I am finding it very difficult to move quickly and precisely using the W,A,S, and D keys. Maybe I just need to get the hang of it, but I think that this might be an imperfect control method.

You should pick up a wired 360 controller for platformers and 3rd person action games and use mouse/keyboard with FPS's and RTS's. I was primarily a console gamer too and that's how I like to do things.

Kb/M sacrifices precision in movement for greater precision in aiming. Gamepad controls on the other hand offer more precise movement at the expense of aiming and camera control. I think being able to drop Russians in a split second is a higher priority than smooth avatar movement.
