You guys know they merged the Windows and Devices businesses into one division, right? If they kill phone hardware then Windows 10 Mobile is dead too. Cortana would have to be reinvented to only work in whatever sandboxed mobile context other platforms would allow, too.

It would suck if the 940 and 940XL get cancelled but an iPhone 6 with all the Apple services replaced with Outlook / Skype / OneNote / XBox Music would be a pretty nice phone for me apart from the lack of Live Tiles.
There's also scuttlebutt of a write-off of the Nokia acquisition, accompanied with rumors of quitting manufacturing phones. Hope that turns out false, because based on rumors, it doesn't seem like anyone's up for new Windows phones.

The write-off just means that they think the acquisition won't make as much money as it cost, though, right? I can see how that would lead to those rumors, but it also just makes sense that they'd do it to close off the fiscal year. I think, I'm no expert on corporate finance.

Something like that. It was valued at say $100 and they paid $125, so the accounting difference (goodwill) was $25. That 25 might decrease to 0, but it isn't a change in cash, and Microsoft's stock has apparently done well enough not too many people care that much.

In any case, wp10 has taken too long if you ask me, with limited information about new handsets etc. Even if windows 10 comes out in December, what's to say it won't be a mess and will take 6 months to fix? I'd hate to drop an upgrade on a new wp10 flagship and then it suck or be buggy, when I could get an iPhone honestly.

If they're not going to make phones then an awful lot of completed and ongoing projects are completely in vain and Windows 10 Mobile might as well not exist. I know Microsoft has killed big efforts before (i.e. WinRT once Intel got their low-power hardware in order) but I don't see how "Mobile first, Cloud first" or whatever makes sense without a mobile OS. Even with Windows' current mobile market share I can't see them giving up and becoming an iOS software vendor or trying to make their own fork of Android. Blackberry hasn't given up on hardware yet so I don't understand why it would be unaffordable to Microsoft.

You mean Windows RT. WinRT is a platform to build apps on (Windows 8, 8.1, and WinPhone 8.1. As well as Windows 10 UAP apps), and it's alive and well.

This is 100% compatible with making apps for Android and iOS. How does it make more sense to burn tons of money on a mobile OS that no one uses, when they could instead rope people into their services on platforms that people do actually use? They've already put Office and just about every other essential Microsoft app on Android and iOS. The writing's on the wall

Analysts are people who failed as traders and now make random predictions as a strange kind of marketing for their bank, and a write-off is a book-keeping matter bearing minimal relation to actual product strategy. Don't worry too much about this stuff.

That's just good strategy for selling more Office 365 / XBox Music subscriptions and Skype minutes. If Apple cared about service market share they'd do the same thing, but now if I were to buy an iDevice I could avoid using any of their services because Microsoft's are superior and cross-platform.

Former demo 925 arrived today. It's flawless. So far I couldn't be happier. Best $55 phone I've ever owned. Only issue was I had to adjust the color, was a bit yellow. I'm not really using it yet, still applying updates.

Any known issues with Lumia connecting to 5Ghz wifi? My 925 will not connect to my 5Ghz, works on 2.4 just fine. It just gives me an error message that it can't connect. Password and security for both are the same, SSIDs are different.
edit; I just rebooted my phone and now the 5Ghz network doesn't show up at all.

So, for fun, I decided to update my 635 to the 10 preview. 4 hours later, it finished.

The entire phone is broken. Non-responsive to taps, blurry text, janky everything. Clicking on a app to install on the store instantly closes the store and boots you back to the home screen.

Good thing it's a $29 wifi toy. Man, I sure hope Microsoft has some tricks up it's sleeve before the final release this fall

I realize the 635 is an absolute dog with the processor and 512mb RAM, but the DP completely fucks this device beyond recognition. It's kind of funny, actually.

?? I've been using win10 on my daily driver Nokia635 for over a month now. I've found it okays, especially now with 10136. Certainly no blurry text, and it always responds to taps (although slowly when launching apps). Edge crashes too much, and the Store Beta crashes sometimes, but other than those I haven't noticed "jankiness".

One key thing I did, after installing 10136, was to do a factory reset - wipe everything on the phone and start 10136 from scratch.

Oh, and it took a further half day for all the apps (including Outlook and Tore Beta) to be installed and updated. I guess 10136 comes with already-outdated versions of lots of its key apps.

My 1020 has been dropped one too many times, so I think I'll be joining the ranks of people in this thread with cheap 925s. That is, unless there's a cheaper WP with more than 8gb of storage, a front-facing camera, and a physical camera button. I was also considering a 920, but truth be told I don't have many apps even on my 1020 and I'm not sure that the wireless charging is worth the additional bulk and weight; thoughts?

I think the last of the "new" lumias with a physical camera button is the 830 (or the older but more powerful and expensive 930). So yes, your only cheap option is a 925 wich is a pretty drat nice device.

Actually I can't find a 925 with 32GB of storage (a requirement for me) so it looks like my options are (a) continuing to deal with my 920 or (b) paying $350 for a 930. WELP

Would buying a refurb 920 solve my issues? It's still a good phone, the hardware is just noticeably suffering from wear and tear.

Not sure if this is relevant to your problem but have you tried using a pin to dig lint out of the headphone jack? If you carry it in a pocket all the time it will accumulate at the bottom and using an air duster doesn't work.

This is the 925 I bought:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOKIA-LUMIA...pid%3D100102%26

Seller also had auctions going but they were getting bid up to $65-70 all the while he was selling them for $55 BIN. He also has some for $75, $80, and $100, BIN. Maybe there is some subtle difference I'm not seeing but they are all 16gb 925's. They also have 810's for $45.

Thanks for the link. I looked at a couple <$50 925s and there are some with really awful burn in (edit: I'm so used to only doing buy it now things on eBay, I didn't even realize they were active auctions and that's why the prices were different, haha). They're totally upfront about it and show clear pictures so you can see how bad or not bad it is, though. Looks like a great seller to check if you want a cheap WP though :)
