Doesn't help that Bandai is now run by crazy people (see their Gundam policy where you can't just license one show, you have to license them all.)

NANI?

Bandai has always been bugfuck insane when it came to Gundam in the west. Remember when they decided that the best way to cash in on the popularity of Wing was to start releasing Gundam stuff from the beginning and that its fans would just love a dub only release of a show from the late 70's?

Dead weight, just like this post.

To say nothing of their video game release schedule, don't know how it is in Japan but at least here in the West it seems like they leave their Tales games releases up to a coin flip or maybe even a dart toss depending on how they are feeling that day.

IIRC the dub only release was to try and keep people from reverse importing it since the DVDs were cheaper in America.

Ugh, what a ridiculously bad decision. Gundam as a property has a solid 6-12 separate universes or series that vary in tone and quality. Why on earth would you put such a big price tag on it to the point that basically no one would be willing to pay for it, particularly to air it on T.V.? That's a bad business decision costing them literally tens of millions of dollars for no goddamn reason. Do they just not like money? I'm sure they still get dubbed, so the works already done, but god forbid people see your product. And it even promotes their brand, they're turning down a small fortune that involves them being paid to advertise themselves to a potential audience of a million+ people every week!

I honestly can't remember a business decision that bad, no wonder Gundam isn't airing on anything anywhere.

On the Reboot front, while of course I'd prefer it just continue the old story and characters I can see why they don't see it as a practical move, and with how technology has changed it doesn't really make sense to stay in that setting. I'll remain cautiously optimistic, but I admit there's a very real chance that it'll just be around for one season and not capture the magic of the first series.

Hey so, how does Toonami choose its shows again? Anyone in particular they don't deal with?

Jason, Gill, and Kim Manning (head of AS programming) are usually approached by distributors with a list of shows they'd like to offer. Sometimes it's the other way around if it's a title they really want (see: Attack on Titan). They see if they like the show, how much it costs them, if there's room on the schedule, plus other factors, and if everything works out they acquire the show. Most shows are acquired on an episode-by-episode basis, where they pay the licensor/distributor a fee for every time they run an episode of the show. A small handful of shows, such as Attack on Titan, are acquired on a time-based deal where they can air the show as much as they want for X years. Some distributors are more generous than others, and how nice they want to be to Toonami is their business. Every deal is different and can have its own unique perks and restrictions.

JT Jag posted:

Toonami has the cushiest relationship with Funimation, followed up by Aniplex. After them, they often have a show or two from Viz. A few companies that Adult Swim has tended to shut out are Media Blasters, the now-defunct Geneon and Sentai, though that's changing with the addition of Agame no Kill. Toonami used to have a very good relationship with Bandai Entertainment during Toonami 1.0, but that changed at some point, and now Bandai Entertainment is dead. These two things may have a slight correlation.

Geneon had 5 (7?) shows on CN/AS in the past: Tenchi Muyo, Lupin III, Samurai Champloo, Trigun and Paranoia Agent. Media Blasters had Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit on the air and that was it. Other distributors they've worked with in the past include Tokyopop, ADV Films, Sony Pictures, Synch Point (just FLCL), DiC, Cloverway Inc, Manga Entertainment (one OAV) and The Right Stuf. Historically Bandai Entertainment has always been their most generous partner, and that continues to be partially true today with Space Dandy.

LAST NIGHT ON GREAT TEACHER ONIZUKA

Azusa couldn't deal with the high school girls she taught being enormous bitches to her so she went back to her hometown to remind herself of why she became a teacher. The school has long since been abandoned and is scheduled for demolition. Onizuka and Co. follow her to Hakuba to bring her back, but there is a girl at the school that treasures the piano in her old classroom. While trying to remove the piano from the school, Onizuka helps her and saves her from the explosion with only a piano key in tact, but the girl is happy that even just that remained. Then Onizuka got really superstitious to the point where he thought he was gonna die and was wrong. Then Vice Principal Uchiyamada thought Onizuka was trying to gently caress his daughter when in reality he just took her to a concert, it was a pretty filler heavy night.

Then comes a new member of the cast, Nao Kadena, the new school nurse. All of the boys and male staff immediately begin to fawn over her because she is insanely attractive. After a while she starts using her looks and charm to sell everyone worthless crap to make some extra money. Onizuka learns that she was once a famous street racer who is now trying to make all of this money for the sake of helping her brother get an operation for an accident she blames herself for. Onizuka races her in her signature match to teach her about self-worth and then her brothers find her and talks to her. She decides to stay at the school as the school nurse after losing her money from a con man.

Finally, after a string of bad gigs, Onizuka takes up the mantle of Tomoko's manager as a bet with her current manager. He sets her up for several innocuous local commercials, but this pays off as her popularity begins to rise. Eventually her commercials attract the attention of a popular magazine who asks she be in their beauty contest which promises the winner a lucrative career as an idol. Onizuka and Co. begin doing rather questionable things to help her win, but she ultimately loses out to someone who rigged the votes through being the employer of the vote counters and stacking votes in her opposition's favor. The audience readily rejects the actual winner as the majority of them actually did vote for Tomoko and she talks them down and congratulates the winner on her victory. She and the rest of the group head home and upon arrival see an ocean of people who cheer for her as she leaves.

Tonight continues the main story in a ton of ways and the main antagonist rears her head for good.

Depends - after you defeat the final boss of Contra does Lance Bean get sucked into a MYSTERIOUS TIME HOLE, forcing Bill Rizer to spend two whole levels (with no combat) looking for him?
