The full-time job, used to it as we are, is not some natural state of human existence. Before the 1800s, few people worked a structured “work week.” That conceit was dreamed up by early industrialists, who needed to bring workers together in a factory at the same time to efficiently make products. For the past 100 years, the 40-hour job has been the centerpiece of work life because there was no better way for people to gather in one place at the same time to connect, collaborate and produce.

chile under pinochet is an actual success story though. a developed economy with serious structural problems was successfully reformed and experienced significantly more growth than its neighbors

allende's assassination was a crime, and the pinochet regime was horrible. we cannot excuse those sins by pointing to the economy. nor is it helpful to revise history to ignore the chilean miracle

the "chicago boys" succeeded in chile, however reprehensible their engagement with the regime.

Lyft driver in Seattle allegedly drags customer behind car after demanding sex

Lyft deactivated a driver in Seattle after police say he demanded sex from a rider before dragging her beside his car as she tried to retrieve her lost phone.

The Seattle Police Department described the incident here, which happened early Saturday morning around 1:30 a.m. in the Capitol Hill neighborhood.

After being dropped off by a Lyft driver at home, the victim realized she left her iPhone 6 in the vehicle. She used an iPad to call her phone and the driver answered.

However, the Lyft driver told the woman, “I’m working,” and “you’re not going to talk to me like that,” and “you don’t deserve your phone back,” while repeatedly hanging up on her, according to the police report. Eventually, he said he would bring the phone back if she had sex with him.

The driver returned to the victim’s home and met her outside. She noticed that he was holding her phone and tried reaching in the vehicle through the driver-side window. The driver then sped away while the victim’s arm was still inside the car, dragging her “slightly” and leaving her with “multiple lacerations and abrasions on her feet, legs, arms and hands.”

The woman then texted a friend, who contacted police. The victim’s phone was turned off when police tried calling the device. The victim was able to provide her e-mailed ride receipt from Lyft, which showed trip information along with a photo of the driver.

Investigators are working with Lyft to identify the driver. Here’s a statement from Lyft:

We take all matters involving safety extremely seriously. We immediately disabled the driver’s account upon receiving this troubling report. Our Trust and Safety team has been in touch with the passenger and we will continue to help in any way we can, as well as support the authorities in the ongoing investigation.
Like Uber and Sidecar, Lyft requires background checks of all its drivers. “As pioneers in transportation, we’re changing the industry with safety front of mind,” the company notes.

As a way to help “personalize” the ride experience, Lyft in March added driver and rider profiles, “a new feature that gives passengers and drivers the option to share fun facts about themselves and discover mutual friends and interests.”

In May 2014, a Lyft passenger punched his driver in the nose in Seattle after he was asked to stop smoking in the vehicle.

Earlier this year, a Cato Institute study found that Uber and Lyft were just as safe as taxis.

most retail jobs are computer scheduled and some are even assessed the day before your shift, so the only way to get a second job is to limit your availability on certain days. if you're even hired in the first place, limiting your availability is a quick road to unemployment. good luck getting scheduled while your kids are in school or anything convenient like that, human_work_unit_allocator_v3.exe has determined that you must work 7-11pm Wednesday and 8am-12pm Thursday and reminds you that these 29.5 hours a week are a gift and could drop down precipitously and without warning

"What about Fannie and Freddie?" he asked. "Government kept giving homes to black people, to help out black people, white people didn't get anything, and then they couldn't pay for them. What about that?"

I gave a quick response about how most experts would disagree with that assumption, that it was actually an oversimplification, and pretty dishonest, and isn't it good that someone made the video we just watched to try to clear things up? And, hey, let's talk about whether that was effective, okay? If you don't think it was, how could it have been?

The rest of the discussion went on as usual.

The next week, I got called into my director's office. I was shown an email, sender name redacted, alleging that I "possessed communistical [sic] sympathies and refused to tell more than one side of the story." The story in question wasn't described, but I suspect it had do to with whether or not the economic collapse was caused by poor black people.

My director rolled her eyes. She knew the complaint was silly bullshit. I wrote up a short description of the past week's class work, noting that we had looked at several examples of effective writing in various media and that I always made a good faith effort to include conservative narratives along with the liberal ones.
