Not really that bizarre when you consider that the "controller" is clearly designed for Mahjong and similar sorts of games.

Yeah but with these games you'd only need the A/B/C/D and E on there which were placed for that purpose unlike any other mahjong controller out around that time. It just seems weird they'd drop it so fast when they had some well regarded non mahjong games under their belt (many of which for Nichibutsu began on college computers before eventually appearing in arcades later on so a keyboard controller would be ideal for most).

In the late 90's there was a brief spat of convenience store management simulators in Japan. None of these games came out in the US and they're tough to play without some knowledge of Japanese, but they're still kind of interesting. The Conveni for the Saturn (there's also a PS1 version) lets you build an entire convenience store empire. You start from a map of a city where you have to buy a lot for your first store. Laws vary from neighborhood to neighborhood so some locations can't sell some things. Right behind the high school seems the perfect place to set up a cigarette and beer store! Once the site is selected you build a store layout. You can use a default one: Or build your own: You pick the type of shelves and choose what to stock in them. There's also things like parking spaces, vending machines, and scenery to deal with: So now your store is built, you need employees. There's a set of guys who you can hire to work your shop. You also set the hours the shop is open, but your employees live there full time. Yes, I picked that guy as my store manager. Finally you're ready to open for business and that pretty much runs itself. You can sit back and watch customers rush in and your little guys work (or not work as the case may be). If they're lazy then your store will get trashed or they might not restock the shelves properly: You can back out of that view to go buy other convenience stores or build whole new ones as you make your empire. It's not a deep game but I found it to be kind of amusing. Of course, I only paid $5 for it...

http://wargamedork.blogspot.com/2015/06/a-little-fun-with-dreamcast.html I had to do a little tribute to the Dreamcast with VGA Box fun. I have entirely too many things I can now do with this silly machine, especially now that I have two models that have just had their RESET OF DOOM issue dealt with for a while. (An hour or so of Daytona is a good enough test right?) Seriously folks. The VGA Box is almost LIFE CHANGING for this machine. I just wished they didn't have all these little nooks and crannies to collect dust and grime and poo poo because cleaning it is a pain. Also the yellowing. I kind of want to try my hand out at repainting one of them so I can have a pretty machine that won't look uggo. I might try with my 5th DC controller since its the one that came with my used machine and is kind of ucky anyhow unlike my two transparent ones and my pair of defaults. Also the thing can be a near LAIN like level of cables and wires and things coming out of it. It can get kind of horrifying and it makes one feel like some Cyberpunk kinda poo poo is happening. (Also get a GOOD HDTV with all the inputs like my Sharp Aquos from 07. HDMI! DVI! S VIDEO! COMPONENT! COMPOSITE! RF!! It has like 8 loving inputs or so on it, maybe more. And like a 6ms lag or something wee like that.)

There was a 360 version of the game made that I was really tempted to pick up when I heard about it, but apparently it doesn't work on US 360s. Just do something with those walls one day. It's...just not becoming of a retro gamer. I'm somewhat poking fun, but honestly think you might be better off with white instead. Even with the lack of RGB inputs, $2 for a display that should have great composite and S-Video quality is an absolute steal for sure! A thrift store find, I take it? As an example of the quality, here's the Samurai Shodown II title screen, taken with my cell phone, over S-Video on my 9" Panasonic monitor: Full sized link. Also, my gallery of snapshots for NES composite quality on my Panasonic. I would expect much the same quality on your monitor; note the edges of sprites and other screen elements. Less garbage, less "rainbow", and so on. Anyhow, great find and prince, and I hope it serves you well.

Me five minutes after starting up Armorines: " I don't see why everyone goes on about how bad this game is. Yeah, it's lovely, but it's lovely in the exact same ways that all FPS games for the N64 and PS1 were." Ten minutes later: "I have everyone who was involved with this game and I hope they all died." Let's jump back a bit here, first. Back in the late-80's Acclaim invested in a comic book company called Valiant. Valiant happened to be in the exact right place at the exact right time to take advantage of the enormous comic book boom of the early 90's and when it became apparent to Acclaim that the editor-in-chief and company founder was more interested in trying to tell cerebral stories than creating properties they could use, they took part in a coalition of investors to oust him. And then they promptly ran the company into the ground right in time for the whole comic book market to collapse like a house of cards. But in 1994, they were still thinking, "Hey, as long as we keep churning out product and put foil covers on it, people will buy it!" And that's where Armorines came from: a cynically made cash grab from a company trying to create brands and franchises they could capitalize on. The book itself is terrible. I only ever read one issue, but it was all the awfulness of that era of comics compressed into one unreadable mess. I wanted to find some examples of it for this post, but the only thing I could find were images from the also bad reboot that happened last year. No one wants to remember the Armorines. The story behind them is they were a military organization with power suits that fought the constant alien invaders of the Valiant Universe, the Spider Aliens. No, they never came up with a better name than that. Here is what the Spider Aliens look like in the comics: And here's what they look like in the video game Armorines: Project S.W.A.R.M.: Which I think proves that Starship Troopers was released while this game was in development. Let me tell you about my first mission. I have to go to Siberia (aka Generic Snow Level), turn on the power at a military base, and find out what happened (hint: it's going to involve aliens and shooting them a lot, something that's discovered in the first second of the game). You spawn on top of a tower and everyone rushes forward to an elevator. Being a savvy gamer, I know that game designers inevitably put things behind the stuff in the first area you appear so I moved to go behind the elevator house. Except I triggered a cut scene when I approached the elevator and was sent onto the next zone. I couldn't turn around and go back, I was stuck in the new area. "I guess I can't go there," I thought, "and there must not be anything important, anyway." I spend about ten minutes exploring the new area which consists of white outdoor areas and pitch black indoor areas. This game is dark. Any indoor environment is next to pitch black. It's not just the first stage, either. It was so dark I thought there had to be some kind of night vision in the game, though I couldn't find the button to activate it. Care to guess where the night vision goggles were? Even once you restart the game and pick them up, they don't help that much. Here's the view with the goggles on: They severely restrict your field of view and everything is still incredibly dark. This, FWIW, is why most of the pictures are from level one. It was much easier to get example shots when there were bright areas. The thing about turning on the power made me waste a ton of time since I assumed I was looking for some way to turn on the lights. Nope, I had to find a guy in one corner of the map and escort him to a place where he turns on a monorail. And by escort, I mean enter the room, watch him take off like a rocket, and then three minutes later get a message that the power was turned on. I couldn't even figure out how to finish the level easily because you had to jump into the exit door. Bad visual design is so common to console first person shooters at this time that it might as well have been called a standard feature, but Armorines: Project S.W.A.R.M. (I am going to type that out because it's just so stupid) elevates it to a whole new level. And then the only tool that helps it a little, they hide in the first ten seconds of the game and if you misstep it's gone. One weird feature of the game is its expansion pack support. There's a "hi-res" mode and a "hi-res letterboxed" mode that can be enabled with the pack. I'll admit it looks better than the lo-res mode, but not by much.

Finally got around to ripping my two TurboGrafx 16 CD games (since I don't own the console and have no other way to play them), and after lots of frustration with the CD audio skipping in game when playing from the image I finally got an acceptable backup. Ripping at higher speeds actually seems to work better, though some of the audio STILL has a few bytes different every time. But since it doesn't skip, time to play some Ys. Maybe Gate of Thunder later when I feel like pulling out a joystick instead of my couch keyboard.

Random Stranger how far did you make it on that game? I own a complete nstc n64 collection and make it a effort to play each game as much as I can. I only made it to a pyramid level in Armorines and it had a bullshit goal that you had to destroy every single egg. However you can leave the level with one egg undestroyed and it fails you. Oh and you probably have no clue where the end of the level is so the first time you will likely fail this.

I still say if you have stomached any Turok games and enjoyed them (I have) you won't absolutely hate Armorines. I haven't beaten it no, but thinking about it is making me want to now. (This is coming from someone who enjoyed the Mission Impossible 64 game by the way. The bathroom level was so much fun!) I haven't gotten the still images I took of Zombie Dinos yet but I did get a chance to upload a video of me playing it for the first time taken with a random flip camera. Ignore me forgetting to hit the right button on my switchbox, ignore me forgetting to have the tv on the correct source, and finally ignore me hitting volume instead of channel. Also let me say again, the Goldstar CD-i's power button is incredibly inconvenient to get to where I have it sitting. I didn't think this game was that great, especially at 1:10, but DAMNNNNNNNNN did it become a hell of a lot cooler around 1:37. I won't spoil what happens, so please check it out yourself.
