Prokhor Zakharov posted:The logic hoops someone has to run through to come up with something like this are amazing The documentary Merchants of Doubt does a good job of explaining how climate change deniers were able to merge their cause with reactionary right wing American politics. Limbaugh and his ilk simply accuse environmentalists of being 'watermelons'. Green on the outside but commie red on the inside. Therefore in the zero sum mind of the right, any concern for the environment at all = MARX. There's an especially upsetting part focused on Bob Inglis, a republican congressman who was run out of office by the tea party for simply acknowledging that global warming exists. In one scene he's at a talk radio station and the interviewer says with a straight face that the majority of scientific research indicates there is no such thing as climate change, and as good as says that denialism is an inherent value of the right wing. It's a really disturbing documentary.

That's just what living in a city with a high population density is like. If anything our sanitation workers pick that stuff up earlier and earlier and I can't remember the last time I walked past any appreciable amount of trash during the day. And we've got like, only a few blocks that smell like piss. As for the scent of vomit and burning poo poo, I can only imagine that guy mistook Jersey for NYC.

hooman posted:It wasn't intended to be smug. It was more about how difficult it is. A few years ago I actually made a conscious decision to try and reduce the harm I was doing by just existing because I got so down about working in oil and gas, and then the more research that I ended up doing the more depressing the whole thing was until I gave up. Okay fair enough, sorry to come down on you. I generally think that reducing harm is a noble goal when you can't eliminate it entirely, but some people have a stupid hard-line "it's either 100% or nothing" mentality. I mean, both some vegetarians/vegans have that mentality (on the 100% side) and many Evil Carnists think that way too (on the nothing side) and use it as a dumb argument against veg*ism. I've heard it way too many times.

The Supreme Court upheld Obamacare, FOX News is already implying that John Roberts is a Manchurian Candidate under Obama's voodoo influence. Wait, what? I get the reference to the 1936 Olympics, but they're showing the hammer and sickle (or engineer's square?) incorporated into the Nazi flag, why?

Shockingly, the foxnews.com headline seems remarkably non-negative. Calling the decision a "major win for the Obama administration" is the closest thing to hostility as far as I can tell Of course, story #2 is about the IRS targeting thing, but Obamacare got top billing e: ^^^ I guess they're getting a little saltier on TV though???

If John Roberts hadn't jumped at the chance to kill Obamacare the first time, he certainly wasn't going to do it over this weak poo poo this time. That didn't stop the usual suspects from drawing all manner of Obama crashing an ambulance into the SCOTUS building.
