It's probably something else setting it off or you believing you have it because of one bad experience. If all foods high in glutamates (Parmesan cheese, soy sauce, mushrooms, etc.) set off the reaction, it could well be legitimate, just like people with Celiac disease (and maybe some people with non-Celiac gluten intolerance, the jury's out) have a legitimate problem with gluten. If somebody can chow down on walnuts and Roquefort no problem, though, it's not the MSG in the Chinese food that's causing their headache.

Because, you know, if they were REALLY allergic to it, they would probably die, as glutamic acid is an important neurotransmitter for neural activation. I figure that is pretty much like saying "My car is allergic to gasoline, so I fill the tank with filtered water."

Also, don't forget to notify the leading neurology journals that they've been publishing bad science. People with chronic neurological issues (including migraine and epilepsy) can indeed be sensitive to glutamate levels. Not monosodium glutamate in particular, but glutamates in general. Hence my docs telling me to avoid foods known to be high in glutamates (aged cheese, mushrooms, yeast, lots of other yummy things), because you can get enough glutaminic acid from other foods over the course of a day. Edited to add: This is a pretty good summary of some recent research connecting migraine to poor regulation of glutamate levels in the brain. Edited again to add: Now I want pasta with walnut-Gorgonzola sauce. AlbieQuirky has a new favorite as of 05:13 on Jun 14, 2015 |

I figure that is pretty much like saying "My car is allergic to gasoline, so I fill the tank with filtered water." Well, there is some thought that excess dietary glutamate may exacerbate seizures in people with epilepsy. It's obviously not as simple as "eat a hunk of parmesan, have a seizure" but in the same way that some people with epilepsy have to avoid caffeine, it's possible that some should also avoid high-glutamate foods. A sensitivity isn't the same thing as an allergy - there are lots of instances in which someone might have a legitimate sensitivity to a substance that's normal or even essential in the human body. Of course there's lots of nonsense around dietary restrictions etc (I say this as a person with legitimate, doctor-diagnosed, I-had-an-intestinal-biopsy Celiac disease) but that doesn't mean that 100% of people claiming a sensitivity to a fad "dietary trigger" are full of poo poo.

Again, its one of those fad "illnesses" that 99.9% of the people claiming it are full of poo poo. Yes, there are some people with an actual medically certified gluten intolerance, but everyone else just demands gluten free foods because its a hip thing to say. The human body poorly regulating glutamates is something that can be measured and diagnosed, and I would wager that the first rumors of Chinese Restaurant Syndrome were probably connected to people with hosed up glutamate levels but were people who'd get regular migraines anyways and didn't connect the dots until it repeatedly happened after eating Chinese food.

I had one of these last night: Dominos Australia's new Pulled Beef pizzas. This was the Spicy Harissa variant. It tasted ok, better then their normal chili beef or meat lovers honestly, though my local store put about 1/4th of the beef on one slice out of six; also it was about two bucks more then the normal range for roughly the same amount of pizza. Made for a nice slice but 2 had barely any. 12 hours later. My stomach is making gurgling sounds and hurting a bit thus I am waiting patiently for the bathroom to be free. About the same as a normal Domino's chili beef pizza. Verdict: 7 Pizza 's out of 10 Pizza 's Aftermath Verdict: About the same.

I usually try to eat fairly healthy (or rather, I guess I usually eat generally unhealthy food, but limit my intake), but yesterday I ended up eating a days worth of food by noon, so I just said gently caress it and went all out. For dinner I made a triple decker quesadilla. It went like this: tortilla ----------- mozzarella/jalapeno pepperoni ----------- tortilla ----------- mozzarella/jalapeno pepperoni ---------- tortilla ----------- mozzarella/jalapeno pepperoni ----------- tortilla This was the only picture I took. It was delicious, but shameful.

Bacon's a little underdone, otherwise looks pretty good. Is that cheddar inside the hod dog itself, or spray cheese?

This looks like it would have a 75% chance to shut down your entire vascular system on the first bite, but that's a risk I'd be willing to take. Is that a grilled cheese sandwich for bun ?

Oh hell, I missed that the bun was a grilled cheese somehow. I think that might push it to the 'only once" category for me.

We got in these new espresso makers at work, and the company we ordered from decided to put a lot of aggressively Italian stuff on the back of the boxes. This is apparently risotto. We thought it looked like two different kinds of puke topped with baby poo poo.
