taxis, other forms of transit, mass or otherwise, and the fact that, by virtue of urban sprawl, goods must be trucked vastly longer distances and in larger quantities to arrive in urban areas to be made available, as well as waste and other necessities being trucked back out farther distances and in larger quantities

trains are super great and we need more of them, but they do not completely remove the need for gasoline for a variety of applications

wait i thought we were contrasting "dense / urban living" with "suburbs / urban sprawl" not like, "the country."

i mean of course if you live closer to farms in a heavily agricultural state/country you can get food over shorter distances and that would be better for the environment but s'burbs aren't that much more likely to be near farms if the city itself isn't near farms.

suburbs are closer to farms by definition, they are not in urban centers, goods have to move through those suburban areas to reach urban areas

and lol at ports being a source of transit for all but a miniscule fraction of goods in a tiny minority of cities

sure, there are a few port cities that may distribute containers of chinese electronics more efficiently to the local populace but that doesn't really offset any of the other costs of urban life

yes, and by not being in a city, they are, by definition, closer to rural areas than the city, since they are not in that city

otherwise i'd love to see these proposed cities that suddenly stop and abut a cornfield or something

that requires all suburbs to lead into farmland when (on the east coast at least) there are many areas where it's just a sprawling mess of suburbs with no farmland in sight. it's not like cities are laid out with nice little rings of suburbs around them and then quaint farms just beyond that

then i'm not sure what you're arguing here since rural areas must, by definition, exist outside of suburbs and suburban areas must, by definition, exist outside of cities

this is why the concept of "urban farming" exists, to try and ameliorate supply issues that exist in urban living

urban farming is a hilarious pipe dream, however, but it is an acknowledgement of the problems of urban dwelling

You guys sure do know a lot about pop-radical leftist garbage!

The food supply needs some federal policy changes before we can even muck with details. Sugar price floors need to get the gently caress out of my country. Corn subsidies need to get the gently caress out of my country, especially ethanol subsidies. Maybe if we make end consumers see the real costs of conventional agriculture, organic, small-hold farms can get a real economic foothold instead of having to rely on trickles down from the NRDC and rich fucks with the kind of disposable income, education, and access to spend $5 on bunches of curly kale. Maybe when we balance some of the gross inequity, then those dirty capitalists can worry about tightening up the efficiency of local systems, but as things stand, there is no way to compete directly with conventional industrialized agriculture, no matter what, because they have become fat loving pigs that suck from both sides of the federal teat.

this is about noisebridge not stupid urban planning discussion

we have an option to establish easy to use ACH donations / dues payments
on donate.noisebridge.net, but before I do was hoping folks could give
feedback as to whether this would be useful for them.

also of note: the fees we'd pay on the transfers would also be lower
than using a credit card.

if this is something that'd be useful to you please do let me know. if a
bunch of folks get back to me saying they'd like this then I'll do it
sooner rather than later :)

My $0.02 input:

ACH is horrifying, so if the service used for this kept us from having to do
any security around PCI or KYC, that'd be perfect

This would be really good for the 3 or so folks who have a bank account but
(mysteriously) don't have a debit card

I'd use it since then I wouldn't have to worry about updating my card details
when new cards are reissued or my existing one is stolen by roving gangs of
libertarians or government thugs

Good for large sum corporate donations

Hella cheaper, especially for recurring payments that can go on for years

If this could be used to convert paper checks into e-checks that'd be one less
reason to hit up the bank

ACH is instant, so we'd have money in our account sooner, but I don't think
the lag between "someone agreed to give us money" and "their money is
available for us to spend" (aka settlement) is a pressing concern despite
being broke.

Pulling up my ACH credentials is a bear but usually only happens once and I
never have to worry about it for the next few years.

+1 for ACH, but then again it sounds like you'll be the one implementing it

I think this would come after adding "user accounts" or some such
functionality to the donations site such that you can actually see your
recurring donations / alter / cancel them. This would cover any KCY
stuff. (what I have in mind is v. basic, so not much work)

We wouldn't need to deal with any PCI concerns, it's similar to the
setup we have currently to accept CC donations.

So far a few folks have said it'd be useful, so I guess the plan is
a) add some form of identification / authentication
b) add ACH support

my old hackerspace had some funny drama come up

quote:

[person],

Stop loving with proposals.

Stop intentionally trying to insult me because i disagree with you. Children thow insults, you are an adult; act like one.

Stop being so drat intolerant. They way you are acting is very disrespectful to everyone and inciting conflict. We are in Canada, you should act like a Canadian.

Stop violating the principles of unity intentionally. They are their for a reason, and you should believe in them. You are a member of VHS, you should act like one.

What you are doing by using proposals is an act of sedition. I didn't even know what sedition was before this or how to deal with it. I looked at the Canadian Criminal Code to figure out how Canada deals with it. If you were to do this to our government you'd be guiltly of a crime and face jailtime. I see that no differently the what you are doing to VHS. You are causing a huge shitstorm by making proposals that you never intended to follow through with so you can get things your way, and it's ruining everyones moral. Stop it. It's undermining our principles for your own personal benefit.

I am really surprised how loving arrogant you are acting all of a sudden. You aren't more important than everyone else. You should be aware of it, because you are almost as arrogant as I am.

Your behaviour is completely unacceptable. You are better than that.

Do whatever you want, but just don't do it around me. I don't speak for VHS, so I've included the directors. I hope they don't make an example of you, but your behvaiour is an example of what not to do.
