No it doesn't, it's making fun of a common experience for many military people where their spouses do the whole 'toughest job in the military' thing where they act like entitled jerks because they're married to someone in the military. It's a joke on people who, while sitting around at home all day, act like they're struggling just as much as their spouse doing the whole 'trying to not get shot' thing. Like, it's not the most graceful joke if you've never encountered people like that, but he's not going "ARG WOMEN" he's making fun of a very specific group of people who, honestly, are real lovely.

Yeah, having grown up in a military family, and lived in areas with a pretty major military presence most of my life, it's more this.

When I was in my single days and looking at all the various sites and such, there were plenty of "F looking for military M" ads. A quick peek at craigslist (there's lots and lots of sailors around here) and you still see quite a few specifically asking for military guys.

It's a tradition as old as military benefits, just like rip-off car/electronics/housing deals and pawn shops.

Captain Bravo posted:

Also, the "dependapotomus" is a two-way street. The people in these specific kinds of military marriages are servicemembers who are trying to game the system, because by getting married they get more money, better living conditions, and a few other benefits. So there's a big element of schadenfreude in there too, "People who try and cheat the system are going to end up with lovely spouses." Plus, when you're marrying someone just for the benefits, even when things get bad you're going to stick with them anyway because divorcing loses you all those goodies.

It all contributes to a very real culture where there's a sizeable number of lovely people gaming the system, and everyone else jokes about it. For people that aren't in or aware of that culture, it can easily be seen as just woman-bashing. And while the dependapotomus is almost always a woman, that's just a byproduct of the fact that the military is overwhelmingly male. Less than 15% of service members are female, not to mention the fact that the author of Terminal Lance was an assaultmen and women are still barred from active combat positions. (Or they were when he was in the corps, I think since last year women can technically train to be assaultmen.)

Either way, it's very much a product of its environment and that context seems to be lost on some of the posters in this thread.

Yeah, really it comes down to the whole culture of the military which those on the outside have no idea about.

Which is why we see stuff like this:

Alacron posted:

I'll freely admit that I'm probably missing some context, but this cartoon in particular

does not make a good first impression.

I mean, as an outside observer it doesn't seem all that different from when Ramirez or McCoy draws a generic "thug" black person. If called on it they'd probably say the same thing, "I know not all black people are like that, I'm just making fun of the bad ones you know?"

I was in the Air Force for 8 years and of all the people I knew in those eight years, I was one of the VERY few that never got married or had kids. The military HEAVILY pushes those enlisted to marry and have children as quickly as possible. It isn't overtly doing this, but those who are single are pretty much treated as secondary to those that are married.

Here are some of the things that contribute to that (coming from my Air Force side of things):

-When you first join, you're in basic training for two months. These two months you see few to no people of the opposite gender and fraternization is completely forbidden. (Not to say it doesn't happen, but when discovered, those people are swiftly punished/kicked out.) Once you get out of basic training, you go to your technical school for training. Depending on your career field, this can be three months to two years long. You're given slightly more freedom, but it's a lot of heavy training and you're living in a dorm-like situation. Fraternization is banned in the living quarters, but this is the first time in a few months people have had contact with those of the opposite gender leading to many people very quickly falling in love. They're called "tech school marriages" and they happen all the loving time. They neverVERY rarely last.

-Once you get out of tech school and to your actual duty location, you're stuck living in the dorms for three years. You're not given any housing or food allowance. You live in the dorms. You eat at the mess hall on base. The mess hall is like a super lovely college cafeteria. No getting out of this. It's mandatory. Suck it. ........ Unless you're married. Once you're married, you can move into a house on base or you can go move off base. Furthermore, they'll PAY you a large sum of money every month to cover your house and food costs. And since you're married, you'll get even MORE than people that are single.

-Having a spouse is a GREAT way to get some spare time off work. I've had so many times when old coworkers would claim a spouse was sick or needed a ride somewhere or had some kind of drama that they need to leave work for. And granted, this depends on the job. I worked in office buildings so we were rarely in critical moments where people couldn't spend a few hours/half a day away.

These things really encouraged people to marry quick. A lot of young soldiers/sailors/marines/airmen get in their head that they'll marry someone, that person will work too and since they'll be dual income, they'll be RAKING in the dough (this can happen). But a lot of them are love/sex starved so they leap into marriage with the first person they see.

I think that the military encourages this and banks on it. Most people enlist for 4 years (some for 6). Four years is just enough time for someone to get restless, jump into a marriage, and have a kid. Don't even get me started on how many single parents there are in the military (spoilers: a lot of people in the military are loving idiots about safe sex). But anyway, the person may have been planning to get out after four, but now they have a spouse and a kid and can't afford to get out and the military will have them for 20. It's really insidious.

Then there are so many people around that prey on these young desperate enlistees. There's a whole loving culture of it.

And there are so many trends you see of people on base. The main two are:

The dependapotamus.
The "Don't you know who I am?! My HUSBAND is an OFFICER and I deserve SPECIAL treatment" (gently caress these people so much)

gently caress, didn't mean for such a long rant but goddamn military culture is such a mindfuck that most people have no idea about.

Again a very likpatous story
I know when I was in the Navy, when it came time for holiday leave the ones who were married were given preference for which leave period they wanted to take, and the single guys often didn't get to go home on Christmas or Thanksgiving since the married ones requested those leave times, because "They have wives and kids to spend time with, you don't have anybody so you can stay here and work."

I remember that article, I think it does have some merit in that there are younger people who are using phrases like "trigger warning" incorrectly, to mean "I don't like this and don't want to hear about it" rather than the actual meaning of the term, but of course Drunky Duck isn't really going to care about that, he just wants to bash liberals.
