YOUR LIPS SAY 0, BUT YOUR EYES SAY 1.

Good Evening fellow Goons.

I am a long time gamer and, after a previously aborted attempt a few years ago, I find myself wanting to give Eve a fair test run. My questions to vets are as follows:

1. Is it even worthwhile, after the game has been around for so long, getting started as a noob now? Surely I'll just get rolled by every sperglord that's been playing for 5 years.
2. Will I ever be able to live a life outside of the game again? Part of my reason for avoiding games like this is that it has the potential of being a time suck.
3. Who has a good "Not loving yourself in the first few hours" guide? I have the ADD, and if I find myself sideways, I will likely lose interest. FML.

Thank you for your Goony time.

1. yes
2. yes
3. do the tutorials, pod yourself to goonspace, read the goonwiki, talk with goons, get in fleets.

Having now played for a year, my strongest recommendation would be to plan to just PvP for the first year and as you learn the game and get more comfortable with what is involved with what other paths that might appeal to you will become apparent

This is a huge misconception about eve. Ship match ups are rock-paper-scissor. Plus there is a max amount of skill points that can apply to any one ship. Spending 4 months training battleship V skills or months training jump drive skills does nothing to improve your tech1 frigate ability. Sure you won't be good at as many ships as someone playing for 10 years, but you can certainly be as good or better within two months using a focused skill plan targeting a specific niche.

No. The nature of skills means that someone who has played for 10 years has access to a greater breadth of ships, not depth. It is entirely possible for a 6 month old player to have as much applicable skill points in a specific ship as someone who has played for 10 years. The older player has no mechanical advantage.

You will still get your rear end beaten though but that's because like any other game, experience and practice are an advantage. There are however, numerous instances of day 1 players holding down much older players in their free frigate and generating a wellspring of rage and tears as the older player's very expensive ship gets nuked by the newbie ' s friends. That newbie then gets showered in money for being a hero.

It can suck as much time as you let it. Passive skill gain means you can walk away for 6 months and come back to a character able to fly a lot of things.

Alternatively you can spend every night exploring different mechanics or tinkering with your own projects. A lot of people spend more time chatting in jabber than they do actually shooting spaceships.

Phone posting so I can't help much here except to say:

Don't do mining.
Get out of highsec as fast as possible.

Though strictly speaking, you can't gently caress yourself as no skillpoints are truly wasted.

You'll be at a disadvantage at first, but the thing with EVE is that after a certain point there is no more vertical progression, you just get access to more roles on the same character. Also, the way combat and skills work it's almost always better to have two people doing the same job (for redundancy, or to cover more ground, or just because it's more DPS) than one highly skilled person; there are some things a newbie can't do well, and some you won't be able to do at all unless you prioritize specific skills, but there is no situation where you're a liability.

The reveal that Brave SRP is all being paid for by some guy who won trillions from iwantisk is interesting. That explains a lot of things about why they don't care about moons or territory defense, or more generally have any willpower to fight and improve themselves. Idunno, I think that they're throwing around "charges" of "treason" now is pretty funny. BNI's odd mix of "not serious at all" and "way too goddamn serious" makes me laugh, and they have combined the two in the least useful way.
