I'm enjoying the US Cruiser line, currently working on unlocking the Cleveland, and I'm wondering how effective the AA modifications are? I had a game where our carriers went full torpedo/dive bomber and someone (me) had to escort them and protect them from the big bad Everything (I shot down some planes and eventually went down to a pack of destroyers but whatever I was a speed bump par excellence and we won.) With that experience in mind, would specializing my mods for AA work be effective? Losing the torpedoes next tier seems like it would make a defensive escort focus more appealing, but I don't really know how things actually play out when Yamatos and Essexes are wrecking house.

Don't grind too hard, apparently Wargaming were telling people at E3 that the open beta soft launch is coming end of June, likely with 0.4.0 going live on the servers. Which makes some sense, given there's no real reason we should be jumping from 0.3.1 to 0.4.0 unless they want a nice round number to launch with.

Also they had an E3 party, with a Sherman called 'Hangover' parked out the front. Photos look like every CCP party I've ever been to.

While AA mods and skills greatly improve AA, I wouldn't bother with escorting in public game unless said pubbie actually commits to pushing. Otherwise it's waste of time and you don't get much xp out of escorting.

To be honest it's a blessing when you lose the torpedoes. The damage isn't honestly going to be worth it to get close enough to land a decent salvo. The Cleaveland is an excellent ship, one of the funnest to play in my opinion. While it's guns don't match up to the Tier 6 Japanese Crusier in size it does have a poo poo load of them and it can traverse/fire them very quickly. Having said that I still think it's worth it to spend your mods on AA improvement when you can. You have a poo poo load of AA guns and escorting a battleship will get you quite a bit of take downs on planes.

Above all though you are a absolute nightmares for destroyers. With your speed, traverse, reload and amount of guns any destroyer who gets in your range is going to wish they didn't very quickly. Cleveland is very good at dodging lazy torp patterns and can even take a few torp hits and still keep on shooting. Normally I try to stay with the smaller pack of my team or that one battleship that loves to flank the entire map. Destroyers love hunting these guys down so you have your pick of engagements. Use your range to your advantage and don't be afraid to fire your guns sequentially. If you time it right you can almost get a constant stream of fire going. Good luck using your speed Mr. Destroyer when I never stop firing.

...on the plus side I'm feeling much more angry now than I expected so this totally helps me get in character.
The best Cleveland trick I can recommend is swapping to AP when you're within approx 5km of ships you think you can pen (cruisers, mostly). I took on a New Orleans from full and sunk him with 5 consecutive citadels while only losing about 2/5 of my health to his HE spam.

Otherwise, just maximize shooting time and minimize getting shot at time.

Other news for 0.4: Atago (Takao-class) will be introduced as a T8 premium IJN cruiser. And firing your guns now creates shockwaves churning the water next to your ship.

Aesis posted:

+15% turret traverse speed and +10% reload time, so it lets you rotate turret faster at the cost of extra reload time. I just don't see any use for it apart from maybe Yamato, because that would cut its turret traverse time from 72 to 61.2 seconds at the cost of 3 seconds extra reload time.

That upgrade or aiming expertise is pretty drat near mandatory if you want to use the Yamato at distances below 20km. I'd go with Aiming Expertise over it, though because two points on your captain is pretty affordable and it's actually more effective, bringing the turret rotation down to ~56 seconds.

Shop around for doctors! Always fucking shop for doctors. Doctors are stupid assholes. And they get by because people are cowed by their mystical bullshit quality of being able to maintain a 3.0 GPA at some Guatemalan medical college for 3 semesters. Find one that makes sense.
My second Cleveland game just now, we randomly had a tier 9 Iowa and the other team had a tier 8 Japanese Carrier. I stayed near the Iowa and even though I died about halfway through, my after action report said I had shot down 10 dive bombers and 10 torpedo bombers. At one point, a torp squad was going to fly over me on its way to hit the Iowa, I clicked on the planes to target them and activated my cruiser special ability. Shot down 4 of them before they could launch. Of course, our Iowa was terrible, but still.

I have not played destroy very much, in a Minekaze, I just hit a BB with 1 torp for 42k damage, sinking him.

He was the second BB I took down. I'm assuming that I must have hit something important, I have a x2 devastating strike. Netted me 10k exp.

86k damage on 6 hits.

Torp probably hit a magazine under a turret, yeah.

I was going to get back onto the test server to take a closer look at the new captain skill layout, but there was a 997 person queue. The downside of putting EU, RU, and US on the same server.

The beta is not opened yet. The patch that will probably be open beta is available on the test server. Closed beta is still running on the regular server.

Confirming this. Holy poo poo, my first match in the Cleveland I ran into a destroyer and mauled it with the first go of my guns. Pretty pleased with the AA too, my AA guns were chattering away and brought down about a squadron while I was covering our battleships.

When does AP on BB's start becoming the go to ammo? I'm at tier 4 American BB's now and it just feels better to always shoot HE.
Once you hit tier 5 you'll get 14-inch guns, which you can get away with using AP on everything for the most part. There's going to be a deadzone around 11-13km where the angle is shallow enough you'll have a hard time penning the deck but steep enough to have issues punching through the belt, but for the most part I just shot AP at everything and hosed them up, and this was before both the AP buffs.

gently caress AP, HE's the go to ammo for BB. Getting tired of 0 citadel crit with AP while enemy BB shooting HE not only takes huge chunks of hp off but set fire + knock stuff out.

e: Still, doing 13k damage from AP shell is satisfying :unsmith:

Do not fire HE from battleships, you are gimping yourself and your team. Learn to aim with AP instead.

Nah I'm just ranting because I'm butt mad about ocean ship game :v: tbh shooting AP is like gambling, except it pays off big when you do max damage.

e: Do shoot HE against DD though. Otherwise shoot AP and hope for the best as AP and HE + fire do roughly the same damage per shot without crit hits.

That's an... interesting choice for a premium. You'd think they'd either go for the name ship, unless they plan to make part of a separate standard branch at some later point, or Maya, which had a significant conversion done to it mid-war. Cannot find anything particularly exceptional or unique about Atago.

It seems to be a Tier 7 cruiser with Tier 8 torps.

From what I've seen, it's a tougher Myoko with T8 torps and better torp angles than other IJN heavy cruisers. Mogami still has a better turret layout and is more manueverable, though.

Dunno if it goes below 25x, I haven't played any ship more than one or two matches before getting the next.
