I just want to be clear... I don't know if this guy is anti-Muslim or not, or if Trinidad and Tobago as a whole has those tendencies. That's probably not the case. But to me, it really sounded like he was tossing "Muslim" in there, and I honestly still can't tell what that word is supposed to be. For all I know, it's just a mildly pejorative slang insult common in the local vernacular. I can't wait for the next show, because I wonder what Mr. Oliver will think he said. The mittens of disapproval are already on. Will we see the scarf of sternness? The parka of condemnation? The long johns of Oliver?

In an odd bit of coincidence, country music singer Randy Howard was killed Tuesday when a bounty hunter showed up at his place and a firefight broke out. Apparently the bounty hunter was serving a legal warrant but went inside Howard's house, which he could not legally do. And Tennessee, where this took place, is one of the states that does not require licenses for bounty hunting.

I feel like America, at least in some respects, is a really good fictional setting but not a great place to live in RL. Think about it: The prevalence of guns means you can write exciting stories without it being weird that people are packing. The terrible healthcare system gives writers an easy method of exerting pressure on characters (see Breaking Bad). And bounty hunters in films and tv are pretty cool, it's just that in real life having quasi-vigilantes running around unsupervised and armed is a really bad idea.

John Oliver is really good at starting slapfights he wont lose. That has to be the fifth time some important person personally responded to him. But I can see how the People of Trinidad and Tobago would be annoyed by this.

I guess Oliver was going for "keep it under 5 minutes but hey, laugh at my feeble white boy attempts to try to pronounce your local slang" but still.

For some context from the T&T point of view, here's a local program that discusses Warner and the FIFA scandal, particularly starting about 10 mins in. (Full disclosure, the only reason I even know about this clip is because Kejan was a good friend of mine in college.) http://youtu.be/OPlAOGDYRwk I think it's useful for seeing how Warner is viewed from the point of view of Trinidad and Tobago since all we're seeing is his comically evil side so it seems a little weird that anyone would have liked him to begin with.

So far I haven't found the show that "funny" but it is quite informative. I always like the long section about some issue that is still important but hasn't been getting a lot of buzz, such as chicken farmers.

I'm a geography nut, and have collected maps ever since I was a kid. So, when Mr. Oliver highlights a region on a map and does the whole "Now let's talk about X, which is a place you care so little about that you didn't even realize that this isn't X, it's Y...." routine, I am already ahead of him. The only trick is trying to figure out what he's actually highlighted is before he reveals it, which I can usually do except in the landlocked nations of South America and some of the newer Balkans. But last night, he topped himself. I knew that wasn't Azerbaijan. I was not expecting him to highlight something that wasn't even a land mass, though. Well played, sir.

I recognized the Caspian sea right away. It's the only thing in that region with consistent borders. Shame you can't say the same thing for its neighbor, the Aral sea. I'm not sure what Azerbaijan was expecting though. I don't think there's been an olympics in the last ten years that didn't have a scandal about human rights abuses.

If you watched 24 for the torture porn, you're doing it wrong. You're supposed to watch the show for the preposterous constant invocation of the 25th Amendment, failed perimeters, inventive Jack kills (like with ax), convoluted conspiracy plots, the cougar, incompetent bureaucrats, goons arguing over silent clocks, and arbitrary plot twists (when it was still a novelty rather than the rule of TV drama). Season 5 ruled. It deserved its Emmy. But seriously, is there really a full recording of Mirren's reading of the torture report? Echo Chamber fucked around with this message at 00:33 on Jun 16, 2015 |

I'm surprised he didn't bring up the fact that Kiefer Sutherland himself actually went around the country doing presentations against torture and asked the writers of the show to cut down on it after he found out that the show's popularity was being used to justify actual real world torture.
