Most important is to have at least 600 gp, otherwise it's probably going to be really painful to collect anything that has significant challenge in it (basically anything requiring 450 collection for scrip turnins).

It's going to be slow to start out with, but this rotation pretty much maximizes collectability and gives you one gathering attempt at the node. I still use it for high level collection (58, 59) scrip turnins.
code:
/ac "Utmost Caution" <me><wait.3>
/ac "Discerning Eye" <me><wait.3>
/ac "Methodical Appraisal" <me><wait.3>
/ac "Utmost Caution" <me><wait.3>
/ac "Discerning Eye" <me><wait.3>
/ac "Methodical Appraisal" <me><wait.3>
/ac "Methodical Appraisal" <me><wait.3>
/ac "Methodical Appraisal" <me><wait.3>
Eventually you'll start getting your leftside filled out and you'll be able to do fancier rotations. Here's what I use for level 56 collections that gives 3 gathering attempts.
code:
/ac "Single Mind" <me><wait.3>
/ac "Discerning Eye" <me><wait.3>
/ac "Methodical Appraisal" <me><wait.3>
/ac "Discerning Eye" <me><wait.3>
/ac "Methodical Appraisal" <me><wait.3>
/ac "Methodical Appraisal" <me><wait.3>
I'm at 550 gathering and 527 perception when doing this. You could probably drop the gathering down significantly if you're in a pinch and it won't hurt you too much (the success rate is like 98% at 550) but the perception is pretty much a hard requirement since the total collectability will be almost exactly 450.

I'm using the full trailblazer's set and partially melded HQ i55s for those stats. I also buy Trapper's Quiche from the Ishgard green grocer (there's probably better options if you need perception but it's cheap).
Best rotation for 450 items I've found is

utmost caution
methodical
utmost caution
methodical
single mind
methodical
single mind
methodical

The order of the buffs don't really matter too much. You can get 3 of anything that requires 450 if your perception is high enough for 113 per hit.

How is ffxiv? When I left the game the end-game consisted mostly of running the Wandering Palace dungeon about 1,000 times for gear to even have a remote hope of ever raiding. I've heard it's much better lately, but as a general rule, Asian MMOs are extremely, bizarrely, awfully grindy. So I wouldn't be shocked if you had to run dungeons, say, 500 times just to get into end-game. But then again, that's kind of how Asian MMOs roll, as a rule.

Currently, the best way to gear up is to collect a unique currency by running daily dungeon roulettes. The gear you get from that can be upgraded by spending another unique currency that you get through daily mob hunts. There are ways to poopsock those currencies, but only crazy people do that. The newest raid is going to be released soon, but getting good gear is really easy and fun if you do your dailies.

So I haven't played this since release, going through the story on my marauder and I just got to the haukke manor part, and going by the spoilers the next dungeon after that is brayflox. Are there any boss gimmicks or speedrun pack skips or any other stuff people generally expect the tank to know/do that I definitely wouldn't know about? If not, when does that kind of stuff start happening? I don't want to gently caress it all up.

You have to pull the last boss out of his own barf, otherwise it heals him. Otherwise no, not really.

Honestly, just ask the party. The community in this game is pretty good, they'll normally explain mechanics to you if you ask.

FF14 pretty much bears no resemblance to Asian MMOs you're thinking of. Nor has it ever really. Even in the bad old days of Wanderers Palace and Amdapor Keep FF14 did not even exist in the same solar system as, say, Lineage 2. I sincerely doubt you've ever actually played one if you're making that comparison.

These days the game works broadly like this. There are a bunch of dungeon roulettes. You've got Low Level Dungeon Roulette which is a random levelling dungeon, high level dungeon roulette is level 50 post game 2.xx cycle dungeons, expert roulette which is whatever the most current dungeons are, and also main scenario roulette and trials roulette. All of these roulettes give bonus tomestones for running them once a day. If you want more than that you can grind expert dungeons.

An entry level set of gear is 3500 Law tomestones and you can get about 400 to 500 a day doing your roulettes. You can do the math. Getting basic functionality does not take long. Plus, the roulettes have the added benefit of keeping the queues populated for newbies. It's a very effective system overall.

As far as I can tell, specialization has no effect on what recipes you can craft. Specialization just makes it easier for three classes of your choice.

There are several things that are bizarrely, awfully grindy but all of them are optional. If all you want to do is see the story, run some dungeons and punch raid bosses you won't run into any of the really terrible grinds. Now, if you get involved with crafting, golden saucer, pvp, or the relic questline on the other hand...

Which is why omnicrafting isn't going anywhere and this whole specialization system is completely ineffective. Unless they tie it in more with red scrip gear and mastery books, it's going to be pretty ignorable I suspect.

Has anyone ever actually said that you can't? That's because the point wasn't to make it so people can't omnicraft, but make it so people don't have to. The specialist skills are to make up for not having cross classes.

It hasn't been like that since 2.0. Doing your least annoying roulettes (2 dungeons and a boss fight) will get you enough endgame currency for an accessory or a small piece, and almost enough for a big piece or a weapon. You can easily cap out a class in a week without grinding just by doing a couple dungeons a day.

This was true of every dungeon for me except for Turn 5 of Binding Coil. For that one the party was basically "Uuuuuhhhh... you might want to just watch the video for this one. It's OK we'll wait". Which they did because FF14's community is awesome.

It's phase heavy but luckily not too mechanics heavy. Just wait until you get to T9, its probably the most mechanically intense fight in the game (outside of savage).

You should also probably look up a guide for all the coil fights as even outgeared and nerfed, they are still technically raid content and are typically not meant as face-roll casual easy.

It's also kind of bad about inventory space management. It's workable if you're like me and focus on only a couple of classes but if you want to do more (particularly crafting/gathering) you'll quickly find yourself up against the space limit. This is particularly frustrating when you consider the fact that you need to keep a lot of old gear for glamour purposes.
