsen ruins.
For?
I want to know why the Imperials came to this particular relic. Besides, I was going to investigate it myself anyways after the mission....
No. That exceeds the scope of our mission.
Besides, you're forgetting the high chance of engaging combat.
Why are you so fixated on this particular history dump?
The fact that the Imperials deem it highly enough to constantly send troops....it's a strong possibility there's something important!
Just one hour would be enough.

Well, I was just saying....
The Imperials are here.
Oh! That's what you meant.
Everyone, prepare for combat!
Here we go again!

Valerie, what are you doing?! I said get ready!
Ah, yes sir!

Ah, the desert. Annoying AP-sucking place that's unkind to everyone except light APCs, and no sprinkler to make it better.

The notable thing about this place is introducing Gunners, which I have mentioned are far more deadly in VC3 because of how interception fire works.

Like, Hoooooly poo poo do not go past a gunner unless you like your APC exploded into bits.

Otherwise, it's a pretty generous 5 turns to clear out the enemies.

Let's hope reinforcements don't come anytime soon.
Captain, I have a new request.
What now?
Please let me investigate the enemy's supplies.
By seeing what they took from the ruins, I can deduct why they're here in the first place!
Understood. I'll allow it.
Thank you, sir!

*Time passes as Valerie searched around*

These large items they excavated might lead to exciting discoveries!
Hmm, most of these items are distinctly Darcsen, but....
It almost look like something from the Valkyria. Even the art is similar to those in the Randgriz archives.
What does this mean? These are clues to history's truth that were concealed.

Something possibly even better.
But it's hard to properly judge that until it's returned to a university for examination. My initial hypothesis is that Darcsen history has a huge hidden secret.
If we can break open the truth here, history itself can change forever.
Why, depending on the meaning of the relics, it's possible that Darcsens will be respected more.
Heh. You really are a naive scholar.
What do you mean?

The world just wants someone to blame...it wants us to take the blame!
Facts and history won't change the world as it is now.
But at the very least, the facts would be clear if the true histories were published.
The mindset of the Darcens might also change!
Stop speaking as if you know how Darcsens feel. It makes me sick.
I...My apologies.

Eh?

So implore you scholars to do your best, regardless.
...Yes, I see. It's still too soon to announce this discovery to the world.
The first thing we must do is create a world where this discovery can be published.

When I was doing my research into the inspirations for Valkyria, I always found it fascinating that they were drawing from the American 442nd Infantry Regiment, but it makes a lot of sense given the overall theme of the Nameless (bar a couple of real prizewinners we don't meet until later). In order to make a penal squad sympathetic, it was a great decision to base it on a real squad that was unconstitutionally imprisoned and fought like tigers anyway, given their one chance to get out of the internment camps.

The artbook plus the wikipedia article combination seems to confirm it was an inspiration: the real unit's motto is cited as "Go for broke", the same they wanted to give the game unit initially per these scans.

Plus, I spent a few years kicking around the idea of running a translated VC3 stream or hand translated LP, since I'm a huge fan of the series. My own hand translated LP, the translation patch, and the Tae/Apepresident LPs have all made that dream obsolete, so I'm just sitting back and enjoying one of my favorite games getting some well-deserved love :)
