I think he tip-toed around it enough. He brought up an indisputable lovely thing(online harassment) and mentioned some people who can probably write a lifetime of books on being harassed and put down "Professional Victims" in their resumes at this point. If the GG people are going to get up in arms over it, just relax and enjoy all of their whiny arm flailing.

I've already been told to shut up for telling a dude complaining about getting weekly death threats (but doesn't make a big deal about it because he's not a "professional victim") that he shouldn't be getting death threats either.

Hej min vän, hur står det till?
I like the fact that they take issue with his statement that white dudes don't get harassed nearly as much or not with the same level of threat. It's pretty common knowledge that many women online face higher amounts of threats than many other groups, and since they are often already targeted in real life every day (with society then blaming them for being attacked by calling them sluts or asking them why they brought it upon themselves by wearing the 'wrong' clothing), these threats are much more scary. The average white dude can be spammed hate messages online, but because he typically doesn't face daily dangers they have the privilege of being able to just laugh it off as nothing. They might bring out individual cases of severe harassment, but those are statistical outliers in comparison.

Basically it's a lot of "he said white men don't get harassed but someone once made fun of me so he's the real bigot here!".

The most common theme is "THE STAFF DIDN'T DO THEIR RESEARCH", as if looking more into the shitheap that is the MRA/Gamergate movement is going to result in people being more sympathetic to them.

The other one is "I'm not saying she deserves it, but she's a liar/scam artist/tranny/professional victim so she should expect bomb threats and SWATing."

This has consistently been my favorite part of this whole goddamn narrative of the online harassers, from Stormfront to Gamergate: if only they knew. If someone who doesn't fit your profile of a target thinks you're an rear end in a top hat, clearly they have been fooled by the vast global conspiracy to make you look like an rear end in a top hat.

Yeah, it does, doesn't it? I'm not au fait with reddit slang, so when I read those screens on the previous page... "its a chance to redpill him too" in particular was equally undecipherable and hilarious for what my mind told me it should mean (as opposed to what it apparently does).

It's fascinating that they don't turn the harassment against Oliver himself, though. Either white penis powers indeed or his protected status as an Internet darling... Or maybe it's still too early?

That's the thing, to justify themselves they have rationalized threatening to kill and rape women as a natural reaction to the injustices that men have suffered at the hands of the diabolical feminist. John Oliver is not the enemy, he's a prisoner of war with Stockholm Syndrome, or at best a useful idiot for the evil social justice warrior.

He won't be victimized because the majority of these MRA types actually see him as a sympathetic victim.

My favorite comments whenever gamegate is uttered in any thread are the ones who are just above it all and not invested in any side. "I''m laughing at everyone, really, but people who talk about death threats should probably shut up the most. i'm reasonable and impartial and these women complaining about harassment are exactly as laughable as the people who do the harassing or go around saying 'actually it's about ethics in games journalism' unironically. I'm just real tired of the whole argument, and the status quo of women being doxxed and a perpetual gender based pogrom is fine with me"

One thing that I feel the show missed is how the Internet turns jurisdictions into nightmares. California may have an anti-harassment law, but if Joe Q. Gamergate is in Florida and the server is in New York then the California law doesn't mean jack poo poo when he goes after a woman there. Even federal laws won't help because, as is often missed by people trying to put regulations on Internet activity often learn, the Internet is worldwide.

Which isn't to say that people should just throw their hands up and give up; Federal laws will help some. It's just that there isn't a solution to this short of people deciding to not use effectively anonymous, effortless tools of harassment.

Just because she's a potentially lovely human being doesn't detract from the fact that no one deserves to be treated like she, and numerous others, have. In that regard, there is very rarely a 'bad face' you can bring forward.

I mean she does stuff like marginalize other women in her industry and argue that women can just become developers via bootstrap-pulling and don't need to go to college, like she did when she literally received one hundred thousand dollars from her insanely rich parents to start a business

At a certain point if you're positioning yourself as the face of female advancement in a sexist industry but argue against all the ways that women that aren't privileged can advance you're a loving rear end in a top hat

Not a gamergater(?) or redpiller(?) or whatever they call themselves but that episode was poo poo. There are just as many sites out there for revenge porn or anonymously posting poo poo about men as there are women.

He should've stuck with a neutral "this is how lovely the internet is" theme instead of "this is how lovely the internet is for women and only women" implication.

Here's the problem with that though- you give the wrong sort of people any excuse to pile on the poo poo, and they'll apply it to ANY of their targets, not just the ones who can be criticized for it.

It's like the give an inch take a mile but applied to being lovely human beings. Also none of this gives anyone the right to make death threats to her or be as lovely or even worse as she is. Thankfully she is also not the only face nor the only person John brought up!

I don't know if you're saying that yourself or just saying that's what's said but it isn't true, there have been several websites run by women there were the exact same thing, Don't Date Him Girl was one of them for years where the owner was a convicted felon and she refused court orders to take down or provide information on orders of who posted what, and after years of the current swimming against her she swerved the site into a "women's empowerment" motif which made it beyond reproach and is still up to this day.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DontDateHimGirl.com

ed: I'm only referring to online harassment generally, which is what half his segment was on, not the other half of posting nudes. I'll readily accept that men might do that more than women (even though there are women's sites to do that too).

Why yes there are over 7 billion people on the planet many of them woman, some of those are lovely people. This of course is in no way evidence that a solid majority of internet harassment happens to women.

Glanced to the left and was surprised this post wasn't by Irish Joe.

Not even close. Yes there are sites that shame men, but not even close to the amount against women. John said himself that men are victims too, but not nearly at the rate of women. There are not as many sites for men as women. Not 50/50, not even close.
