Somewhere in Time has possibly my favorite production values out of any Maiden album. Those double kicks by Nicko are the best ever.

Virtual XI isnt that bad and X Factor isnt that good; I'd say they are both hit and miss. Anyway, Final Frontier is the only album that I didn't like at all.

I hate everything about them: the stupid "operatic" vocals; the lovely, outdated, high-pitched guitar tones, the cheesy "epic" lyrics. Ugh they're so lame. That first album with "Prowler" and "Phantom of the Opera" on really was awesome though

The new Abyssal is out and it's fully sick: https://abyssal-home.bandcamp.com/ Their last album would've been AOTY 2013, IMO, were it not for the release of new material by Grave Miasma, Ulcerate, and Gorguts.

I think it's a clumsy way of referring to it as "dated," which is a pretty common criticism of a lot of music, especially from the 80s.

Ex-Priest Tobin posted:I've always tried to like Iron Maiden but I think must be the only metal fan who can't stand the sound of Bruce Dickinson's voice? It's just so shrill and irritating that I can barely listen through one of their albums. Same. I don't like Dio or Judas Priest or any of that stuff either for the same reason. King Diamond is pretty sweet though

A human heart posted:How does a guitar tone become 'outdated'? I dunno, I think it's possible to criticize an album for having dated production, or a guitar tone that hearkens back uncomfortably to certain trends (such as the scooped-mids Pantera tone that was all the rage mid-90s). I just don't think those criticisms apply to Maiden.

Maiden has great production. You can actually hear the instruments and playing dynamics and they understand managing sonic space. The worst thing about 99% of modern metal is the horrible production.

The new black dahlia murder song is pretty sick: http://www.metalsucks.net/2015/06/24/the-black-dahlia-murder-vlad-son-of-the-dragon/ I know a lot of people hate them, particularly the vocals, but metal vocals are always bad anyway so who cares.

Actually, metal vocals are quite often good. They shouldn't make or break a band for you though.

So, speaking of Morbid Angel, I'm pretty sure Formulas Fatal to the Flesh is my favorite album of theirs, after much listening and pondering. Am I alone in my enjoyment? Before this month I'd always kinda skipped over them for some reason, and remedied that, and FFTTF if loving brutal. Love the overall sound and feel.
