Time to take on the first Sea Quest.

The party I'll be using.

And my Limit setups.

Examining the water, you see the shadows of countless monsters encircling your ship! They must be behind the abnormal events threatening the trade city! Now, draw your weapons and follow the Wildling that charged into the swarm!

Not doing much just yet. Faye will switch over to support duties on the next turn.

Trying to have Cassandra take all the heat off of the others. Then I realized that was a horrible idea.

Because at this point I remembered that the Red Puffer's attacks were Ice type, and she can't do anything about those. Ice attacks are denoted by that snowflake shape.

Burns, doesn't it?

I really don't suggest blowing too much TP on this fight. It's not too hard.

Muscles atrophying...

Can't you keep that bull of yours under control!?

Hey, as long as that thing's not hitting us, that's fine with me.

Call Cow summons a Mad Cow to randomly attack all enemies on the initial cast and has a chance of inflicting Paralysis. What Paralysis does is anyone inflicted with it has a 50% chance of not being able to act for the current turn, and it completely disables any evasion for the duration of the ailment.

A bit painful, but I'll live.

I don't know what Bergman's stats are, but they're pretty big since his cow hits really hard. Even Bergman's physical attacks hit pretty hard

Paralysis going into effect here.

Turn them over, they're done on that side!

That's some thick skin.

Mmph. Pretty crunchy though. Thanks Asteria!

Beast Roar lowers the physical damage output of all enemies by a certain amount. Unfortunately, that only helps with the Sea Lobsters.

Primal Drums lowers all the enemies' physical defense by a certain amount. It's a very useful support skill.

At any rate, that fight wasn't too hard.

DS Version

Brace yourselves and confront the swarm of monsters’ new threat!

Keep your heads in the game, it's not over yet!

As long as that means more fish to eat, I'm all for it!

I wouldn't suggest eating the puffers though, blech!

DS Version

Not all Sea Quests have you face off against one strong boss enemy. Some of them have you fight multiple waves of regular enemies. In Sea Quests that have multiple waves, any supplies the NPCs used up are replenished.

Stay behind me, Rose!

AWOOOO!

This fight can be a significant difficulty spike over the first battle, because the enemies have much more damage, and the fight can take longer to finish. To speed things up, I had Rose use Wolf Howl since Bergman's cow/bull can inflict Paralysis.

Well that's not good.

Don't worry, you'll be alright.

Well done!

The fight mostly played out the same, although I was kept on my toes for a while.

DS Version

The Wildling shouts a war cry before running toward the fish. You must also muster your strength to join in the attack!

There's the big guy! Charge! :black101:

Sea God's Anger: Limit Skill. Requires a Cruel Roamer and a Sea Lobster. Uses the Head. An AOE Volt attack that deals 100% damage. Has an accuracy of 80.

The Cruel Roamer is the real boss of this Sea Quest.

Just standard opening tactics.

Huh. Maybe I'm not cut out for the whole bashing in heads thing.

Maybe you should focus on your healing capabilities. We have enough fighters, and your contributions in keeping us alive are very useful.

And this is why Bergman is a useful NPC. His Mad Cow deals a ton of damage and Paralysis can be a useful ailment.

CHARGING UUUUP!

I'm using Wolf Howl to capitalize on the Paralysis.

Pow pow pow!

Just look at all that damage.

It's already at half health.

:cawg: The poor thing is nearly helpless as I whittle away at it.

Something the Cruel Roamer can do is either summon 2 Sea Lobsters or 2 Red Puffers.

Really? Just as we were about to kill it? :argh:

If it summoned 2 Sea Lobsters, watch out. It'll try to use Sea God's Anger, which is a hard hitting Volt attack that can one shot most classes at this point.

Chances are that taking down one of the Sea Lobsters in one turn will be impossible for at this point, so your best bet to prevent Sea God's Anger is to inflict a disable of some sort on them.

Too easy!

Unfortunately, I have to kill the Sea Lobsters before this battle is considered finished. And Asteria is out of TP. :argh:

I wasted an extra 4 turns because of those jerks.

Watching it sink, the Wildling and his partner roar to the heavens as proof of their strength! You look around cautiously, but Batavia’s sea seems calm and clear. There are no signs of monsters... You wave toward the well-wishers who are reveling in the glory of victory before setting sail again.

DS Version

Thanks to you, the trade along the Batavia sea can flourish again, free of monsters. Eliminating hindrances to the ocean city’s restoration is an important duty for you. Keep it up! Also, this is a reward in honor of your praiseworthy deed. Take it as a sign of Batavia’s friendship.

We're awarded the Second Wind Limit for clearing a Batavia Sea Quest for the first time. It completely restores the user's HP at the end of the turn. Handy, but I prefer Indomitable since that can completely prevent death. Anyways, let's sell our loot. I went straight to doing Sea Quests after the last trip.

Poison forges aren't that great. The damage purely depends upon which weapon gets a Poison forge. The formula for the Poison ticks is (Weapon Power / 2) + a random # from 1 to 10. All getting more Poison forges does is increase the chances of the Poison landing. Use actual Poison skills if you want to make use of that ailment.

Anyways, back to Sea Quests.

The party I'll be taking along for this one.

And my Limits.

DS Version

Examining the water, you see the shadows of countless monsters encircling your ship! They must be behind the abnormal events threatening the trade city! Now, draw your weapons and fight for the peace of the port and the dreams of the couple!

Oh dear, looks like it's not dead. And it brought reinforcements.

Nothing a couple of holes through their heads can't fix, right?

I hope elephants can swim.

:black101:Video: Cruel Roamer:black101:

DS Version

I'm going to warn you that I cut out a lot of the fight here, so if you really want to see how it all went down, watch the video. Because this Sea Quest was a huge slog for me.

My basic plan for this wave is to conserve as much TP as possible.

As I was out fishing out in the vast sea.~

To me, way hey, blow the man down.~

Showing you this to say that yes, Singularity procs for physical attacks.

Not that it really helps Asteria.

Fishing is fun!

Berserker's Vow increases the users attack power, at the cost of taking away some of their HP.

Our poor stomachs were feeling a bit queasy.~

Fear not, here's a Medica!~

And here's the main problem with this Sea Quest. Agatha will waste all her TP using Rush, except that's better saved for the 2nd fight instead of this one. And neither her or Giles were packing any Amritas, so she doesn't really help much. Rush is a multi-target attack, it attacks random enemies, but it will never hit the same enemy twice.

I saw these blowfish that were ripe for stabbing.~

Giles used Lullaby, except the Sea Lobsters weren't the main threat here.

Roast them, then flip them on the grill!~

I'll spare you several turns of agony. It was just everyone plinking away at the Sea Lobsters because I wanted Asteria to save her TP for the 2nd wave. And now Agatha is out of TP. Right before the wave where Break really would have come in handy.

DS Version

But you get no chance to catch your breath, as a second wave of enemies surges forward to take their place!

DS Version

Now that the enemies can dish out more damage, I want to mitigate it.

Defensive formation!

Guard Tactic increases the party's defense by 25% against all types of damage, including Almight, for 6 turns.

These lobsters and blowfish are big fat meanies...~

Avenger kicking in.

Fang please, wake up and fight!~

Seriously, this Sea Quest sucks.

DS Version

Your party and the couple say a few quick, encouraging words before you muster your strength and attack!

If we take down this fish, Batavia will be free!

Aww, you stopped singing. :(

No time for that, we gotta focus!

DS Version

This is why I was being so conservative with TP. As agonizing at it is to slog through the first two waves, if I don't save up enough, I can't win this fight.

Well that's a thick skull.

Yeah, Buccaneers aren't really too good in the early-game. Still, this is the only damage skill he's got so far, so I might as well squeeze out every last bit of damage I can.

You may have noticed that my damage output is low.

Way to go butterfly!

Heh, a butterfly is the last thing I would consider deadly. I've learned something new.

You know it's funny. I've researched other Labyrinths and...

This is because Poison is my main way of dealing damage in this fight.

One of the leading causes of death? Seriously!?

Yep. I didn't believe it myself, until I saw them in action. Good thing he's tamed one. I'd hate to fight against those.

Good thing the Poison landed before he summoned those.

I should not that unlike the first two games, Poison damage isn't taken all at once and causes a super loud noise to blare through the speakers.

Oh, so elephants can swim!

I was saving Call Elephant for the Cruel Roamer's minions. Now they can't cast Sea God's Anger.

Whenever you foil a Limit from being cast, either by killing one of the enemies participating in it, or incapacitating them, that message pops up.

Aw, you did your best!

And I never have to do this Sea Quest again.

DS Version

DS Version

You look around cautiously, but Batavia’s sea seems calm and clear. There are no signs of monsters... The couple thanks you with beaming smiles, but their true battle is just beginning. You bid good luck to the couple before setting a course back to the ocean city’s port.

DS Version

Trust and support are truly powerful weapons... Of course, the same might be said about you. By the way, that couple asked me to give you this. They said it might help you out on your adventures.

His last line changes to this if you already have Giles's Hoe:

Well done, everyone. Keep it up, in the name of the ocean city’s restoration.

Alice has now gained POWER and I'll probably put her on the front lines. For the rest of the 1st Stratum anyway. Now it's time for the 3rd Sea Quest.

My setup for these fights.

DS Version

Examining the water, you see the shadows of countless monsters encircling your ship! If you defeat these monsters, the children will formally be free to do as they wish. You offer the children some encouraging words before charging vehemently toward the monsters!

Don't worry kids, if we work together, we can easily take down these fish!

Didn't we do this already?

It's a thing that happens.

:rip:DUNKAGE: Cruel Roamer:rip:

If you only want to watch one of the Sea Quest videos, watch this one. These fights get dunked on pretty hard.

Remember what I said about the AI cheating? Normally the NPCs here use Fire attacks, but if they detect anyone in your party using a Ice or a Volt attack, they'll use those elemental attacks instead.

Hey, nice follow-up!

Here's a Chaser in action. Anytime anyone uses the element the Chaser wants to follow up on, the Chaser will deal damage to everything that got hit with it. Well, there is a catch to this. Chasers can't follow-up all attacks. After the first Chaser procs, the second Chaser only has a 78% chance to proc, since Ace's Chasers are at level 7. Each time a Chaser procs, the chance for another to activate gets reduced by 22% at level 7. So the 3rd only has a 56% chance to follow-up an attack, the 4th a 36%, and so on. Basically, they're really not a reliable form of damage. And you also have to build a team around these, which is another point against them. Still if you can make a Chaser party work, it can work well in some cases.

What you are witnessing: ALL THE DAMAGE! :supaburn: The NPCs have an excellent offense, so bringing in supports or more ammo for Ace's Chasers is what you want to do here.

Seriously, they have so much AOE.

Look at that turn count. A 2 turn kill! Compare that to the last two Sea Quests.

DS Version

The children look exhausted, but you inspire them to go on as you turn to face the new threat!

You guys were amazing! You've totally got this, just don't give up!

DS Version

If you're thinking that this fight is gonna be more difficult...

CHAAAARGE! :black101:

Did they even need our help? :stare:

I'm wondering about that too. :stonk:

You are dead wrong.

DS Version

Suddenly, the children give a spirited cry and valiantly charge toward the fish!

DS Version

First things first, healing up.

Unlike the first two waves, the children won't use their AOEs. Yet.

And here's another problem with Wildlings. If their beasts' attacks miss, they won't inflict the ailment at all. :argh: At any rate, nothing interesting happens until the 5th turn.

The Cruel Roamer won't always summon Sea Lobsters. Sometimes it'll summon Red Puffers instead. It can't use Sea God's Anger with Red Puffers, but those things are already dangerous on their own.

Finally! Just in time, I was about to switch over to Call Elephant.

Now the NPCs will start using their AOEs.

...What was even the point of us coming along?

My friends helped... I think.

There's nothing to say here. The dunks speak for themselves.

DS Version

DS Version

You look around cautiously, but Batavia’s sea seems calm and clear. There are no signs of monsters...

No mistaking it. That thing's dead for good. Come on Fang, help me haul this thing back. We're having fish fillet for breakfast!

At that moment, the children sink to the ground like jelly and laugh exhaustedly. The children are truly free to do as they wish now, but this is also the beginning of their hardships. The young adventurers have finished their first quest and you set a course back to port.

DS Version

Sounds like you guys are role models now. You better think twice before you make any mistakes! Haha. Oh yeah, those kids left a gift for you here. It must be their way of saying thanks. Please take it.

If you already have the reward, his last line changes to this instead:

But all that aside, you’ve done a remarkable job this time. Keep up the hard work.

A pretty huge upgrade for Sidney. Anyways, two people just got level ups.

Refresh is now cheaper.

You should get out of here! It's really dangerous now!

Dismiss Beast gets rid of the summoned beast, but it restores the Wildling's TP by how much it cost to summon that animal. But Dismiss Beast itself costs TP, so you won't get all your TP back. Leveling this up just lowers the TP cost. It's up to you if you want to max this out or not, but I'll say this, the Wildling's TP pool gets pretty huge later on.

The Atrocious Fang unlocks this piece of equipment. Which we can't get yet until we kill a specific enemy on the 4th floor. Anyways, I know that I didn't get the equipment reward from the first Sea Quest, so let's go do that.

:toot:

The Wildling seems to have saved not only Batavia’s port, but his comrades’ pride as well. He must’ve been very happy. He was grinning from ear to ear when he told me to give this to you.

Last line changes to this if you have the spear.

Well done, everyone. Keep it up, for the restoration of the ocean city!

The spear increases how fast the Limit Gauge charges up for Fang, but it deals less damage than his current spear, and I don't really care about Limits that much yet to sacrifice damage for it.

Charge now provides a 260% increase in damage to the next physical attack that gets used. Basically it increases Rose's DPS (DPT?) by 30%.

Singularity now gives a 30% damage boost when striking a weakness. Anyways, one last order of business. Telling the Innkeeper what to write about.

DS Version

Now if you pick the first two choices, you'll actually get the lesser reward. Yeah, asking around town gets you the best reward since you put in more work that way.

Upon picking the 3rd option, you'll be asked if you should tell him to write about the townspeople's suggestions. You can say no to go to the next one. The thread voted that he should write about his goals, so let's tell him that.

How about your goals? I'm sure that there's something you're willing to accomplish.

My goals... I want to catch bigger fish, I want to be a better helper at the inn... Wow, I have a lot I can write about! I wonder if it’s weird to have so many goals, haha. Thank you for your time! I left the reward at the bar, so please get it there! Oh! And in thanks for what you’ve done for me, I’ll take 50% off your storage fees, ok? Please don’t tell the other guilds about this, though!

No matter which choice you pick, you'll always knock down the cost of storage to 50en per item. His first few sentences changes depending on the other choices. Yeah, the choice you make here doesn't matter too much, but the quest line was intended to be longer, and the choice you made here was planned to affect the next quest slightly, but that got taken out for some reason. Anyways, if you tell him to write about flowers:

Flowers... I don’t know very much about them, but I think Elly would enjoy reading it. Okay! I don’t know if I can say a whole lot about them, but I’ll give it a try!

Fishermen:

Fishermen... I see, she might be able to relate to that since her father is a fisherman.

His work:

My job... Well, I do see a lot of people every day, so I have a lot to talk about. Hmm! I’ve got a few ideas about what to write now. I think I can do something!

His family:

My family... That would be easy for Elly to relate to, yeah! If my parents find out I wrote about them, I might get scolded, but life’s about risks!

His hobbies:

My hobbies... Well, I go fishing a lot. Should I talk about fish? Or my equipment? Oh, I’m sorry. I was just thinking aloud, but I do have a good idea what I can say now. Fishing’s a good choice! I can say a lot about it. I’ll give that a try.

DS Version

Looks like that boy got the help he needed, yes? I saw how hard you tried for him! I do run this place, after all! I am always glaring at people to get their requests done! I wonder what kind of letter that rascal is going to write now that you helped him. With your advice-ings, though, there should be no worries! Explorers are always writing! I wish someone would write me a letter like that. Why don’t you do it? That would be nice. Well, here is your rewarding for this one. Take it!

If you told the boy to write about flowers or fishermen, you would only get one Shock Oil. The exp reward is the same. Missy's first two sentences change if you told the boy to write about flowers or fishermen.

Well, hello, everyone! It is looking like you helped out that boy! I wonder what kind of letter that rascal is going to write now that you helped him.

And then she continues on as normal.

Next time: The 4th floor.

The wildlings seemed really useful in all those quests. The cow had a ton of health and did a bunch of damage, the venomfly's poison did most of the damage, and the elephant had a useful status on top of its AOE. Why did the cow seem to have different HP each time it was summoned though, is it somewhat random?

The formula for determining the amount of HP a beast will have is HP = [((((Base HP) * (Beast Soul)) + ((10% of Wildling's current HP) + (Wildling's Lvl))) * Beast Soul) + a random number from the skill level to 3 * the skill level]

Each animal has a base amount of HP that they come with at each skill level.
Beast Soul has an HP bonus, which is applied twice for some reason.
The 10% of the Wildling's current HP and their level are added onto the beast's HP.
And then a random number ranging from the level of the skill used at the time, to 3 times that same skill level (10 to 30 if the ability is at level 10) is then added on to the final result.

Here's a screenshot of Fang's Venomfly to use as an example:

Fang has the following skills:
Beast Soul: Level 1
Call Insect: Level 4
-The Venomfly has a base HP of 26 at this level.

He is also level 11 at this time, and currently has 48 HP. So the formula would end up looking like:

[((((26) * (1.1)) + ((4) + (11))) * 1.1) + 4 to 12] = 51 to 59 HP.

Something to note about Etrian Odyssey's formulas in every game is that they round down after every single multiplication or division that occurs within the formula. In most cases anyway.

I think it's using integer mathematics and never considering the decimals, if that's the case. So it sees 11/3 as just 3. Probably because that non-terminating decimal would gently caress something up.

Wow, I never knew status effects stopped working after a while. Especially not that they stop working on your own party, too. (But I slowly started to suspect the first time I went up against Narmer and hosed myself royally by having one too many poison-weapons equipped. After 1-2 successes with minimal damage, the status effect started missing every time. The poison-butterfly I was using as my main source of damage never landed a single hit with the effect.)

Now doesn't this mean enemies depending on status effects are essentially hosed if you can survive long enough? Sounds actually pretty neat, some enemies back from EOII were practically roadblocks if you didn't come with tons of items.

Probably. But in some cases, it perfectly understands decimals and waits until a certain point in the formula to cut them off, like the Ailment Formula.

Accuracy = [(1.17 + (0.83 * (Sin((0.07*((2 * Attacker's LUC + Attacker's TEC) - (2 * Defender's LUC + Defender's TEC)) - 0.20)))) * Base Accuracy]

Although it only understands up to 4 decimal places in this case, presumably to deal with non-terminating decimals.

Poison forges are awful. I only found this out recently (and edited into the last update), but the formula for the poison damage is (Weapon Power / 2) + a random # from 1 to 10 (Also applies to Plague forges.) The strongest weapon in the game has an attack power of 225, so you're looking at 113 to 122 damage ticks. Not that Poison is a great ailment in this game, because the most Poison can tick for is 350 through Call Insect, which falls off very fast. For reference, Narmer has 3281 HP and a Poison resistance of 20%. Yeah.

You couldn't even beat Assassincopter!!!

This sounds horribly familiar somehow :shepicide:

Probably. But in some cases, it perfectly understands decimals and waits until a certain point in the formula to cut them off, like the Ailment Formula.

Accuracy = [(1.17 + (0.83 * (Sin((0.07*((2 * Attacker's LUC + Attacker's TEC) - (2 * Defender's LUC + Defender's TEC)) - 0.20)))) * Base Accuracy]

Although it only understands up to 4 decimal places in this case, presumably to deal with non-terminating decimals.

This is the reason why I started replacing poison with blind the second go around. Worked a whole lot better and synergizes wonderfully with my Poison-Wildling. (As in the weapons aren't stealing her chance to do damage.)

It also apparently works different on poison as a skill, since butterflies have non-existent attack power and still do triple-digit poison damage.

Night-vision Goggles Equipped!

That's specifically for poison forges I'm assuming.

Also, I doubt it's supposed to be a multiplier. EO is fairly consistent in it's damage numbers and while attack numbers can vary largely on multihit skills, usually the damage stays around the same. It'd be really weird to jump around from ~130 to ~1300 poison damage randomly with the forges.

Update 15: Don't Pet the Deer

I don't know if I can really handle this. Maybe I'm not cut out for exploring.

Get into position! Fight!

I leveled up my Princess and Farmer to 12 to get them to catch up with the others. And I opt to level up Attack Order instead of Monarch March, because healing 3 HP per step will be sufficient for now. Attack Order increases a row's physical attack power by 20% for 4 turns. A very good ability, and something you want maxed out eventually.

Putting a single point into Attack Order unlocks these skills. They act like the elemental oils in that they imbue a person's regular attacks with a specific element, but these skills also increase that character's resistance to the specified element. They provide a 10% resistance at level 1 and a 50% resistance at level 5. I don't find these useful because regular attacks are awful in the EO series, and there's a much better way to defend against elemental attacks.

Lullaby now has a 40% chance to put enemies to sleep. Now there's some more stuff to do on the Sea, so let's go do that.

DS Version

The other ship has noticed you as well, and one of the sailors waves as you approach.

You’re adventurers from Armoroad, right? I bet you’d have pretty rare stuff. Why not trade some of those goods you only get in the maze? I’ll make it worth your while. As a gesture of friendship, let me give you this parchment. It’s old and has some value.

The sailor tosses a scroll over to you, and you easily catch it.

I graciously accept your gift!

Right, let’s get down to business. I need some Topaz at the moment. Got any to spare?

Unfortunately, I don't. If I did, he would have given us an item like a Medica, or even a book. The items differ from ship to ship.

I'm sorry, but we don't have any of those right now.

Don’t want to trade, eh? No worries. Let’s do business next time, then.

The sailor returns to his cabin and sets sail for the next trading post on his itinerary.

Let's see what this says.

:ohdear:

This day seems to be hotter than usual.

You said it! I'm roasting in this weather.

Burned and weary, you can’t bear the thought of wearing your armor any longer. As you despondently gaze upon the beautiful blue waters, one word pops into your mind... Swimming! Luckily, the sea is calm, making this the perfect time for a dip! Any potential dangers lurking beneath the surface cannot hold back the temptation... You can choose to enjoy a swim in the water, or hold out and continue, avoiding any threat.

Woo hoo! Let's go swimming! Cannonball!

You decide that everyone needs a break once in a while and strip off your armor. The cold seawater feels good on your burnt skin, and the brightly-colored fish cheer your spirits. For a brief moment, you are able to forget your troubles and duties, and simply relax.

I think that's enough swimming for now. Everyone, back to the Tug Life!

Pfft, who's responsible for that name? Hey, where's Fang?

But, when the party returns to the ship refreshed, you notice Fang has yet to return... You all begin searching the area and see the lifeless body of Fang floating face-up!

Hurry and take him back to the ship!

Bring him here, I know how to resuscitate him!

You hurry to bring Fang back aboard the ship, where Asteria performs CPR!

AUGH! MY LEGS!

:ughh: Kid, you gotta stretch before you start swimming or you'll get muscle cramps.

It seems Fang was foolish enough to jump in without warming up and got a cramp. You all vow to stretch before you go swimming next time, and return to your voyage.

There's a couple of spots where you can opt to go swimming if it's daytime. If you accept, you'll either have a chance of getting an item, or someone comes back with a cramp and you get nothing.

No favor is too small for us! What is your request?

You must have had difficulties opening a route here, what with the eddies, reefs, and pirates. The other day, a merchant ship loaded with Black Pepper crashed on a reef to the east. According to one of the ship’s survivors, the merchandise is likely to be intact. ...I can see you know what I’m going to ask. We want you to find and recover the Black Pepper.

You suddenly recall the crates of Black Pepper that you salvaged from the ocean. You ask the soldier to wait here and bring the crates from your ship.

Ah, no worries. We've already found the Black Pepper. We'd be happy to give it to you.

You already found it and brought it here!? ...Please, accept these as your reward.

The soldier hands you a silver coin and an old book. He then disappears into the mass of people in the city, likely to report this to the mayor.

You nod with satisfaction, and prepare to set sail with your spirits high.

Ooh, a sea dragon! I wonder if it'll be a good friend.

Heh, I can't wait to get into a tussle with that thing.

There's one last thing left for us to find.

Ah, that was a good swim!

We appear to be short one person. Again.

Great, did Fang get another cramp?

Nope! I stretched this time!

Then who-wait, where's Alice?

You all begin searching the area and see Alice pop out from the below holding something.

Sorry, everyone. I tried to come back as fast as I could, but I saw this stone, and it took me a while to get it out of the seaweed.

Hmm, I wonder if this rock is some sort of rare artifact. In any case, excellent job, Alice!

My sediments exactly!

...That was dumb.

Bah, everyone's a critic.

Alice excitedly shows you a black stone tile made of an unknown material. There are characters engraved on it, but you do not understand the language they are in. However, you recognize this as a rare find, and carefully wrap it in a cloth to take with you.

:stare: How about we just get back to exploring the Labyrinth?

Agreed.

Okay.

There's nothing more for us left on the ocean, so let's go back to the Labyrinth.

First things first, unfinished business. Also, because Alice now has POWER, I placed her at the front.

Wh-Why do I need to be at the front!?

Come on Alice. You need to learn how to fight. Farming for materials is fine, but we can do that on our own time. If you're gonna explore with us, you need to learn how to defend yourself. Now ATTACK! :black101:

DS Version

I've already made a huge mistake here. Can you figure out what it is?

Oh, so this the part where I tell everyone to SEVER THAT HIPPO'S HEAD AND BRING IT TO ME! :black101:

Um, something like that I guess.

:ughh:

The mistake was using Lullaby. Trying to use that skill was a mistake for several reasons.

AAAHHHH!

:tizzy: Big mistake.

For one thing, Alice could have easily shrugged that off if she weren't asleep.

I'll make you wish you never did that.

Go Mr. Butterfly! Go!

Here's another reason using Lullaby was a mistake. Even if Alice stayed alive, Rose wouldn't have been able to initiate this Limit because Alice was asleep. If you can't control that party member, then they can't use the Limit.

I don't know if I can do this.

Come on, Alice. You can't let a little failure put you down.

MR. BUTTERFLY! NOOOO!

Whenever a summon dies, they immediately disappear.

I guess the good do die young...

Unfortunately, I'm out of Nectars at this point.

Eventually it goes down. Unfortunately, since Alice died, the party doesn't get Earth's Bounty exp bonus.

The Hippo Tusk unlocked this item. I could buy this for Rose, but it's a little too pricey for me right now.

DS Version

Has the Senatus given their approval?

Indeed! We have taken up the mission to slay this, “Narmer.”

Very well. You are free to proceed if you wish.

The young man stands to one side and throws you some medicine, calling it a parting gift.

Narmer... In the ancient tongue, it means ’raging catfish.’ Do not fight it in anything but peak condition.

The young man steps aside, clearing the way.

May you live long enough for our paths to cross again. Goodbye.

You take his words to heart before going your own way.

Sounds like a fierce little monster. I'm getting all fired up already! Heh, I'm getting too excited. I need to beat something's skull in.

Like that thing!

A deer? Are you sure about this? And didn't one of the bar patrons warn us about those?

A mere deer won't be enough to stop us! Let's raise our blades with pride, and strike that deer down! :black101:

Ah, the Furyhorn. Probably one of the first things that come to mind if you talk to EO players about FOEs. They're usually one of the first FOEs you come across in an EO game, and if you try to take them on, you'll either have some dead party members or a game over if you're stupid enough to keep fighting after it killed some people.

How the mighty have fallen. Furyhorns are pathetic in this game. They only have one remotely threatening move, and no damage skills. While Muddle Roar inflicts Confusion, it only affects the front row, and thanks to how ailments work in this game, you cane easily outlast the Furyhorn if you had to. Its regular attacks deal a pathetic amount of damage, and by this point, you probably have the tools needed to take one down.

Standard opening tactics, except this time I don't have Alice use Lullaby.

I should note that Alice's damage is on par with Rose's regular attacks, so there is a reason I stuck her in the front.

Seriously, that is just pathetic. Even Alice could survive that.

The only danger in this fight is your own party members. And even then, that won't be a factor after the front row gets confused 4 times.

:cawg: And now I'm having EO1 flashbacks.

You really shouldn't have any trouble with these FOEs.

They can perform a nasty attack with the Fanged Fish.

I think I understand how to fight now. This is kind of fun!

You didn't have to hit it so hard.

Of course, if you kill off one of the Fanged Fish, you'll cancel the Limit entirely.

They're not super tough, but something to watch out for.

The stream is deeper than it looks and its current is swift. There’s no guarantee you can get the gem. Then again, would it really be so harmful to try...?

Ooh, I wonder if I can reach tha-OW!

In retrospect, putting my arm into a place where carnivorous fish live was a terrible idea.

You think?

Of course, if you do have a Zodiac, they're very easy to deal with.

Um, I don't think we have any more room for this. Our pack's overflowing.

Hmm, looks like we'll have to throw some stuff out.

You have a limited inventory in the EO games. If you go over the limit, you'll be forced to throw some items out. If this happens, it's usually a sign that you should go back since you've been in the Labyrinth long enough. Or you over-prepared and brought too many supplies.

And now we have a quick way back here. At this point I went back and sold most of my stuff to unlock new equipment.

DS Version

Nothing interesting. I restock and upgrade as necessary.

After spending a while on the 4th floor, this quest unlocks. You really want to make sure to do this one.

I like the sound of “Fish Extermination Day.” What do have to do for this?

Oh, you are accepting this request? This is a tricky one. The Fish Extermination is a traditional event in Armoroad. This is your first time, yes? If the Fanged Fish and the Devilfish are left alone on B4F, they breed very quickly. So, the Senatus created the Armoroad Fish Extermination Day to wipe those pests out. The guild that defeats the most fish will get an extra reward! If you want to be coming in first place, you have no time for wasting!

DS Version

This should scare the meanies away.

I have Fang learn Primal Drums, which is one of the best support skills in the game. What it does is it lowers all enemies' physical defenses by a certain amount, in this case 10%. Essentially this skill is an attack buff for your party, without eating up a buff slot. You're only allowed to have 3 different buffs and debuffs in the EO series before they start getting overwritten. I should probably note that defense debuffs do not get directly applied to damage resistances in this game, unlike EO1 and 2, so you can't use them to activate Singularity. (This was a trick you could pull off in EO2 with the Alchemist's Analysis passive.) It's a great skill and gives the Wildling some utility outside of inflicting ailments. A shame that it's only available for that class...

Nothing too exciting for Rose, but there is a skill I'm working towards.

Lullaby now has a 45% chance to inflict Sleep.

Now I'll show off what this guard gives you if you give him a Sharp Tooth or a Purple Scale. The dialogue is mostly the same and uninteresting.

Yeah, it's really not worth trading with him.

Now back on the 3rd flo-hey, what's that?

SHINY! MUST KILL! :black101:

Pasaran
HP: 120

Exp: 5000

Description: A fluffy monster that brings good fortune. It is so light that winds quickly blow it away.
Damage Resistances: Slash: 25% Strike: 25% Pierce: 25% Fire: 25% Ice: 25% Volt: 25% Almighty: 25%

Other Resistances: Death: 1% Petrification: 1% Stun: 10%

Skills:

Escape: Uses the Legs. The Pasaran flees from battle, denying you exp and disappears from the map.

Pasarans are very special FOEs. One of the bar NPCs mentioned that they appear after camping, which is sort of true, but they actually have a chance of appearing shortly after the clock changes to the next hour. They appear on set tiles and then try to run away from you. They only move once every 4 turns, but they can move over any tile and can phase through walls. If they reach the edge of the map, they'll disappear until the next one spawns. So if your plan your movements carefully.

Anyways, even if you do catch up to them, they're a pain to actually kill. If you've played the Dragon Quest games, you know what Metal Slimes are, right? Pasarans are basically those things, rare enemies that are a pain to kill because they try to run away or something, but give out a massive reward.

If you run into the back of an FOE, you'll get a preemptive strike. The same goes for them, if they run into your back, your party will be blindsided. Now if you don't get a preemptive strike, you can run away to get behind them. Pasarans only disappear from the map when they run away.

Pasarans have a 25% resistance to all damage types, including Almighty. So it can take a while to kill them, but they have a bad habit of trying to run away. The best way to kill them? Either use Leg binds to stop them from running away, since they aren't resistant to it. Or...

Charge up a Limit and let loose. That does a lot of damage and Limit skills never miss.

Now Pasarans actually reside in all Strata, but they get stronger and have more nasty tricks up their sleeves the further you progress, but they give out more exp as you get into the later Strata. They are also the only enemies in the game that actually resist Almighty damage, so that's something to keep in mind.

Are you from Tidehunt?

Indeed!

Well met. The woman from the Butterfly Bistro spoke of you. ”The Senatus has issued this request to all the adventurers visiting the kingdom’s bars. We would like you to defeat as many Fanged Fish and Devilfish on this floor as you can. In order to encourage you to do so, we have implemented a ranking system. A guild’s rank is determined by the total number of these pests that are defeated. Last time, the Amoro Hunting Group won by defeating 50 fish. Consider that while you fight.

Your score will not be considered until you defeat at least 15 of these pests. If you leave before defeating 15, you will have to accept the quest from the bar again. That concludes my explanation. If you have no further questions, we would like to begin. Ready?

Oh I'm ready to slice up some fish. Let's go!

I will be looking forward to seeing how Tidehunt performs in the rankings. Now, go!

The guard gives you an encouraging smile and directs you to proceed into the forest.

So this is a killing contest quest. These are the only kinds of quests that can actually be failed. If that happens, you need to hand in your quest report early and then accept it again. In order to get 1st place, you need to kill 50 or more fish. You should absolutely try for 1st place since the prize is a really good one, and helps with the upcoming fight with Narmer.

If we're going to be fighting a lot of fish, maybe we should look near the rivers.

Try to get into encounters around river tiles, since that's the best place to look for Devilfish.

Now there's a little trick you can do to make this go by faster.

It's gonna take a while to hunt down and kill all these fish.

Hmm, instead of hunting them down, why not let them come to us?

First, kill off every enemy except for any Devilfish.

After all, they call for their brethren to assist them!

And then have the Devilfish keep summoning Fanged Fish so you can kill them to rack up your score. Unfortunately, you can't do this forever.

I don't think it can call in any more fish. It looks too tired.

Eventually the Devilfish will stop summoning allies. This is because it ran out of TP trying to use Ferocious Fish and Sharp Fang. Yes, that TP stat I've listed actually comes into play here, and the enemies' skills do use it up. However, random encounters won't run out of TP unless you drag out the battle too long, and forget about trying to run FOEs and bosses dry. When the Devilfish does nothing but attack, just kill it.

Now you can get a maximum of 8 drops out of a battle. Anymore items that drop will be erased.

You count up your kills and realize that you have now defeated 15 fish. You can end this quest now, or continue exterminating the fish and strive for a higher score.

Fortunately, the game keeps a tally for you in these quests so you don't have to count the kills yourself.

Singularity now provides a 50% damage boost if you strike a weakness. So Asteria's Star attacks essentially deal 60% TEC damage if they hit a weakness.

...You think about the previous year’s winning tally that the guard mentioned earlier. You can end this quest now, or continue exterminating the fish and strive for a higher score.

The message you get for killing 30 fish.

There is no doubt in your mind that your guild will earn a high rank in the competition. You can end this quest now, or continue exterminating the fish and strive for a higher score.

40 fish.

You are utterly convinced that you have destroyed enough pests to win the competition! You should find a guard and tell him that you are done with this quest.

How many did we kill, cause I lost count.

I think we got enough to win that contest. I don't see anyone else fighting fish.

And the message for killing 50 fish. You're done at this point. But before I go back, I decide to explore a bit more.

A Furyhorn patrols this room.

:gibs:

It goes down easily, but not before Alice committed suicide.

Attack Order now boosts a rows physical damage output by 24%.

Leveling up Attack Order to 3 unlocked this skill which is really complicated to explain. I'll go more into detail about it later.

Leveling up Sword Mastery to 3 unlocked a skill I'll get for Rose later.

Lullaby now has a 50% chance to land.

Primal Drums reduces all enemies' defense by 15%.

Oh boy.

I'll show this off later, but this item is one of the best additions to the series. But don't waste this on the 1st boss. It is so not worth it.

The pack is close to bursting, so let's go back and see how we did in the contest.

DS Version

Is everyone here? We will now announce the results of the Fish Extermination Competition!

If your guild ties with someone, you'll have priority over them since you're a newer guild.

That concludes that ranking announcement! The Senatus thanks you all for your hard work! Winning guilds, report back to the bar you accepted the quest at for your rewards. Dismissed!

Was there ever any doubt? Now let's get our prize!

Ah, hello! Is it truth that you earned the 1st place!? The city is in an uproar! The name of the Tidehunt Guild will be known all throughout Armoroad! Enjoy your new fame as master fish exterminators! Here is your reward, along with the prize money! Take it! Do not be shy!

Liar! There's no prize money! Ah well, the Amritas are actually a fantastic reward at these point. I'll say this right now, you want to save these for the boss. The amount of Amritas and the amount of exp you get depend on how many fish you killed. The rewards are as follows:

15 Fish: 1 Amrita, 700 exp per person.
30 Fish: 2 Amritas, 800 exp per person.
40 Fish: 3 Amritas, 900 exp per person.
50 Fish: 5 Amritas, 1000 exp per person.

And here's all of Missy's possible dialogue for when you turn in the report.

15 Fish:

Ah, you’re back! Well done! I see you were not in the top rankings... Well, there was much competition. So it goes. I think it is better to do what you feel you are capable of, and not take desperate measurings. That is, do not be greedy if you are unsure if you can succeed. Well, is all waterings under the britches now, yes? Here is your reward! Take it!

3rd place:

Ah, you’re back! Congratulation! You reached 3rd place, yes? Amazing work! Having the 3rd place team come from my bar will pick up my business surely! Fantastic! Your drinks are on me for today! Be drinking upwards! Oh, before I am forgetting... Here is your reward and prize money. You take it!

2nd place:

I am hearing the news already! Well done! Did you know that you earned 2nd place in the Fish Extermination Competition? You are sure to become famous here in Armoroad for your piscine-murdering abilities! What a happy day today is! Your drinks are on me today! Yes! Oh, I am almost forgetting. Before you start drinking, here is your reward! Take it!

And the items I unlocked.

Next time: The Hunt for Narmer.

Update 16: Preparing for the 1st Boss

Let's check up on how the guild is doing, and go over how to properly prepare for the first Stratum boss of the game.

Tomorrow's the big day! Now, who should be responsible for hunting down a catfish?

Refresh now affects a row.

If you're bringing along a Monk, you should probably have some points into Line Heal, and I recommend leveling up Refresh to the point where it heals a row. (Level 4)

I hope Faye chooses wisely. We need people that can work well with each other.

Guardian reduces physical damage by 13%.

While Shield Mastery reduces it by a mere 3%.

I'll protect you, no matter what the cost.

But leveling up Shield Mastery to 3 unlocks this skill. Bodyguard is an absolute must have for a Hoplite. The Hoplite can choose who they want to protect, and any attacks that head to that character's way will hit the Hoplite instead. The skill actually reduces any physical damage taken by a certain amount, in this case by 30%, and maxes out at 60% by level 10. Leveling up the skill increases the damage reduction, but the fact that you can completely prevent certain party members from taking damage is the important part. So this is either a skill you leave at level 1 or max out, it's up to you. It can combo extremely well with Berserker's Vow, essentially making it completely safe for the Gladiator to sacrifice their HP. There is a minor bug with the skill that will almost never come into play. Bodyguard protects the slot, not the actual character. This only comes into play if you use the Switch function, so it doesn't matter too much.

Hoplites are a good class to bring along since Line Guard and Bodyguard are good for protection. I recommend that your Hoplite also has a point in Provoke to take the heat off of everyone else.

That catfish'll be dead in a few seconds if I come along!

Bolt Mastery is now level 5.

Leveling it up to 3 unlocked this skill. Strafe is a skill that hits enemies randomly, but it can't hit the same enemy twice, so it's meant for clearing out random encounters. This is a terrible skill. It's not an actual AOE, which the Arbalist has, and the damage is pathetic ranging from 100% to 125% from levels 1 through 10. It does hit from 3 to 5 times at max level, but that's a small comfort.

This should make things electrifying.

These are the Arbalist's actual AOEs. And contrary to what the descriptions say, these deal Pierce/Elemental damage. You want one of these skills for the boss, it doesn't matter which. These skills are great for dealing with random encounters thanks to their elemental attributes. As for these skills, put a single point into each of them and never touch them again. These skills scale horribly, dealing 80% to 125% damage from levels 1 through 10. There is only one situation where I would advocate maxing these, and even then I think it's a bad idea.

Arbalists are a great class to bring along because they bring a lot of physical damage to the table, and have access to AOE damage skills.

I must admit that this is an odd task, but we must honor their wishes.

Knife Mastery is now level 3.

Shhh. Statues don't speak.

And since Kagenui is level 3, Izuna is unlocked. What this skill does is it deals a decent amount of damage and has a chance to Petrify an enemy. What Petrification does is that whoever gets inflicted with it won't be able to act until the ailment is dispelled. Petrified allies can still take damage, and will still gain exp if they're alive at the end of the battle, but it's the only ailment that persists outside of battle, it never wears off on its own. And because of that, if your entire party is petrified, it counts as a game over. However, since enemies can't dispel ailments, Petrification just counts as another form of instant death, but it's impossible to inflict it on bosses. Despite that, I just had him learn it so he could use a real damage skill, and it does work on FOEs. At level 4 Izuna deals 161% damage and has a 31% chance to inflict Petrification.

Ninjas can actually eliminate the need for an AOE damage move thanks to Bunshin. And having an extra party member to do whatever is always useful.

Any fin is possible if you don't trout yourself!

Zodiacs are one of the best damage dealers to bring to the fight, as long as they know Volt Star. They also have access to AOE damage skills if you've skilled them that way.

Pfft, unreasonable task. How hard could it be to take down this “Narmer?”

Princesses can help your party take down the boss with their buffs. Both Attack Order and Guard Order can be helpful in the fight, although Guard Order won't work on one of its attacks. If yours has Prevent Order, that could come in handy, but I don't think it's necessary to do that.

I wonder how tough this catfish is. Can't wait to see for myself.

Gladiators are also decent damage dealers, and they can charge up their physical attacks and Limits to deal a lot of damage. They do have access to an AOE skill, but the skill is pretty awful, and I wouldn't recommend getting it just for this fight.

Come all you young sailor men, listen to me. I'll sing you a song of the fish in the sea.~

Hanging now deals 236% damage and has a 58% chance to inflict Head bind.

Buccaneers don't have a lot going for them at this point in the game, but they can provide some utility with Eagle Eye and lower the boss' physical defenses if you have that for them.

I guess I can't make friends with the catfish. Oh well.

Wildlings can be a mixed bag depending on how you skilled them. They do have a AOE damage move, so they can be helpful for the fight, but the boss is pretty resistant to ailments, meaning that they'll run out of things to do fast. At least Primal Drums is a really good utility skill.

I hope I won't bring the guild down if I come along.

I don't know what you're expecting to accomplish by bringing a Farmer to the fight.

Anyways, here's a bit of info on the boss, and some tips.

Stratum 1 Boss
HP: 3281
AT: 20
DF: 16
Weakness: Volt
Resistance: N/A

Absolute must haves:

-Any Amritas you've saved up will come in very handy here, since this fight could last a while depending on your team composition.

-Tents. Maybe two of them. This may sound like strange advice, but just trust me on this.

-Any ways to dispel ailments, whether it's through a Monk's Refresh or Therica Bs.

Highly recommended, but not required:

-Any form of Volt damage will make the fight go by faster.

-AOE damage moves or a Bunshin Ninja will make the fight easier on yourself, but aren't required as long as you have a good memory.

Just don't:

-Using up that Formaldehyde on the first boss. Its conditional drop is an easy one to get as long as you come back for it later. Save the Formaldehyde for the actually tough drops.

-Trying to even get the conditional drop. If you qualify for the conditional drop, the game will prevent you from getting the regular drop. Boss conditionals tend to unlock postgame equipment that you can't afford, while their regular drops unlocks a decent piece of equipment for one of your classes. The boss conditionals do sell for a decent amount, but as long as you play smart you shouldn't have too many money troubles. Also, bosses don't respawn until you reach the final floor of the next Stratum, so you can't even farm for them. And by the time they respawn, the equipment you unlock from their regular drops will be outclassed.

With that in mind, vote for up to 3 characters to come along for the fight. Votes must be bolded.
