Darchangel posted:Yeah, I know. My dad doesn't look like he's 62, either. I had nothing to do with it, no clean livin' or anything. Just good genes. My dad is 67, but looks closer to 75 - likely thanks to 20+ years of alcoholism (he's been sober for over 20 now though) and over 40 years of smoking. My mom on the other hand, is 66, and looks a lot closer to... 55, aside from her hair color? Clean living? Me? That's adorable. About the only drugs most people have heard of that I haven't tried are heroin and PCP. I used to be able to say I've never touched needles, but I've had to use insulin a few times now. I've put more "research chemicals" into my body than I can remember. I used to keep a list of everything I had done, but threw it away when it exceeded 40 chemicals (that was 16 years ago, I've tried quite a bit more since then). Not anything I'm proud of at all, but it is what it is. All I do these days is drink a bit, and smoke a couple of times a month. I used to go through at least a few ounces of a month (at one point, at least an ounce a week), but (a) all I do is eat when I smoke that much (and get even fatter) and (b) I lose what little motivation I have. These day the only chemicals I ingest are for blood pressure and cholesterol. I really don't carry cash on me in general, but I make it a point to have at least or so on me when I attend a service. It's not the greatest by far, but given my income level, it's about all I can afford, especially since I drive ~45 miles each way to get there. Whenever I do start making a reasonable amount, I'd love to help out DUUF far more - in particular, their LGBT youth program (OUTReach Denton). There was a similar program in Dallas when I first moved to DFW (OUTYouth Dallas) that really helped me out a lot. And I consider Denton to be home, even though I don't live there at the moment. And even my instructor freely admits that once he passed his certs, he just started using Google for everything (I've actually called him out on being incorrect on a few things, and he apologized to the class and said it'd been a few years since his last took a cert exam, and said Google is a lot more reliable for up to date info). The little bit of stuff I learned from A+ was immediately kicked out of my brain after passing (finished both tests now, btw) - a lot of what they ask is either hilariously outdated, or can easily be handled by skipping some steps and just asking a couple of questions. I mean, seriously, if the PC keeps trying to boot and goes into a BSOD, then reboots, you don't need to ask them if the power cord is plugged in, nor do you need to check to see if the ATX cable is plugged in (though checking the ATX 12V cable wouldn't hurt). The A+ really made me feel like the people at Peterson/CompTIA had never done a day of helpdesk or desktop support in their lives. Super Aggro Crag posted:It annoying when someone says they are into cars but find out they dunno how to drive stick. One of my managers has every bolt on available for his Mustang. ... did I mention it's a V6, and automatic? Granted, a 2014, so it has tons of power anyway... He's been bitching about not knowing how to drive stick. Apparently a gay guy offering a straight guy "stick lessons" is offensive though, according to my boss. If I can teach myself how to drive stick by buying a rusted out Honda with far north of 200k, then you can drat well learn how to handle 3 pedals from a fag. I've taught 3 people how to drive manual in this car so far, and one of them liked it so much that he used to drive me to deliveries before/after his shifts for over a month (he was a CSR/host/busboy at my old store, I'd split the tips with him when he drove me around in my car, and I'd just take a powernap while he was driving). I didn't find out until later that my insurance wouldn't have covered him, since he was under 25 (he was 16, I think he's 17 now). MikeyTsi posted:Mother got diagnosed with cancer. ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffuck. Sorry to hear man. You know we're here if you need to talk. I'm pretty much guaranteed to die of dementia, alzheimer's, a heart attack, cancer, and/or a combo of those. Three of those run in both sides of my family. Heart issues in one side, but I already have health issues that even my mother doesn't have (diabetes and "coronary artery disease" whatever that is, I guess a fancy way of saying "your arteries are clogged to poo poo"). My maternal grandfather and maternal grandmother both died of heart attacks. blk posted:My wife is driving me crazy. She drives an 05 Civic with 110k miles and moderate wear and tear - dent in the hood, rock chips, key mark down the side (someone keyed her when she first bought it), and now she's scraped the driver side of the bumper cover on the rock wall on her driveway. It doesn't look that bad and is hardly noticable from a few feet, but she's insiting on spending $600 on a repair. We're trying to trim our budget, about to buy a house, and don't know how much longer we'll have this car (it depends on whether it will fit a rear facing car seat and if we get a dog). I don't see any point in putting so much more money in it for something more minor, but she won't give it up. It's her car and ultimately her decision, but it seems like a waste to me. .... it's a 10-11 year old Civic (depending on build date), it's almost fully depreciated. I'd just try to find another 7th gen Civic in a junkyard of the same color; the fading will be a little different, but you're looking at maybe $150 at a self service junkyard instead of a full replacement. I mean, I'm a guy and don't get female logic in general (moreso since I'm a gay guy, so I really only interact with females when I have to - i.e. at work), but at that point, I'd really just focus on keeping it running and driving. I've been fighting the same battle with my mother - she went from being pretty well off to filing bankruptcy. She'd never owned a car with over 40k until she bought her Avalon. She bought it new - 2003 model year - has almost 150k on it now. It has a lot of parking lot dings and scratches, and pukes oil from nearly every seal that handles oil, but I do pretty much all of the maintenance for her that doesn't involve gaskets/seals (because gently caress removing the intake manifold to do the most basic of seals), and keep an eye on fluids. It could use new shocks, but beyond that it runs and drives like it has 15k on it, and the interior looks almost new. I have paint falling off of my 2006 GM in chunks (only from the side skirts for now), and I owe far more on the loan than it's worth. But I'm not about to fix the paint. With its age (build date of 6/05) and miles (115k), any money that goes into it goes into maintenance, and keeping it dead as rocks reliable. The only way it gets body work is if insurance is paying for it, unless I happen to gently caress something up myself, AND can find parts in a junkyard (protip: the coupe version of my care is rare as poo poo to begin with; I've only ever seen one other coupe in the same color in person - it has one cracked body panel, but the crack is hidden under another panel, so I don't give two fucks.. for now). And the Civic should easily handle a rear facing car seat. The 7th gen (01-05) is surprisingly roomy. Somewhat Heroic posted:Sorry to hear. My wife and I were talking the other day about how we don't have any grandparents so that means our parents will be next. We've got great relationships with them and they with our kids. Life is an interesting thing, fickle at times but somehow things continue moving towards the next thing. You can get through it, even though I'm some random on the Internet, I still care. I lost my last grandparent in 2012. The day after her birthday, actually. Getting that call was really rough, and I still remember that morning really well. Didn't have classes that day, went to a thrift shop to get a swimsuit so I could hit up the pool at the student rec center (they had an awesome hottub, couldn't afford to drop more than $5 though). Mom called me, I answered in the parking lot, she said "she's gone", and I just lost it. I sat there crying for about an hour, then bought a couple of boxes of wine (1 box = roughly 5 bottles), went back to my dorm room, and got absolutely shitfaced for about a week. Bad enough that I couldn't even handle waking up without a drink; thankfully they had a medical office on campus, and I was able to get a script for Librium to get me through finals (after which I checked myself into a hospital). The hosed up part? I was attending a state university at the time. One of my instructors told me I would lose up to 20 points off of the next exam if I missed classes to attend the funeral, and actually suggested I have a family member use a phone to take a video of her funeral. No exceptions, even when I scanned a copy of her death certificate and emailed it to him. I still have the email too, but since he was tenured, nobody would (and still won't) gently caress with him. So uh, if anyone plans on going to UNT, don't ever take a class with Dr. Chng. I got kicked out of class one day when my phone went nuts over a tornado warning (along with most of the other people in the class of ~350 - look up this tornado outbreak, one tornado touched down about a mile from campus, and he still flipped his poo poo about people trying to leave when the sirens were going off). Anyway, tl;dr my parents are next. Not looking forward to it at all. My (natural) dad is the only one who has long term care insurance; mom's family has a strong history of dementia/alzheimer's (as does dad's, though "supposedly" it skips generations? so I'll be the one to get brainfucked, most likely). Stepdad's family just turns schizophrenic with a side of bipolar as they age; stepdad is the youngest, and he's been diagnosed bipolar for over 10 years (and recently diagnosed as schizophrenic). His oldest brother has been in a mental hospital for over 6 months.

I've had the same bicycle for 6 years now. I tried replacing it after the bottom bracket got wallowed out from my quads of thor, but no bike has come close to replacing it. I finally got off my rear end and replaced the bb30 bottom bracket with a praxis works collet adapter to gxp and today is the first ride. I can't wait! I've never had the bike set up like this. Black everything. Black saddle, black cables, black and pink bar tape, black tires, black wheels. It looks amazing. It's also lighter than my wife's 50cm specialized allez a1 comp!
