KakerMix posted:I mean....women....in my shows.... There's two different things here. When this story first blew up we saw all kinds of media people jumping to suggest that the show absolutely needed a woman. I'll give MattD1zzl3 the benefit of the doubt and assume his post is responding more to that side of things than the overall concept of a woman in a starring role on Top Gear. Trying to shoehorn someone in to the show just because of what's between their legs is idiotic and will make the show (or almost any other show where a casting decision is made primarily based on gender) worse. That said, there's nothing wrong with a woman hosting the show either. I don't care what bits a presenter has as long as they can drive well enough to hoon the latest supercars around the airfield or whatever track they happen to be on, do dumb things in in contraptions built out of beater cars, and occasionally actually talk about some facts. Looking at the list of rumored names I have no idea how Jodie Kidd is as a presenter but she seems to know enough to talk shop and can certainly handle herself behind the wheel so I'd be willing to bet she'd at least be better on camera than Tanner Foust and there's no question she's a better driver than Adam Ferrara. Neither are very high bars but that's at least enough to show she could probably be entertaining to watch after a season or two of settling in. Sue Perkins on the other hand would likely be a nightmare as it seems like the only reason she got brought up in all this is some journalists looking for an anti-Clarkson. Putting her on Top Gear would be as nonsensical as choosing Chris Hardwick in that they're both decent on TV when in their element but neither seem to have the remotest interest in cars. I think this BBC exec has her head on straight about it: http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/top-gear-could-be-fronted-by-a-woman-bbc2-boss-says-10194190.html posted:BBC2 controller Kim Shillinglaw said she was not thinking of Jeremy Clarkson’s replacement “in terms of gender”. Basically in my opinion anyone who really cares one way or another whether a woman is involved in hosting the next incarnation of Top Gear is wrong. If you think there must be a woman, you're wrong. If you think there can't be a woman, you're wrong. What matters is how good of a fit they are for the show's formula, whether they're yet another old straight white man or a transgendered biracial lesbian woman isn't relevant to entertaining me with cars. The Stig has proven that none of the normal human qualities are absolutely critical to being a valuable part of the show.

Goons in 'not understanding humour' shocker. The irony is ridiculous considering which website you're on too. To add something though, I really don't care what sex any of the presenters are so long as there's a bit of piss taking and joviality regarding challenges and such. Yes I certainly don't mind a female presenter who is a natural fit. But top gear for years has been a very blokey show. It irks me when you see names batted around and there's an overarching attitude of "we need to be sure to get someone in there who isn't a white straight male". To me as a viewer and fan that point in isolation isn't a priority, and I worry about the show changing for the worse. It's not like ghostbusters where I can simply ignore one top gear and watch another. If it happens organically, great. If it comes as a decision based on company policy, it's a fraud and I hope it fails. I feel a lot more passionately about doctor who than TG, which will be hard to mess up. With Top Gear, if one of the new presenters ends up being a woman, and as with Jodie Kidd, it's because they're into cars, fair enough. If it smells of them getting the spot in order to try some social engineering/demographics bollocks, I'd be against it. MattD1zzl3 posted:If it happens organically, great. I am sure I read somewhere that the BBC was keen to get a female presenter in there, since women couldn't relate to the programme if it were all men. Which, if you think about, is vastly more offensive than anything Jezza has said in his whole career. What the new team need to have is a genuine rapport - where you believe that they are real friends and enjoy knocking stuff off each other. And I am struggling to think of any duo/trio where I believe that is true. David Mitchell and Lee Mack, perhaps?

Anyway, my butt remains entirely unhurt.
