this whole thing is so delicious, I cant get enough of the meltdown. Then the idea that they were going to monetize specific subreddits, subreddits they don't pay people to moderate, just blew up in their faces. also quote:Digg Inc., a social-media pioneer once valued at more than $160 million, is selling for the deeply discounted price of about $500,000, three people familiar with the matter said. as the world turns

If its a large enough forum, your guaranteed to have a bunch of IT experts criticizing everything without realizing the constraints the owner put on what you can do. Especially if you bill by the hour.

Man, that job was a nightmare that sent me over the edge from prodromal to fully psychotic. The owner of that forum used to be on SA. I take this consulting job managing a few techs and sysadmining. Was supposed to be a fairly sweet gig. The biggest client was a mortgage brokerage and it was 2008. That blew up a week after starting. Somehow the sales manager (total sociopath) had gotten the owner of the forums to virtualize everything and pay out the rear end for it. I said it wasn't a good idea, but then the couple that ran the consultancy showed me the financials and it was paying the bulk of my salary. While I'm getting this ready to go, I'm desperately applying for open positions and can't get a single bite. My ex-wife decided she was going to be a catholic school teacher and accept a $25,000 salary with a MAT when the public school system started at $48,000. The recession just keeps getting worse, and virtualizing the DB server for this forum worked out just as badly as I thought. Total disaster, the forum would lock up whenever someone ran a search or made a post. I started digging into the guts of vbulletin and found that when a post was made, it broke it into words, and added it to a one to many table for future searches IIRC. Searching the index table locked it for the duration of the search, so people would post and get a white screen and time out errors while the post routines were waiting to update the search index. IIRC, there wasn't a clean way to make an archive at that point and I was trying to figure out how to do it. I figured out the main problem was my disk throughput was dropping through the floor at peak times. This stupid company that owned the vmware cluster had a true sociopath at the helm. Like he would stiff subcontractors so he could buy new cars, and leave the ex client with a mechanics lean on their property. They claimed it was on a dedicated disk array on their san and a whole lot of other poo poo. So sucking data off the disk through a coffee stirrer combined with vbulletin's search pretty much brought the forums to a halt. This isn't even getting into the little stupid things that used to happen with vmware. The entire time I was searching for other jobs and couldn't get any in my hometown. I kept trying to keep those forums running as best I could because two other people would for sure get laid off. I talked to my ex-wife about moving but her parents were old and frail and she wouldn't do it. I apparently had a small stroke which caused epilepsy. I kept going for as long as I could after that, but the wheels flew off the bus mentally and I wound up on ssdi. Now I do work for friends companies at $100 an hour and limit it to less than 7 hours a month. I'm sorry to the dude that owned the blade forums and their community. I did my best with what I had to work with. I hold radium in high regard for keeping poo poo rolling as long as he did. At some point when you have enough users you need to start getting consults from experts in specific things, and that gets expensive and usually your client doesn't want to pay for it.
