 I'm now one of those guys who installs Doom on his work computer, like that statistic that's always mentioned when anyone talks about Doom's popularity! Got a ton of mods/wads all set to go, too. Showing off Reelism to a co-worker caused him to immediately go and buy Doom from Steam, too. Tomorrow, I'll show him Demonsteele + Going Down.

So, it looks like in Doom 4 not only are weapons getting alternate fires, the alternate fire upgrades you have to find at some point in the campaign like in Wolf:TNO. They showed that the Shotgun gets a 3 shot charge burst, and the machinegun is getting a missile launcher. I wonder what the other guns are going to get.

There's a few incredibly worrying things in there ("when people play doom, they want to jam a guy's face into the floor, tear 'em up with the chainsaw"  ), but there's a couple interesting factoids in there.I'm genuinely interested in the idea of "push forward combat", rewarding players for being aggressive and jumping from one enemy to the next instead of retreating away and trying to recover. I think there's some potential to be had there, even if enemies as health pinatas is kind of...eehhh.

I played through all of No Rest for the Living, Final Fantasy (three times*), Torchlight, Pokémons White and Red, Quake and its expansions, and a lot of TrackMania while at work. The secret is to be a salaried grad student who studies animal behavior. You need something you do when your critters don't feel like working. *original NES version once and BlackBerry remake version twice, which took like 18 months because I only played it in the bus and during poop breaks.

Lets get something out the way, Hell in Doom 4 looks like complete poo poo. Hell in doom needs to be 90s loving Satanic. Goats heads, upside down fuckin' crosses. Also sort the plasma gun and shotgun out. Sgtmark may be a dickhead with terrible opinions but some of the gunplay looks shockingly unsatisfying.

I hope they don't forget that stuff  Sure, it has terrible gameplay and required secrets and Sandy Petersen, but that level *was* the Hell episode to me. You got to traverse lakes of acidic blood, avoid death traps in giant intestine rooms and see a bunch of torn corpses hanging over pools of slime through windows! It was legitimately creepy when I first played through it. Or maybe we'll have Generic Red Corridors to contrast with the early game's Generic Grey Corridors, but one can hope.

This is probably the best way to explain my issues with what they've shown so far. It's just not weird enough. I think there's a part when you take the elevator down to the cyberdemon (who should really be composed of diesel machines not future tech) in Doom 3 and there's a twitching upside down corpse impaled in the wall or something and it actually felt like a "Doom" moment. I was listening to a movie podcast a while ago where they pointed out how, for about the last decade, pop culture has determined that the scariest thing a monster can be is feral. All these unique movie monsters are slowly turning into the same snarling, ripped, wild-eyed, uncoordinated humanoid. That's not entirely the case here but, dammit, I miss my goat heads

Barlowe in particular gets really deep into his own fictional Hell world, he details buildings and social systems and different species living in hell and all KINDS of loving brilliant wicked evil alien satanic poo poo. I mean loving look at this:  But of course we can't have anything nearly that artistic in commercial videogames. Although, I think Dark Souls took some clear inspiration from Beksinki and may be part of what makes Dark Souls so creepy and unique and cool. It doesn't have to be evocative Beksinki poo poo but one of the simpler things that many of those paintings understand far better than Doom 4 is color contrast. You don't have everything tinted brown.  Bright blues and reds on grey. It pops.
