Evil Mastermind posted:I'm really hoping at some point Cecil says flat-out that he doesn't have a third eye. What's so wrong with this conception of Cecil? I really don't understand. I get that the suit-and-tie design is different from "furry pants and honeycomb hat", but this is only the second time his clothing has ever been mentioned as far as I remember. And some people in Night Vale really do have extra eyes. The show also kind of has an eye motif, right down to the logo, so associating it with Cecil seems reasonable.

I like the suit-and-tie design, but I don't want to impugn on the creators to portray their own character in any particular way. Personally, I find the extra eye to feel kind of forced. There's also the symbolic value to consider, that a character with a third eye immediately appears to be more insightful (which is not to suggest he is uninsightful either) that I interpret Cecil to be.

I don't think that depicting Cecil with a suit and tie is really impugning on anyone, but otherwise I get what you mean. Let's rephrase: I can understand if people don't like the design, but I'm surprised at how much some of the posters in this thread don't like it, to the point where a few are even extending their contempt to the fans who like it. I'm trying to understand where this reaction is coming from.

Yea, I basically imagine Cecil Palmer...with weirder clothes. Did the suit and tie thing come from his usual attire for live shows, or was it around before that? Also yes, best weather is Sni Bong because it was the only song I knew and loved before I heard it as the weather. And because it's on one of my favorite episodes.

I don't know much about designing characters, but I would think the usual vest/tie/glasses came from the idea of giving him a calm and refined, if a little nerdy look to pair up with his "talk radio host" voice and role. Plus the only description of his appearance prior to the latest episode is from Sandstorm, which stated he wears a bow tie (granted it also stated that he has solid black eyes).

Of all the male radio announcers I've known, the calm and refined ones wear polo shirts and khakis most of the time (which is how I imagined Cecil before I started seeing pictures of him in live shows). Only sports announcers and managers wear anything approaching businesswear. But that was small-town commercial radio, not public, so YMMV.

I'd seen tons of fanart before I started listening, so I already had a picture of the standard Cecil and Carlos in my head (except the third eye- that never made sense to me). But I like that they never give anything explicit about Cecil, so people can see him however they want.

Yeah, a lot of people on Tumblr are crazy, but there's plenty of sane people there too if you're careful about who you follow. That said, I certainly can't blame you for hating it. Hell, I know that tons of people on Reddit are normal and that the mouth-breathing, fedora tipping MRAs are the minority, but I still avoid that place like the plague.

I mean it's also Night Vale; imagine him looking however the gently caress you want him to look there's literally no "right" way, it's all in your head.

There are still times I imagine that there's nobody actually in the recording booth, just a voice that spontaneously emits out of anything vaguely metallic every evening. There was an episode early on where he ponders the existence of literally anyone and everything else, when rather he should have been doubting his own. Cecil Gershwin Palmer may someday prove to be limited and mortal, but the Voice of Nightvale is a thing that persists. Sorry, I don't really know where I'm going with this. It's like 2am over here.

I'm about 8 episodes in. It's ok, but I hope the announcer gets better/more comfortable, or they eventually have guest announcers. Right now he sounds like someone trying to read something he thinks is really really funny with a straight face, and it feels like a lot of the comedic timing suffers. It gets better right?

There are no guest announcers (well, maybe for one-and-a-half episodes), but yes, Cecil's delivery gets much better over time. I'd say by the end of the first "season" (around episode 25) he becomes a really strong actor.

It feels like I'm hearing someone who was just given copy, and is reading it out loud for the first time, slowly, monotonously, over-enunciating, to make sure he "gets" each sentence, so that on the next take he can start to play with it, figuring out what to emphasize, where the comedy is, etc. But I'd rather hear the final take. It's possible that I just don't love his delivery style, I listened all the way up to episode 27 tonight on my 12 hour shift. Looking forward to that book though!

It's not like the person got on JFink/Cranor's Twitter or something and started in like "how loving dare you", and I'm certainly in no position to dictate what other people should and shouldn't be offended by. Nobody is. poo poo, I don't think they were really even all that offended anyway. Tl;dr: I'm an rear end in a top hat for e-cred.

Yeah, after a few episodes he sounds basically like your standard NPR announcer to me. Then a bit later on as we start getting into more personal stuff he opens up on that a bit and starts putting more personality into it. That's the part I'm not sure I like.

I like to think the in-universe reason Cecil's voice becomes more lively during the first season is because of CARLOS melting his freaky Night Vale heart.

So I've been leaving the whole show on repeat in my room because it's wonderful background noise and there's a line I noticed in the first episode, one that I really hope they do something with at some point: "Well, we've all been scientists at one point in our lives"
