I've been thinking about who could be VP for the Dems a lot recently (because it's not like there's much else to think about on the Dem side). This led to chatting to a guy from the US consulate about it yesterday, and he dropped a name I hadn't considered but could be an interesting choice: Gary Locke. Any thoughts?

First thought: who? Second thought, after looking up who he was, was that it would play terribly with labor groups. Third thought, as I continued to read his bio was, "wow, he'd play terribly with labor groups even if he wasn't linked to America's China policies." I don't know if you're looking at him because you think that the Asian-American vote is important because, well, it really isn't. They tend to be concentrated in safely Democratic states so if you are doing it as a "voter bait" idea then there's much better groups to go for.

He's certainly qualified, but once you get past minimum qualifications here are the things that matter in picking a VP:

1. No hidden scandals.
2. Gets along with the Presidential candidate.
....
998. Race / gender.
999. Home state.

I know it's not the greatest but Bloomberg hosts a show called With All Due Respect that basically shows the highlights of the race every day online. It's hosted by the guys who wrote Game Change. It's not in podcast or YouTube form unfortunately (only via Bloomberg website), but it's worth a gander. Like PTI but for 2016 politics.

Ambassador to China until 2014. I don't know if that counts or not. Prior to that he was governor until 2005. However, truth be told, he was NEVER in the political spotlight, he's always been an under the radar guy who didn't find himself/his policies discussed in the national press regularly.

He got approved for the China post unanimously by the Senate....in the 112th Congress. He'd spent the previous two years as Obama's Secretary of Commerce. There's no clearer sign that he's popular, but a political null.

Like I said, Democrats would hate his record on labor even if he wasn't Ambassador to China. Commerce isn't really a major post anyway, remember Obama's on record as to wanting to do away with the whole thing.

The Brennan Center has found that this is true, but not through some sort of natural effect but because GOTV efforts respond more heartily in areas that are targeted with suppression. It is even possible attempts to suppress the vote actually have the reverse effect, by 'suppressing' those who wouldn't have voted anyway and energizing others to get out there and vote.

Obviously, it depends what level of suppression and how it's enacted. Preventing registration is probably worse than putting up barriers to voting.

Seriously, scratch any Actual Socialist (Democratic or otherwise) in the US and there's someone they're associated with that says Lenin was a hero or defends the Weather Underground. I was a college socialist in DSA (Bernie is/was a member) and every pragmatic discussion always devolved into some bullshit argument about "how we can best agitate for economic planning" or "what can be learned from Trotskyists?"

It's stuff that's bad not due to red-baiting, but rather because it's loving stupid.

Almost every socialist group in the US right now is spending all of their time and effort ranting about how Bernie isn't a real socialist and he's a tool of the Dems and Hillary's pawn and no true socialist would ever support a Zionist pig like Bernie Sanders.

This makes a lot of sense. But it seems different than suggesting that GOP voting or registration suppression efforts would be a problem to defend in a presidential debate.

Anyone who believes the GOP garbage about "voter fraud" was never going to vote for a Democrat anyway. But it seems like maybe a demoralized non-voter (from a marginalized group like immigrants, Hispanic- & African-Americans) who sees the Dems trying to do something for them might be inspired to vote for the first time in a while/ever.
