MORAL:
To the vector belong the spoils.
So there's totally old school softcore porn on Netflix, now. And not even the 'important' kind, just run of the mill junk that never got famous. This one called Blue Summer from 1973 is telling that, before the misogynistic feminine archetypes are introduced, I was straight up thinking it was going to be a gay porn. It's interesting to see this much sexism paired up with such overt and comfortable homoeroticism. There's an orgy at one point where these two college freshmen played by thirty-year-olds do it with two other women in an open field, and at one point they all kiss together. At one point one of the female performers bites one of the male performers on the rear end and then kisses him. This is all being watched by some perverted old hippie cult con artist playing a flute.

Snowpiercer seems like it would be a good name for a strapon, doens't it?

Four Lions is amazing, by the way. I can't think of a movie concept that would have been easier to screw up but they managed to pull it off almost perfectly.

Nightcrawler feels like one of the more authentic portrayals of a psychopath I've ever seen. He's not some over-the-top bloodthirsty maniac, just an otherwise regular person with a little ambition and no empathy or compunction. I think that's why it's so chilling and so effective at making us uncomfortable.

I wish.

If I were not a stupid, lazy man I would totally make a video of that strapon from episode one falling & spattering in slomo with the the Chariots of Fire theme playing. Every single one of the presumably millions of Netflix Funbucks that was spent on that show was worth it, because of that soupy strapon. Whenever I'm in a meeting or on the subway and start to feel down, that strapon flops wetly into my brain and I'm suddenly filled with joy & think "Oh tee hee. Oh life is beautiful. Oh tee hee."

I guess people are probably tired of Nightcrawler at this point but GODDAMN, what a character. Gyllenhaal has created a character here that is absolutely mindblowing, if he ever tops this I'd be shocked. I'm sure everyone comes to their own realizations about Bloom at slightly different points in the film, but the way it allows the true nature of his character to slowly dawn on you is absolute genius. He's just so off-putting and weird, its easy to forget that he likely murdered, or at least severely beat that security guard in the first scene.

I loved the way he explains his career philosophy to Russo's character, and you can imagine that its absolutely the truth, just in the most twisted way possible. He's examined himself, identified his strengths and weaknesses, and is running with it. It just so happens that his weakness is his general hatred of other people, and his greatest strength is his absolute lack of any morality whatsoever. So he's using his strengths to work around his weakness just like his internet research told him to do! When he actually admits to Rick that he hates people, I was scared as if I was watching an effective horror movie.

Its absolutely criminal that Gyllenhaal didn't even get an Oscar nomination for this, there's no better performance out there this year, I just don't get it.

I'm almost sold on watching Enemy. The premise sounds really interesting, but the reviews seem tepid. Anyone interested in maybe talking it up some more for me (not sarcasm)?

Edit: I was really trying to not talk too much more about the film, mostly because I was worried that if we hype it too much, we might get a knee-jerk reaction in the other direction (which is why I chose to make it optional to read it--sorry if it's a misuse of the spoiler thing) but... I'm not sure why I'm just now noticing this, but Riz Ahmed played both Rick in Nightcrawler as well as Omar in Four Lions, both of which I suggested last night. Before watching Nightcrawler last night, Four Lions was the only other film with him in it that I'd seen, and I'd watched it just the night before. I kept thinking during Nightcrawler, "I know that face, man. Why do I know that face?" Didn't make the connection until just now when going through some trivia/reviews/etc. of the film.

Enemy is slow-paced, really thoughtful, and doesn't ever explain any of its premise. As such, it'll get bad reviews, especially user reviews on Amazon. But, it's super good, really moody, and has an extremely oppressive atmosphere that adds to the whole thing. Definitely watch it, especially if you like other low exposition surreal stuff like Upstream Color.

The ending of Enemy is worth the price of admission alone, but its a great movie regardless, and it's a tight 90 minutes so there's no filler.

Nightcrawler is absolutely incredible. It was the most chilling and scary movie I've seen a long while, and it isn't even a horror film. Gyllenhaal is fantastic in it. The guy easily could have become a leading man actor in big blockbusters, but instead he goes for these juicy roles in smaller films, and I absolutely love him for it. The movie, along with Birdman and Blue Ruin made 2014 one of my absolute favorite years for movies.

I like the above post referring to it as "low exposition surreal stuff," although it is not nearly as in-your-face disorienting and complex as Upstream Color. As I recall, the film strikes a strange tone where, aside from a fantastical premise, it is played largely straight (with occasional, but abrupt and jarring, surreal touches, ESPECIALLY the ending). In terms of acting, I watched it the same night I saw Nightcrawler and it contributed to my immediate spike in Jake Gyllenhal appreciation. As for direction, I greatly preferred it to Prisoners, which was well acted and atmospheric, but ultimately seemed like a somewhat hollow thriller with too many twists. Enemy was a movie where I left with the desire to watch again to unravel it a bit a more.

(And it's only 90 minutes.)

Frankly, as I stated in a previous post, I'm concerned that if we talk about how good Nightcrawler is too much, it could come off as over-hyping. This is one of those corners of the Internet where I worry that it could cause a knee-jerk reaction where it just gets written off as BS circle-jerking. Also I don't want to subtract from the actual topic of the thread too much with posts that are likely more fit for a thread on the film itself. That's just my take on it, though.

Consider me sold on watching Enemy sometime tonight, probably.

It is the top-grossing release of Focus Features, ranks fifth among the highest-grossing westerns (since 1979) and eighth among the highest-grossing romantic dramas (1980 – present).

But I get your point. I need to rewatch Birdman, there was a room full of people when I saw it and couldn't pay much attention.

Also, I would argue that Nightcrawler is absolutely a horror film.

I should rephrase it. Instead of going for big roles in safe movies that will make a lot of money and not require a huge amount of range as an actor, which he could definitely get with how big his name is, he's going for smaller, more difficult roles like his one in Nightcrawler.

Well, at least that's how it'd seem, recently. In the last few years his choices of roles have really gotten more consistently solid.

With that in mind--while it no longer seems to be up on any streaming services that I have, I was wondering how you guys felt about End of Watch. There is a Nightcrawler thread, I just found it a few pages in. I'll repost my opinion there and see if it starts to get a little more active now that the movie is on Netflix.

End of Watch is decent, nothing amazing but Gyllenhaal is of course good in it and his relationship with his partner feels very genuine. Its also fairly unique as a found-footage movie that isn't horror(some of the scenes feel like a horror movie though).

I'll echo the sentiment on Troll 2. Some of the best films are notoriously terrible. Additionally, some Lowtax guy appears on the Rifftrax for that film, which are also fantastic, but I 'spose that's a matter best fit for the Rifftrax discussion thread.

I went to Netflix to try finding another title that I suggest, but then discovered that Metastasis is streaming, now, and I got distracted. I know it won't be the same show I fell in love with (in fact, I expect it to be at least sorta crappy by comparison), but I've been curious for so long, now. Plus the guy playing José is a close friend's cousin, so I can fall back on that excuse.

Yeah, that's more or less what I've heard, too. Plus I've heard some complaints/questioning regarding how it's supposed to be a found footage ordeal framed by one of the cops being in a filmmaking class or something (I think?), which sort of fails to explain the footage the criminals were taking. Of course, I repeat, I haven't seen it and could be talk entirely out of my rear end. Sorta going by what the Internet as a whole says about it, which tends to be a bad approach.

If you're willing to stray from western cinema there's a ton more in that genre like "The Killer" mentioned, which everyone should see.

A Company Man, New World and a few others I can't think of just this second are also good in that vein.

Naw, I think it's like 100% certain he cut the guys brakes. That's why he wanted to go to a van crash rather than the other crime. I'd also guess he didn't murder the security guard for a watch.
