You're looking for Lou Zocchi of Gamescience. There were older videos that were a little more ridiculous than this one.

It's a good summary for me as well since I didn't remember the rules fully.

I've played other games in GBoH - mostly Caesar Conquest of Gaul and SPQR, but not Alex, though I do own it. Currently very busy, but will leaf through the rules in July and might be able to teach you then. I nkow the rules, but I wouldn't describe myself as a particularly competent player of the system!

Got my copy of the Empire of the Sun reprint yesterday. I mentioned that I got the new version to a guy in my gaming group, and he went on a rant about how the game was broken because he could always take the Phillipines with no losses. This was way back in the original version of the game though. There any truth to that, or is it even relevant? I've not had a chance to open or play it yet, so I don't have any context to what he was saying.

Yes you can generally take the PI without losses though there's a good chance you'll suffer a hit to an army. It's not a big deal. The Japanese position in that part of the Pacific is really strong and they will generally have it all by the end of T3 at the latest if the hands suck.

I don't see how Japan taking the PI is a flaw-it's what happened.

Tried out The Hunters using Vassal for the first time and enjoyed it very much. Chose a Type VIIB and head out into the British Isles. Ran into the Capital Ship Audacity and her escort. Fired all Forward Torpedoes, 3 hits, 1 dud and managed 2 damage.
Unfortunately I was detected by her escort which prompted landed 3 hits on me, damaging the Deck Gun, Forward Torpedo Door and Radio. Tried repairing the Forward Torpedo door but rendered it inoperable.

At that point I was a little unsure of the ruling, as one section indicated that due to their speed, Capital Ships could not be followed, however another section mentioned that following damaged Capital ships was allowed.

Regardless, I didn't feel I had the fire power to take her down so I slipped away, the remainder of the Patrol was uneventful.

Any one able to comment on whether I could have followed the Capital ship? I don't really see how you can take one down in a single salvo without some serious luck, unless I'm missing something.

Thank you! The two player aids I was following were contradictory but I then found the specific rule. I'm really enjoying this one, was hoping to pickup a physical copy but it seems to be sold out. I'm only just now getting into wargaming and I seem to be stumbling on games a few months too late.

Ok so I have 3 games already on P500 with GMT (Ardennes '44, Cuba Libre and Unconditional Surrender) but when I went to add The Hunters I get a 'quantity exceeds stock on hand' message, so I assumed that the latest P500 run has been done, sent out and closed again.
Do I just keep an eye out in stores?

I'd imagine that it's on it's way to retailers as we speak. It might be worth sending a message to the office ladies to see where it's at though.

It seems unlikely. It's hard to automate something the size of Unconditional Surrender in any meaningful way. On the other hand, you can just play Unconditional Surrender solo because there isn't any hidden information and you can just play both sides.

Also in my game against StashAugustine, I rolled badly in my attack against Clark's, had to do a followup attack and then even attack Manilla directly because you absolutely do not want for the Philippines to have a still-functioning air-force. I lost a bunch of steps out of that.

It's a bit of a high counter monster-ish game, but it has a pretty clever randomized sequence of play that provides some differences between the sides that changes as the war goes on.

Thanks for the replies. In the end I went with Summer Lightning: The Invasion of Poland 1939. It probably won't get much play either, but it's hipster, :poland:, has a pretty box and should be simple and one-sided enough to make for a nice intro wargame.

What's your interest, war-wise?

A lot of the Victory Point Games games are short. Their site it down for maintenance at the moment, but their "20" series is especially short and good for beginners. Jena 20, Waterloo 20, Borodino 20, Austerlitz 20 (all Napoleonic) or Bulge 20 (WW2). Actually, my favorite thing to introduce new players to is Trenches of Valor, which is a small, super quick-playing hex-and-counter WW1 game.
