Hrm, wow. Unless the perks are great, unless a low int is like -90% exp gain I can't see it being a big focus in a build. Swift Learner perks were never really very good unless you were in some kind of hurry, and now the whole stat is just Swift Learner. You have a game world with infinite XP to draw on.

That's the thing, you are. There's a reason why Obsidian took out the "And the Courier left New Vegas" ending. Not to mention, Lonesome Road is specifically about what your character did before the setting of the game.

That's no different than New Vegas essentially forcing you to walk the long way around to the titular city: to try and get you to feel something for the character/place in question. You can get your average player invested with a familial hook because we all have families and most of us don't hate our parents or something. If anything, NV had to do it more because there's no baseline give-a-poo poo about a fictional city.

New Vegas never forced you to take the long way, they guided you there. They gave you the tools to break that guided path and if you did not use those tools that is entirely your fault.

I think we are assuming a lot on how the Perk system is gonna be, which admittedly is Bethesda's fault since they said nothing about it at the showcase. They should really come clear on it these following months so we known it straight.

So just for my own sake, I stepped through the video to look at the stat descriptions:

quote:

S- carry weight, melee
P- awareness, "sixth sense," accuracy
E- health and action point drain
C- persuasion and prices
I- exp gain rate
A-action points and sneak
L-crit rate recharge, item find

Depending on how certain things work in the game's design, Perception is either going to be super important to actually hitting things or borderline useless, Endurance and Agility will be essential to VATS use, and Luck might just be the best thing in a game about finding garbage to play with.

Sometimes I go as far as Nipton but after that dicking-about-time has begun. You can make it to Vegas any way you want with nothing but a starter pistol if that's what you want to do. Let's be honest each other, with ourselves, with T. Howard: The game needs crotch shots. Like, I realize that somebody out there is spitting out their Ramune and insisting that head shots are the only thing that really "matter" in targeted combat, but the reality is that the best way to shoot somebody is not necessarily the best way to kill them. Unreal Tournament '99 had a community-made mutator that added "crotch shots" and it was always at the top of THE list.

The game also needs targeted melee, predominately for targeted melee crotch shots.

Wait do we have any reason to think the In-game perk tree will be anything like what's on the poster? I was just assuming it was an excuse to show off their art assets, but I suppose it could be linked.

Also, I'm not sure we should be making assumptions on what perks are or aren't there based on the internet's squinting abilities (especially because they might be reusing art for new perks like previous games have). Seems like a recipe for getting things hilariously wrong.

The Poster's supposed to be for "tracking" character progression. So it probably does represent the in-game perk tree.

1. Voiced dialogue isn't a terrible thing by itself, it's just given Bethesda's track record with this kinda thing ("[Intelligence]So, you fight the good fight with your voice on GNR"), not to mention the vauge dialogue wheel is something out of ME not Fallout

2. New Vegas had two (2) NPCs in the entire game that couldn't die and never did the plot become unwinnable

3. It's not as simple as decided back story (every Fallout game has some level of this), it's how much they are forcing. You have to be married, with a kid, 20-30 years old, an affinity for dogs, etc. New Vegas let you be a 70 year old lesbian that has a fetish for explosives, that can't happen in Fallout 4.

You keep getting mad at fairly legitimate complaints.

No, I got all the DLC. Your predefined character in NV has a concrete backstory and the game railroads you into content much more than 3 or previous Fallout games.

Republican Vampire posted:

It doesn't force you. It's harder to make it the other way, but there are more than enough stealth boys and magazines to go a different way.

Sorry, but I reject that. If 10% of it is for e-peen, 90% of that path is to railroad the player into the path that force-feeds you poo poo To Care About. The main railroaded route in NV is an extended version of what Fallout 3 managed to do in the Baby->Toddler->Teenager stuff. The game fails on a story level if you get to Vegas without being told why the city is important, so you actively discourage any other path than one that does so.

Republican Vampire posted:

Finally, you're fundamentally misunderstanding my point. Fallout 3 goes over why you should care and why it's so important over and over again.

No, I understand it, I think you've got 3 and NV backwards in that respect. NV does (and has to) go over how important the Big Groups in question are, because you start with zero fucks about a made up city. 3 doesn't have to do any of that because, ya know, you're told its your character's dad and "your dad left you and you want to find out where he went" is something that works for most people.
