Anyone here have any experience grappling in those funny one piece lycra fullbody suits? Are they durable at all? I remember a dude here doing a competition in a redman.

I don't think that guy posted here AFAIK but I think it would be hard to breathe. Also if you're wearing that you better be the poo poo.

Yeah, I remember a dude was definitely competing with a whole redsuit and was posting here, it might've been a euro goon.

Edit, i'm also looking for a pretty funny rashguard that seemed like it was a fullbody muscle print. It was kind of grotesque but looked quite nifty.

BJJ Hacks is killing it with their videos these days. I'm also excited that they are helping our teammates Eddie and Garry get more exposure.

Speaking of your teammates, one of them (Bruno Tostes) is going against one of my coaches (Dan Martinez) in the 1st round of Grapplers Quest today.

Bruno has been busy with his academy upstate so I haven't seen him in years. Eddie, Garry, Gordon as well as other Renzo/Renzo affiliate guys are also going to be in the pro ranks.

Looks like Dan is in the finals! Pretty stoked for him, he's a young guy and just got his brown belt about a month ago.

e: lost in the finals to Gordon Ryan

Almost a clean sweep for Renzo Gracie and affiliates, Eddie, Garry, Gordon and Amanda all won. Not sure who won the lightest mens division.

And the mercy seat is awaiting,
And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth,
And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.

quote:

A former Australian jiu-jitsu champion has saved a tourist from being robbed on a Sydney street after wrestling with the alleged assailant for 15 minutes while flesh was allegedly bitten out of his arm and capsicum spray was shot in his eyes.

Thiago Braga, 32, was driving on Harris Street, Pyrmont, on Saturday morning when he came across a distressed tourist, yelling in pain, rubbing his eyes and clutching for his stolen baThe 23-year-old Indonesian man had allegedly been capsicum sprayed by another man while out for a morning walk.

Seeing the victim's distress, Mr Braga pulled over in his car, ran to the closest convenience store and grabbed some water to flush out the man's eyes.

Unfortunately for the man who had allegedly stolen the bag, Mr Braga also found him.

Anthony Rider, 39, from Marrickville, was allegedly rummaging through the victim's bag on Harris Street when Mr Braga, originally from Brazil, pounced.

He threw himself at the man, giving chase and tackling him in Ada Place before pulling him into a jiu-jitsu grapple.

Mr Ryder allegedly sank his teeth into Mr Braga's arm, ripped out a piece of flesh and squirted capsicum spray in his eyes.

Despite searing pain, Mr Braga continued to hold the man on the bitumen of the Pyrmont laneway.

"I couldn't see or breathe, I was just trying to contain him," Mr Braga said.

The pair wrestled for more than 15 minutes before police arrived.

Jiu-jitsu is a martial art especially suited to wrestling; it is defined as the art of grappling on the ground.

"I was really worried about not hurting him too much," he said. "I didn't want to become the aggressor. After 17 years of training, I'm just lucky I have the skills to be able to control people in those situations".

The alleged victim of the theft who did not want to be identified is understood to be relieved to have his bag, containing his passport and wallet, returned to him.

Mr Braga is keen to get straight back to training his students in his Legacy Jiu-Jitsu programs in gyms across Sydney after spending the day getting treatment for his injuries.

Mr Ryder was charged with robbery while armed with a dangerous weapon, use of an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He faced Paramatta Bail court on Sunday morning and appeared via video link nursing a bandage to his face.

He did not apply for bail and it was formerly refused. He is due to face Central Local Court on Thursday.

Well, that happened.

A good online beginner resource that was recommended to me when I first began was Stephan Kesting's road map book on his website http://www.grapplearts.com/ . It does a good job of outlining simple and basic concepts. But yeah, it won't replace showing up to class and paying attention to what's being taught.

"You don't understand his pain. Everywhere he goes he sees women working, wearing pants, speaking in gatherings, voting. Surely they will burn in the white hot flames of Hell"
get a copy of jiu-jitsu university by saulo ribiero. Its one of the few books I would recommend from day 1 because he lays out really universal concepts and techniques.

I think it is helpful being able to see pictures and words to supplement class. I learned faster that way with a basic bjj book (i wont bother referencing it, saulo's is better).

Just don't go off the rails with highly specific or individualized material. Not because its bad its just you probably have limited time and learning very basic things will be a better use than going too deep down the rabbit hole too early. If you have like 9 hours a day to train and study bjj then whatever go nuts.

Also and obvious, be careful whos material you're consuming. There have been several popular resources that are not so good in general, and even guys who are good at one thing can really suck at another. For example, dudes can do a perfectly good triangle tutorial and then teach a really lovely double leg in the very next clip.

Buy this book Xquard86 is recommending, it's great. The pictures and breakdowns in it are awesome and you can go back after class and look at what moves you drilled to help you remember them.
