Has anyone here read Ghost Fleet? This thread seemed like the place to ask. The book has been billed as a sort of modern version of Red Storm Rising but against the Chinese instead of the Russians and with a much more alarmist bent. The author clearly intended for a lot of the plot points in the book to be pointed criticism of various American defense programs. Still, his amazingly evil and competent chinese bad guys had to fall back on some space magic that made our planes and subs not work to beat a near future US that's been further crippled by another global economic crisis, although I don't know if that makes the book more realistic or less. Does the author make any valid points, or is this the same sort of nonsense "speculative fiction " that had 90's writers predicting japanese killbots in America's streets?

I figured out a bit ago you need to divorce in your mind someone's beliefs from their performances. Actors are mostly really dumb people with stupid poo poo belief systems but they can produce some awesome movies. Besides, even funneling money into their wackadoo agenda doesn't affect me. Healthy white male with no kids. I'm invincible! Edit: the exception is someone like Kirk Cameron who lets his crazy belief system actively get in the way of making movies worth watching. His movies aren't even good to watch and make fun of.

My Father went to Iran on behalf of the UK government for a meeting about drug interdiction in the 90's (blame him for Hamas getting US made night vision goggles) and he had grief going to the US ever since, interviews, bag checks etc and that was before 9/11 when you started having mouth breathing retards guard your borders.

Two Finger posted:Having recently watched the Pentagon Wars, I feel obliged to ask if it was real, exaggerated, or just made up? Christ that was a good, if depressing, film. I managed to get a copy of the book and it's really great. It actually covers more than just the Bradley, procurement in the 70's-80's was a real mess. Burton talks about the F-111, especially how the concept and technology was in advance of the engineering of the time. As an interdictor or tactical bomber, the F-111 was great but didn't really come into it's own until the F/G models that were so effective in Desert Storm. Prior to that, the plane was a disaster. There were so many untested technologies (swing wing, flying by radar, escape capsule) that kind of clouded the original design goals. Add to that the fact that it was supposed to be all things to all people (Interceptor, Strategic Bomber, Carrier Operations) and you have the Navy/Air Force making opposing requirements so the A and B models were junk. It really is a predecessor to the F-35 in that you have money just being thrown at a troubled aircraft, no clear role, "Joint" requirements, new technology and a lot of teething problems. The fact that it was never re designated to the A-111 or B-111 is pretty telling of the problems with the process. F-111's only ever carried one or two Sidewinders, almost never carried their (over-engineered) gunpods and I don't see any references to either being used in combat. Still, it turned into an extremely capable aircraft, albeit in a role it was never designed for, after 25 years of development and extraordinary amounts of money. I can write up more about the F-111 or Pentagon Wars if anyone is interested, but I'm phone posting at the moment. Burton also talks about Network-Centric Warfare, Army Doctrine Issues, the HMMVW, M113. He had really great things to say about the F-16 and F-15 and was mentored by the "Fighter Mafia" behind those projects. He thinks that they were ruined by adding radar and ordinance capability, which is an interesting point of view. E: Godholio posted:...it's evidence that this thing might be the most F-111 project since the F-111, and that's not a good thing. But yeah, not conclusive.
