About 40 hours in now immediatly after 100 hours of Witcher 2.

I'm going to be completely honest here and say I think Witcher 2 did a better job at making preparations for battle / alchemy feel more satisfying.
I miss crafting traps and using them to carpet the floor before big fights :(

Not sure what the added benefit from the Xbow is apart from the cool look it gives me dangling on my back. I have some special ammo crafted on a decent bow and its doing about a third of a normal sword swing.
Am I missing something?

While I I'm impressed about the large open world of W3 and the tons upon tons of content you can find laying throughout I still think W2 had more charm packed in the smaller acts.
W3 has so many generic NPC's that after a while I stoped caring about interacting with them.

All in all I think W2 did a better job at being a atmospheric storytelling game. W3 is a bit too sandboxy for my tastes.

I goddamn lost it at "Radovid sucks flaccid cock" though.

Personally I think Geralt should be more about preparation and not chugging potions mid-combat so I agree with you there. The crossbow was useless to me except underwater but I didn't dump any points into xbow.

Although the villages around Velen and Skellige can get a bit samey, Novigrad is pretty darn special and White Orchard, Kaer Morhen and even Oxenfurt are pretty nice. I'm not sure where you are in the plot at 40 hours but the main story really kicks it up a notch in the second act and there's some really solid entertainment coming up.

Ha, the final fighter in the Novigrad fight club quest is a guy named Durden who is a tailor. Y'know, Tailor Durden. Perhaps a bit obvious for my taste but this is the same game that had Geralt literally say "Zed's dead" at one point earlier on so y'know what it's not like there isn't precedent for it.

edit: Well he's not literally a tailor, which you can call him out on. In fact it's kind of an ill-fitting nickname.

While the preparations and meditation work perfectly fine in the novels, I don't think it works so well in a game, especially one that's supposed to be more sand-boxy and exploration-based, like Witcher 3.

Sure, the Witcher contracts tell you beforehand what you're going to fight so you can make the necessary preparations, but it doesn't help when you're exploring a random cave with no idea what's going to be in it.

And yes, I do agree that Witcher 2 makes preparing your potions and gearing up for a fight more satisfying, especially in the harder difficulties, but doing the same in Witcher 3 will just interrupt the flow of the game, IMO.

That said, I do miss the traps.

I managed to finish the game also. The Act 3 and perhaps even 2 went very quickly compared to the first. My ending went pretty much exactly as I wanted:

- Ciri as empress. I thought it was the right choice for her, since Geralt was all about letting her choose. And she said it herself, as an empress she can do far more good than as a witcher.
- Geralt retires with Yennefer. I haven't played the previous games so I can't comment on that, but based on this game, I'd say I much prefer Yen to Triss and she didn't come off to me as horrible as others say. Sure she can be annoying and stubborn but hey those are very human qualities. I don't have anything against Triss either, but it seemed to me that this was a more "natural" choice to make.
- Radovid dead, Nilfgaard rules, Temeria as a vassal state. Really, Dijkstra thought I'd turn against Roche, Ves and Thaler? That was one desperate play.

Many hours put in the game, perhaps a bit worn out by now, but I'll still look forward to the next big expansion DLC that adds a new area.

Biggest gripes:

- Itemization was kind of bad, since crafted gear was so much better than everything else. Like many others I felt really bad taking some characters' fabled ancestral swords and selling them to a merchant since my own sword was heaps better.
- Finding the right decoction you want to use was all kinds of annoying. Potion/item menu could use a tweak.

I have found my potion/decoction usage got better when I just sold all my food items and other usable garbage. Food is fine early game but later on it's just clutter. This may be different for those of you playing on higher difficulties where you can't regen health but that just tells me I made the right decision playing on normal. Inventory and itemization could use a ton of work. They are a real low spot for an otherwise stellar game. Even with those issues it's easily the most fun gaming experience I've had in ages.

Troll decoction regenerates 20 hp/s even in combat, never really needed food after I got it, a swallow potion adds 80 hp/s when in a pinch. Others help with healing but need some involvement, like hurting enemies or spending stamina.

I end up popping Superior Thunderbolt, the decoction that increases critcal chance (can't remember name), the one that increases attack power with each successive hit until you are hit (Archgriffin?) and if need be, Superior Oriole potion (poison heals) and I've been unstoppable on normal. The tox-limit increase talent is so good.

I pretty much started using Swallow for most of my healing once I realized that it only took one unit of Alcohest or Dwarven Spirit to refill all of my potions when I meditate, not one unit per dose. Potions are cheap as free once you craft them. I almost never use food for healing anymore, and I'm on Death March. It helps that I'm running an alchemy build, so I also recover 25% vitality right off the bat whenever I drink any potion.

Superior Thunderbolt can be completely ridiculous with its 100% crit chance during storms. Geralt just turns into a blender that annihilates anything it touches, especially if you have the +critical damage talents slotted. You can't imagine how :getin: I was when I realised that the Wild Hunt generally causes a storm wherever it pops up.

Yes, there are a few that are just rabid and will attack on sight, especially on Skellige. One of them is usually on the northernmost island at the beginning of that Warrior Trail.

Yes, in fact, before that quest that same cave is inhabited by a hostile troll and bunch of nekkers. Skellige has a cave with a trio of hostile and flatulent trolls.

I think the inventory system is worse than Witcher 2 - at least there I could sort things by name, weight, price and amount in an descending/ascending order and here it's just a giant pile sorted by type. Also how they managed to make those 'new item' stars practically invisible and not helpful in any way is beyond me.

As long as the quest is green, it's fine. Do whatever you like. Savor that underleveledness because believe me, it will pass soon.
