suburbs are closer to farms by definition, they are not in urban centers, goods have to move through those suburban areas to reach urban areas and lol at ports being a source of transit for all but a miniscule fraction of goods in a tiny minority of cities sure, there are a few port cities that may distribute containers of chinese electronics more efficiently to the local populace but that doesn't really offset any of the other costs of urban life

that requires all suburbs to lead into farmland when (on the east coast at least) there are many areas where it's just a sprawling mess of suburbs with no farmland in sight. it's not like cities are laid out with nice little rings of suburbs around them and then quaint farms just beyond that

You guys sure do know a lot about pop-radical leftist garbage! The food supply needs some federal policy changes before we can even muck with details. Sugar price floors need to get the gently caress out of my country. Corn subsidies need to get the gently caress out of my country, especially ethanol subsidies. Maybe if we make end consumers see the real costs of conventional agriculture, organic, small-hold farms can get a real economic foothold instead of having to rely on trickles down from the NRDC and rich fucks with the kind of disposable income, education, and access to spend $5 on bunches of curly kale. Maybe when we balance some of the gross inequity, then those dirty capitalists can worry about tightening up the efficiency of local systems, but as things stand, there is no way to compete directly with conventional industrialized agriculture, no matter what, because they have become fat loving pigs that suck from both sides of the federal teat.
