Too bad your family dies at the start. I'd love to play a Chris Benoit run in FO4; get addicted to Buffout, attack your family with Unarmed weapons, then detonate yourself with explosives while they're down.

The steam forums for this game are a hilarious shitshow. Anyway, I can see the voiced protagonist having the same problems pretty much every bioware game does with its dialogue. An NPC will be like "What do you think of this this thing I'm doing?" and your options are basically "I like this thing!" and "I don't like this thing,. stop it!" but if you pick the stop it option, instead of saying what's listed your character like, stabs them or something. That and apparently there's only two voices for each character? It's kind of unsettling when a character doesn't sound like they should.

khy posted:Yes because that's what the character says, verbatim. A fair point, but when entire lines of dialogue are summarized with a few words in the interface, you have no idea what your character will end up saying. "GET FOOD" could translate into "I'm alone and hungry, my loyal robot friend. Do you know where I might find some sustenance?" or it could translate into "Get me some loving Insta-Mash you miserable bucket of bolts." "EVERYTHING'S DEAD" could be "My God, everything and everyone I love is gone!" or it could be "Good riddance". When you don't really know what you're going to say, you can't really do any roleplaying. khy posted:And too little feels awkward and stiff when you're journeying with a trusted companion who hardly says a word and silently follows in your every footstep. By all means, have companions talk, and let me respond. But don't have my character yell "BOOM HEADSHOT" or constantly point out landmarks.

In Fallout 4, when you hover your cursor over dialogue options, you will hear a ghostly reading of the actual lines (evocative of an internal monologue) so that you will know what the response actually says before your character says it. However, you cannot sit and mull over your options indefinitely--you will have limited time to offer responses before the game automatically selects the (typically) "neutral" response. This is to simulate the fact that you cannot sit and stare at another person/creature/thing for five minutes while you listen to your responses in your head.

I know you're joking, but I've heard that Alpha Protocol uses a similar system and I don't personally care for this approach. Sure, in real life you couldn't stare at someone in silence for 5 minutes to decide what to say, but you also wouldn't have to choose from several pre-written options in the first place, and you'd have the chance to go back and say "Wait, that's not what I meant" if things go badly.

It's better than in Skyrim where the NPCs just never shut up and I wound up getting a mod to shut them up because if I stopped moving for even three seconds to check the area anyone following me would just unleash a never ending torrent of "I'm here!" and "Yes?" type remarks. Or the Dragon's Dogma approach where the companions just straight up never stopped talking. Yes, game, I know goblins hate fire. I learned that the first ten thousand times the NPCs said it.
