cops terrify me. people go to jail in this country without having hurt people.

Do you mean innocent people or people involved in non-violent, 6-figure-minimum white collar crime? Because the latter going to jail is pretty laughable.

People involved in white-collar crime get bailouts and promotions. There are lots of tactics police can use ("I smelled pot"/"He was driving erratically"/"He resisted arrest") to either arrest or simply inconvenience people they don't like the look of.

What? Ours has 4 stars, and Australia's originally had 6-pointed stars until they made ACT and changed them to 7 points to represent the seven states/territories. decided to include Papua and future territories and made it have 7 points.

Ban the flag entirely, imo, minimum 5 years imprisonment for possession of a lapel flag, up to 25 years for flying a flag on private property.

idgi, will taking the union jack off the flag suddenly stop us being a vassal state of England?

I mean, I think we should change it, but as a side-effect of declaring a republic, not as a political "what TPPA?" sideshow.

I'm pro flag change even though it's an obvious legacy-building exercise for Key, we probably won't get another opportunity for 50 years. I'm also really hoping for something with no fern/southern cross.

That isn't the point. The point is to be seen to be Doing Something when, in reality, nothing is being done at all and the whole thing is just a distraction from bill english shoplifting or something.

Shouldn't the discussion be 'Should we become a republic'? If yes, then we clearly need a new flag, if no, then it's just a re-branding to a new corporate logo, isn't it?

Objectives like raising level of patriotism don't seem particularly positive to me given the influence that kind of thing has over seas..

I agree with this but I don't think republicanism is going to triumph in NZ in the next decade or so.

People seem pretty happy with William and there's no real urgency to become a republic though. I'd expect a few countries to back away once Charles has been in for a few years though.

Agreed.

It just seems like screwed up timing when our second biggest economic centre is still in ruins, which should by all accounts take at least 10 years to get back on it's feet (j/k more like 30 at the current rate).

It will be interesting to see the current flag become an anti-government symbol though.
