It sounds like he wrote average fantasy but managed to get lucky and it got popular. I've picked up random books on iTunes for a dollar (or free) that've been about as well written as Kingkiller stuff and those books didn't include several hundred pages about going to school or recycling the same "met with girl/played music at a club/got in a pissing match with a shitlord noble" stuff over and over.

I stopped listening after they fired Tarja because holy poo poo Annete was horrible and that was a dick move. So I haven't listened to much of their stuff in the past decade, but it seems Floor is definitely an improvement over Annette and after giving some of their new songs a listen, it isn't bad. In fact they're almost as good as before but still not quite the same and feels like it's missing something--or maybe I'm just old as gently caress now and it's not my cup of tea anymore VVVVVV Lucky you! I wish I could have seen them in their early 00 prime and now I'll never get the chance But yeah I'm the same with that type of music now. I saw Nightwish live once with Tarja. It was a good show. I've sort of lost my interest in that sort of metal in the years since but I'm glad I got to see them in their prime.

MrFlibble posted:Theres nothing irrational about people who talk poo poo about Rothfuss/GRRMs/Whoevers writing speed. They enjoy authors work, author is taking a long time thus no work for them to enjoy. Well, it is irrational. Writing takes time. Complaining won't make it take faster. Wanting more story of a story you enjoy and being frustrated at how it's not out yet is, however, reasonable. It's reasonable to be irritated that he was incredibly over optimistic about when the next books would come out. It's reasonable to think the books have problems. It's reasonable not to like them. But that's not what the negativity in this thread looks like. It's not people being reasonable. It's people saying that Rothfuss doesn't write at all, or that he's not serious about writing. It's people shaking their head at how crazy Rothfuss is for being a little weird on reddit about a (stupid) question he's been asked dozens of times a day every day for years. It's people saying that Slow Regard is literally the worst book ever written. It's people who say Rothfuss's blog proves incontrovertibly that he is a terrible human being. (90% of his blog is either gushing about his children or raising children to build agricultural infrastructure in poor areas.) This is the dumb, irrational hate I'm talking about. I don't get the people who are crazy about Rothfuss one way or the other. I enjoy his work, but I don't get how he can be people's favorite author. I really don't get how people can have a seething hatred for him.

I can't argue anything else in your post unless you provide quotes but this stood out to me because I am certain that Slow regard isn't the worst book ever written. I am not saying it is the worst thing ever written. But I am going to be clear: Wise mans fear had serious problems that interfered with my enjoying the story as a whole but was recognizable as part of a story. Slow regard was poo poo. There is a difference between these opinions and there is a difference between poo poo and worst thing ever written. But it was poo poo.

So I guess it's not within the realm of possibility that he's grown in the many years since having written most of the books in college and realize the flaws in them that we've noted throughout and is probably rewriting the vast majority of it as a part of his revision process. You know, instead of 'loving lying'. Because that just seems much more reasonable.
