This idea of common courtesy is my central feeling on the issue. It's 2015, and people have to understand that there are many way media is consumed, and we're not all watching at the same time as you. So, it's really inconsiderate of others to go on social media and write about the last three minutes of the show they just watched. I live in Asia, so it's really impossible for me to watch something at the same time it airs. I'm working when other people are watching GoT, for example. That said, about every surprising story beat was spoiled for me in GoT this year because people cannot keep their drat mouths shut. Usually it was Facebook, but it was also the headline of an article a couple times. I often browse social media for work or don't even think about it when I tap on the Twitter or Facebook icon on my phone. It's hard for me to just avoid it, as some people suggest. Did it ruin the show? Of course not. Did it change the experience? Yes, and I would have preferred to have been allowed to watch the show as I like. I don't get so upset any more because I've become quite jaded about this stuff, but come on, guys, have a little courtesy for other people. I don't go up to people and say everything that comes to mind because some things are inappropriate to say. And the debate about whether or not spoilers even matter is meaningless. Who are you to decide how I can enjoy my movie or show? Get off it. Whale Vomit fucked around with this message at 01:11 on Jun 22, 2015 |

Hitchcock hated spoilers. When Psycho hit theatres, posters made it clear that nobody would be let in once the movie started(*). Hitchcock also asked the public to "talk but don't tell" about Psycho. That's not all though: he also tried to buy every copy of the paperback book so that people wouldn't get spoiled by the book. Hitchcock was hardcore about no spoilers. (*) people used to walk into theatres whenever back in the day -- your admission was to the theatre itself, so people would sometimes come in part way through a film and stay for the rest or stay for the rest and then watch it again or part of it again, probably interspersed with newsreels and such.

I'm *whatever* about spoilers but I generally prefer to go into watching or experiencing something with as little knowledge as possible. That's just me! Some people like knowing casting decisions and all that junk, that's cool too. Some stuff is just not gonna be avoidable if you spend time on the Internet or engaged in media, like, there's nobody on this forum who doesn't know what Batman is, as a character or a premise. But, yeah! Surprise is fun, watching something not knowing what to expect, that's fun! I like having fun!

There's a difference between simply wanting to discuss something you've seen freely, which is reasonable (though it's also reasonable to warn people in advance that you're going to do so), and deliberately spoiling people for the express purpose of upsetting them, which is pathetic.

I get trolling and yeah it can be funny and all, but I don't get why some people can't just keep their mouths shut, like the dickheads who run the imdb social media feeds who've spoiled two shows in the last year. One when a character died in Walking Dead before it could air on the otherside of the US and again this week just gone when they put up a picture of a game of thrones Character who had died. What the hell was the point? Bane breaking batman and throwing him into prison and his re-birth was spoiled in some discussion completely unrelated to the movie I read a day after it's international release. Just a casual line about "well if batman can have his back repaired with some ropes, climb out of prison and re-take gotham..." It didn't really ruin the movie, but it was a little frustrating to have something that was supposed to give a little suspense to the narrative ruined because some idiot thinks oh I know what happens gently caress everyone else. Snape kills dumbledore was funny enough and didn't affect anything because it was heavily foreshadowed at the start of the book that dumbledore was hosed and didn't impact the overall story much at all even when you knew dumbledore wasn't going to die that wasn't the main point of the book. If I click on a thread in here about a movie a week after it's release I'm dumb enough for getting spoiled, if I'm reading at article on boxing or something and it gets spoiled two days after its released though I'm gonna be a bit annoyed. Even small throwaway spoilers can ruin a movie or tv series. You can still enjoy it yeah, but why do it. Unless your goal is to ruin something for people which whatever, I get it your a sad neglected man child who is just looking for attention, but casually dropping spoilers in stuff un-related to the movie or show and then getting defensive about it is something I don't understand.

I managed to see From Dusk Till Dawn like a decade after it came out without having known a single thing about it. I don't know how I managed that, but if you had paused that movie about these crime brothers that have taken a family hostage and are trying to escape to Mexico 2/3rds into its run-time and gave me a thousand guesses as to what the gently caress was going to happen next I don't think I would've gotten it right. Would my level of enjoyment of the film changed if I had known what it was about beforehand? I don't know that question isn't really answerable. But I think the experience would have absolutely changed, and while I can always go back and have that experience where I do know what's going to happen I can never go back and have the experience again where I don't, and that's certainly something that can be lost with spoilers.

Yea, I've seen plenty of posts where people argue that they have all kinds of varying levels of enjoyment/surprise/tension/fear with or without spoilers, but I haven't seen anyone refute the idea that the two experiences are fundamentally different. By purposely spoiling something you are going out of your way to deny someone that experience, regardless of what value you personally feel it has. Spoilers are about control. I can't think of a case either where they have ever outright ruined a thing either, but if someone spoils something for you then that's out of your hands, it removes your own ability to approach something with your own expectations and you can never be sure if you would have had a different reaction if you went in unspoiled. It's only going to be a problem for some people, but when it is a problem, it's an extreme annoyance. Like I said, it's not gonna ruin anything entirely, but at worst it can be incredibly distracting to watch a film, and constantly just wanting the spoiled thing to come up so your mind can actually get over it and focus on taking in the film on your own terms. That's the thing, spoilers are just annoying as gently caress and change your first viewing experience. People make such a big deal out of them because they only really happen when other people impose them on you, it's a simple matter of courtesy.
