Somewhere in Time has possibly my favorite production values out of any Maiden album. Those double kicks by Nicko are the best ever.

Virtual XI isnt that bad and X Factor isnt that good; I'd say they are both hit and miss. Anyway, Final Frontier is the only album that I didn't like at all.

Phantom of the Opera is what made me want me want to get good at the guitar, I'm glad I decided that ages ago.

No he's not, Iron Maiden are lame as hell. I hate everything about them: the stupid "operatic" vocals; the lovely, outdated, high-pitched guitar tones, the cheesy "epic" lyrics. Ugh they're so lame.

That first album with "Prowler" and "Phantom of the Opera" on really was awesome though :xd:

The new Abyssal is out and it's fully sick: https://abyssal-home.bandcamp.com/

Their last album would've been AOTY 2013, IMO, were it not for the release of new material by Grave Miasma, Ulcerate, and Gorguts.

How does a guitar tone become 'outdated'?

I think it's a clumsy way of referring to it as "dated," which is a pretty common criticism of a lot of music, especially from the 80s.

Same. I don't like Dio or Judas Priest or any of that stuff either for the same reason. King Diamond is pretty sweet though :D

I dunno, I think it's possible to criticize an album for having dated production, or a guitar tone that hearkens back uncomfortably to certain trends (such as the scooped-mids Pantera tone that was all the rage mid-90s). I just don't think those criticisms apply to Maiden.

They begin again

Maiden has great production. You can actually hear the instruments and playing dynamics and they understand managing sonic space. The worst thing about 99% of modern metal is the horrible production.

Nowadays if it's not over-compressed, over-saturated, over-produced drop G tuning it sounds dated apparently.

I know a lot of people hate them, particularly the vocals, but metal vocals are always bad anyway so who cares.

Actually, metal vocals are quite often good. They shouldn't make or break a band for you though.

This is weird to me because Kevin Shirley has been producing Maiden albums since 2000 and I've really enjoyed his work up until The Final Frontier, which sounded kinda weak.

Maybe they need to get an actual producer to weigh in on the songwriting and maybe cut down on the repetition instead of what amounts to just a recording engineer.

Gamma Ray news:

quote:

“Heading For Tomorrow (Anniversary Edition)” will be released on July 24th, 2015 on earMUSIC.

25 years after the official debut, Gamma Ray and earMUSIC have started a monumental work to re-release the entire production by Gamma Ray in deluxe double CDs.
The original albums will be re-presented in new shining, remastered version on the first disc (with the inclusions of all B-sides) while the second CD will be dedicated to old live recordings, demos digitalised for the first time from the original tapes saved by all members of the band, alternative versions and recent studio and live recordings.

That's pretty cool I guess. I just hope the remastering is well done.* Really digging the cover art.

*: I mean it's already been remastered before, so I hope they won't gently caress with it. Not that I'll be getting the album, but it would just be a shame.
