The issue with imprisonment is that generally when you can do it, you get one "free" action against that person - and imprisonment itself counts. So you can throw them in jail but then you're stuck because you've used up your freebie so you either leave them to rot or just let them out (or ransom them if they have a title). Banishment is basically never "free" because even when you do get cause to revoke a title, banishment counts as a revocation for EACH title you strip from them. Execution oddly enough is considered less tyrannical than banishment most of the time.

Yeah I get what you're saying but when you imprison a vassal you run the risk they escape and raise a rebellion so to me once you get them imprisoned you should have more free reign to do what you want within reason because you just did the risky part. Like I don't think executing them should cost you or at least not cost you heavily at that point but banishing and revoking all the titles should cost you more because you are basically wiping out an entire family

Its not a big deal its just the annoying thing about some of the people you imprison is that no matter what you do they're going to hate you, quite possibly for good reason, so you can't release them but your going to take rep hits with people asking for their release

Execution is almost always going to be a smaller deal than stripping a noble house of its holdings, not just acting against one guy but his heirs and entire line. One is an offense against a person, but the other is a pretty fundamental abrogation of the feudal sensibilities so you need a good loving reason for it. Hell Machiavelli even says basically "Kill dudes if you need to, but by Christ make sure their heirs still have their wealth or you'll have real problems on your hands."

I just let everyone who can pay anything go. I mean, I have so many prisoners as a Viking that I always get at least 4 who can't pay the ransom and that's as many as I can sacrifice so I might as well get paid for the others.

I'd totally use a mod that let you sacrifice every prisoner at once, though.

Playing as a custom kingdom encompassing large swaths of Finland and Russia, the reformed Slavics declare a Great Holy War on me. poo poo. The Slavic Premyslyd dynasty (or however it's spelled) controls separately the kingdoms of Lithuania, Bohemia, Ruthenia, Pannonia, Poland, and Pomerania, and the "Warriors of Perun" control all of Germany. Any one of those world powers at least equals me in troops, most of them exceed me. I think, "Welp! I'm boned."

Then I click on their holy leader to see where she's holed up, and it's the next county over. So I send several thousand troops to the temple, cart her out on her rear end and make her say sorry. For doing this, I am nicknamed "The Hammer".

EDIT: The slavs also control Croatia, albeit with a different dynasty. Holy hell they're doing well this game.

Shitposting in Seattle

I think my favorite playthrough was when Old Gods first came out and was horribly broken... The Byzantines were smashed quickly by the abbasids who collapsed in decadence revolts, Spain fell to Islam too, while the Norse handily absorbed the British Isles, while the Magyars remained Tengrii and kept Europe on its toes, the Karlings squabbled while the Christian world was reduced to France, Germany and Italy... then the Seljuks showed up and turned North for some reason and conquered all the way to Bavaria... I eventually ended up the Emperor of all Christianity and used the console to make the pope a vassal (:catholic:) as I tried to maintain control of Europe while heresy ran rampant. Then things got worse when the Aztecs invaded because I just expended a ton of resources driving the Scottish-Norse trade republic from England to have my armies smashed apart and my empire collapsed into a bunch of heretic realms. Finally the mongols ravaged the east until they reformed Tengrism, and lasted till Timur annihilated everything in the east and formed an empire spanning from Poland to Arabia...

If the new horde expansion can make that utter insanity of a game again I am sold.

Best part though was the Norse Fylkir declaring a holy war against the aztecs for Ireland that said Thor will strike down the feathered serpent and winning. :black101:

I'd genuinely be down for another expansion pack that just messes up history in the way that Sunset Invasion does. Charlemagne actually comes close at times given how often I see Catholicism just completely shatter when I play it, but its not quite the same.

I've only played a short game as Charlemagne as I got bored of him eventually (being too powerful never interests me too much), are there events where Charlemagne gets Abul-Abbas at any point in the game? If not, Groogy, you need to add an event where Charlemagne can spend a whole load of money for a single event spawned war elephant unit. Make it a real bitch to receive, like the canals in EUIV. I want my elephant.

To be completely honest, the Karens are only worth playing if you have a real perverse desire to prove what hot poo poo you are at the game. Rajas expanded Persia considerably, so whereas before you could squeak out a win against the Saffarids if you bribed & chancellored them for long enough to beat up the Samanids and take their poo poo, right now you're basically never going to be able to go toe-to-toe against Persia with just Khiva. Your other avenue of expansion is Turkestan, which sucks. You're reliant on getting really really lucky, and you might not know you're completely hosed until like an hour into the game.

Just start as Yaqub Saffarid, occupy the Zoroastrian province in Fars before you peace out of you initial conquest war, move your capital to it, and convert.

I remember eons ago doing my Zoroastrian game doing the opposite. Converting to Sunni when I was holy war'd and then reconverting when I was strong enough to stand up for myself.

You can seize land if you want it (Trade republics have two unique CBs - one that lets you take control of a city in a province where you have a trade post, and one that lets you take the whole county if you control a city there), but your main source of income is going to be from trade posts, and for those you're going to need a lot of unlanded male dynasty members in your court. So your priorities should be:

1) Build trade posts
2) Arrange marriages for as many male dynasty members as you can (so they can have sons which will allow you to do more of 1), don't give them landed titles.
3) Win elections, which should be fairly trivial since you'll have more than enough money from trade posts alone.
4) Build more cities in your capital county if you have room.
5) Seize other counties, build cities or baronies there.

5 is more or less optional - Republics CAN be played as a big empire, but unlike Feudal realms, don't really HAVE to. You can continue to increase your income without acquiring more land, and you can hire mercenaries to serve as your military protection. Hell you'll probably be making enough money that you can just keep mercenaries around as a standing army. Your estate provides a pretty decent amount of troops on its own, too. Also, if you've got the Legacy of Rome DLC, Merchant Republics can get a lot of retinue points by building garrisons at your trade posts.

If you have Way of Life having your first guy take the Seduction focus can be good too. If you invite a lot of debutants you can breed an army of sons (don't bother to legitimise the daughters, they can't inherit in a republic so just acknowledging them is enough). Your wife will hate you and you'll get tagged as a poxy adulterous cradle-robber, but as long as you stick to unmarried women it isn't too much of an opinion hit.

If you can get a bunch of sons that should be self-sustaining in future generations, so your subsequent dudes can focus on other things. Your sons are all pretty mad about being locked into Seniority Succession, so in the long run a bunch of sons isn't as good as a bunch of more distant Kinsmen.
