You know how Death is always Drac's second in command? It's kind of weird since Death is supposed to be, well, death, he should be the baddest of them all. By the fact that Drac can die it would seem Death shouldn't be working for him. But there he is, guarding the clock tower. Hell, even Shaft seems to be higher up the hierarchy some times. But it's frigging death. My point is, Dracula should be second in command to Bloodstained's villain. vvvvv Interesting, I never picked up on that. That's cool. VVVVV Never played Lament of Innocence either. I should look for it at the pawn shop, I still have my PS2 hooked up. Perry Normal fucked around with this message at 04:52 on Jun 14, 2015 |

That's a translation thing. In Japanese, he isn't THE[i] Death, he's [i]A Death.

According to Lament of Innocence, he who holds the Crimson Orb holds control of Death. Death will also grant him what essentially comes to Eternal Life with that, which is why he revives every 100 years after his last death. Death seems to like having Dracula as his master too, so it works out.

Look, Death and Dracula are tight, they've done so much poo poo together over the centuries, you wouldn't get that kind of deep frienship. Can you just picture Dracula and Death boring young Alucard to death by showing him the sldies from that vacation they took to Austria years ago? They were so drunk, ahaha.

Also great because "A Death and Dracula joint attack? That was never mentioned in any book I've read!" is the most ridiculous/amazing anime line in the game, up there with "I'll kill you AND the night!" from Lament of Innocence.

To put it in a bit more detail, the Japanese name for Death is "死神" or "Shinigami" (which you'll recognize if you ever watched/read Death Note) which means "Death God" or god of death, or whatever. Shinigami are a type of creature as opposed to a single entity, like the western idea of a demon or angel. Of course some of the Castlevania games simply call him "Death" as we do in English, so he may very well be intended to be THE Death (sorry hatred guy) or at least the Grim Reaper. As far as I know in the Sorrow games Dracula most certainly isn't in control of the Crimson Orb, but Death still works to revive him. There's something almost sweet about it, in a way. ....Now I'm sad that the Reaper didn't win. Genocyber posted:I still think the best moment in the series is the Dracula and Death teamup in PoR. Yeah, i've always just seen it as Death and Dracula being homies at best, and at worst Drac and his feud with vampire hunters is probably good entertainment. Like, if you're evil and immortal, but you're smart and not comically evil or a jerk, there's not many people to hang out with.

They don't really go into the Crimson Orb at all after Lament of Innocence. I always thought of it as some kind of callback to the orbs in Castlevania 1 that Simon would pick up as he beat bosses, but that's just because they were... red orbs. Most of the poo poo after that is just speculation. Theories I'd read did suggest that Death fights Soma in the Sorrows games in order to bring back Dracula. Death doesn't talk in those games, so there's not really any guidance or truth to anything, just speculation, again. Ultimately, it comes down to Death just being an extremely loyal servant to Dracula, and that's cool enough for me. I would love to pick Iga's brain about this stuff though, since he's so passionate about it. It's very unfortunate that he wouldn't divulge more information about what the 1999 game would be like.

Yeah, but that was after, and death probably sees a bunch of mortals coming in with a corded up piece of leather over and over and is like 'you'll be dead in x years, i'll just bring him back when you're not lol'. They never said he had to be smart about it.

The way the plot is phrased in the PSP SotN translation, it makes it sound like Dracula is constantly beset by powerful vampire hunters, though ones that are still weak enough to defeat. I like to think Death is the one stocking Dracula's castle with all these exotic, long dead monsters in exchange for the souls of the people who fail making it through the castle.

It's there in CV1, I think CV3, SotN... It doesn't really make sense for it to be the red orbs you pick up after the bosses die, since in LoI it will straight up turn you into a vampire. Ain't no Belmont turning into a vampire.

Yeah, that's fair. I didn't even think about the Dracula character designs having a red gem on him somewhere, even though it's a painfully obvious character design now that I think about it. His necklace in CV1 is always the first thing I notice before his head appears.

Man, Gergoth in DoS always gets me, all of its attacks are super telegraphed but it's the first (only?) boss in the game where you can't afford to take more than two or three hits. One if it hits you with the stone gas attack.

It really doesn't help that Gergoth's room is so tiny. If you're willing to grind a soul to level 9, I'd recommend getting the Fleaman soul so you can just throw those guys out and do some free damage while you focus on not getting hit by anything. My strategy when I played DoS last month was basically throw as many fleamen as I could, dodge attacks by staying as far away from him as possible and reacting and getting as much free damage as I could during the descent to the bottom. You can hit the gas clouds away from you but I find that too risky, so I just stay away. His laser's really annoying to dodge because it covers so much range that the only place that's safe is right on his toe, but even then you might accidentally get too close and touch him. If you're lucky, he'll do the laser from mid-room so you can just jump kick over him to the safe side. Similarly, OoE's Blackmore is wrecking my poo poo for very similar reasons: small space to fight, huge attacks with little room to dodge, hits like a train. I think I have phase 1 down, but phase 2 mixes things up too much for me to reliably handle.
