If you live in NZ you can get a good pie anywhere at almost any time, even some of the frozen then reheated at a servo pies are good. There's no reason to have a bad pie in NZ.

I think I've said this before in this thread but Japan and Korea kinda put whatever the hell they want on pizza because they figure that whatever heinous pizza war crimes they commit the Americans have probably done worse. My Korean friends asked me what pizza was like here and they were very surprised to hear that "super supreme, with stuffed crust" is about as extravagant as things get for the big chains.

Pão de queijo is a cheese bread/puff sold throughout Brazil, where the World Cup is hosted this year. This pizza is a tribute to both food items — grilled steak and vegetables are topped with something called "snow cheese" (a combination of shredded mozzarella, cheddar and gouda) with puff-like pastries lining the perimeter. In the photo there’s a large pot of melted cheese that will presumably be dumped over the pie at some point. Upper-class people will probably dunk, not pour, I assume.

They're terrible, and terrible for you, but goddamn if I don't buy one every time we go on road trips. I grew up with meat pies (crawfish) and they are some of the best food I've ever had to this day. One of the first things I did when I got my drivers license was shoot across the border to Louisiana and get fried crawfish pies from Natchitoches. For anti-food porn content, enjoy some bat paste soup. The bat is boiled alive for this.

Yeah, pot pies are plentiful but they have to be baked and cooled and they're fairly big, so it's kind of a production to eat one; none of this "grab it in one hand and eat it while driving" stuff I gather is the norm in the Commonwealth.

They're mostly of the "pocket pie" variety instead of the kind more common in the UK and Australia. Aside from being able to buy them frozen in any grocery store, you could find them in almost any gas station that served hot food beyond just hot dogs. You also see them labelled as "empanadas" though those are usually a slightly different recipe. Same idea though and they're drat good eatin'! Like all of America's perceived culinary problems, I blame the Midwest. Danger Mahoney posted:I grew up with meat pies (crawfish) and they are some of the best food I've ever had to this day. That's still not an Australian-style meat pie though. Not just the shape, the filling looks way too dry - and are those vegetables of some kind? This is what they're supposed to be like: (although it is not necessary to draw a picture of Australia on top with the sauce)

That is not a proper meat pie - not in the Aussie sense, anyway. Like Tiggum says, the shape is wrong, as is the look of the filling. It looks like a perfectly acceptable meat pasty but not a pie. Incidentally, we do other things than just beef in our pies. Some of the best involve peas and potato, curry, or bacon as well as the steak. Good steak and kidney is also popular, and there's a bakery near me that does a nice pie with beef, bacon, and actual cheddar beneath the lid that is delicious, if fattening as hell. Peppersteak is also really popular as a pie, but it's normally just a conventional beef filling with a ton of black pepper mixed through - delicious, but not the same as some of the 'steak' pies which are a bit 'chunkier'.
